Latest run of major weather models is showing a good upgrade for 1st week of the new year. AIF a little bullish but hopefully we get some reasonable results.

Thank you Zillertal! It has been a blast.
Skied the Zillertal Arena again with family today. Maybe my favourite sector in valley? We have not seen the area at its very best - but still had a lot of fun and some great turns exploring brilliant corner of Alps (that was new to us).
Off to near Innsbruck next week ....

We're off to Mayrhofen first week of February. Does anyone know of a good instructor for one or two private lessons? Its for a couple of experienced skiers who want to work on their carving skills. Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

My favourite is skimayrhofen.com which is Habeler ski school.
Chris Habeler if you clan get him but any instructor would be good based on my experience. Small school compared to others.
They give the option of different times compared to other schools.

Got to the end of a busy christmas/new year period now.
I taught every day from last Saturday to New Years eve in Hochfügen and Hochzillertal and then also did a lesson in the middle of the day yesterday. I also had to do the boring accountancy job on Friday! Add in friends and their 2 kids visiting 1st Jan to today and its been a busy old time!
Yesterday was a decent amount of snowfall, I'd say around 15cm, certainly a bit more than the forecasts were suggesting. It looks like we'll have some more later on in next week and next weekend. Maybe up to around 40cm in total. It's really cold at the moment -12/13/14 so they're making plenty of snow as well.
Slopes have calmed down a bit now, with half of Germany and the Netherlands having gone home. Tuesday this week is a bank Holiday so will be a little busier but we're down to January low season numbers now.

@slider24, even before the snowfall on Friday night/ Saturday morning the snow coverage on piste was good, albeit virtually entirely artificial snow. This meant it started off nicely in the morning and then once the top sugar layer had scraped off you were left with small piles of snow and firm bits in between.
Saturday's snowfall helped the situation, but there's only so much 15cm or so of snow can do, so it's still getting down to the artificial base through out the day. We could really do with a big dumping of snow, but that's not in the forecast currently.
The weather being so cold currently means the cannons are on and making lots of snow.
Virtually all runs are open across the areas i've skied (Zilltertal arena and Hochzillertal/Hochfügen) but I couldn't comment about Mayrhofen as I haven't been there yet this season.

@Froguin, I haven't used it with skis in tow, but I use it sometimes going to work instead of the train. It's usually more of a coach style rather than a low to the ground bus. I wouldn't imagine you'll have any issues with the skis, they must be fairly used to it with all the tourists but I couldn't guarantee that.

We skied most of Penken yesterday, conditions were excellent with pretty much all pistes open. A small bit of snow was falling yesterday afternoon/evening as well.

I've just arrived in Innsbruck on I'm on my way to the Zillertal.
It's a short solo trip so I'll post a few updates as it'll give me something to do.
There's a bus replacement service operating from Innsbruck but one or two trains are running. Not sure how long this lasts for. I couldn't be bothered to faff with buses so waited for a train.
It's cold and white and feels different to my last trip, 2nd week of march last year l, when people were walking around in shorts and flip flops and it was 20 degrees in the valley.
Can't wait to get on the snow tmr.

@swskier, yes it's been coming down!
Do you know is there's any areas in the valley that are better than others if the visibility isn't great tomorrow? Not loads of trees around from what I can remember.
Cheers

@slider24, a lot of the skiing is above the tree line.
Eggalm area of Mayrhofen is a bit more trees, as is the black run on the other side down to the Mösslbahn.
Zillertal arena has some tree lined pistes down towards the middle station too.
Nowhere is particularly amazing in poor visibility though.

@slider24, we were in Zillertal arena today as well.
Skied from Zell over to Königsleiten. Skied the run down in to Gerlos to the bottom of the Isskogelbahn for the first time.
It was particularly quiet over in the Königsleiten area. Fresh snow was around boot deep in places, managed to get in up to my knees in places too!

@swskier, glad you had a great day. I struggled in fresh snow this morning until I got my ski legs back but once the sun came out it was all good.
I skied from Zell as far as gerlos and explored around there.
Lovely in Zell in the late afternoon sunshine on the way back.
Skied from 9 until close with a leisurely lunch so I'm shattered.
I was going to download from mid station as my legs were going but change my mind at the last minute and took on the valley run. Was so glad I did. Steep and hard in places bit negotiated it ok and great to kick off the skis in the valley after a tough but rewarding run
I think I'm going to catch the bus to Gerlos tmr and explore round Königsleiten.

@slider24, the run down to the valley is great, and seriously steep for those last 2 pitches.
If you go to Königsleiten, be sure to also go over to Hochkrimml too, it's lovely over there.

Another great day in Zillertal arena. Got the bus to Gerlos which took about half an hour from Zell station with some lovely views on the switch backs up the mountain.
Started to snow about 10am and was coming down pretty hard as I made my way to Königsleiten.
Was windy at top and the visibility wasn't great. Conditions on piste were good though and it was quiet.
All the red 50s in Königsleiten are great with some nice long runs to the bottom. Maybe it was just the bad visibility but it feels a bit messy right at the top with all the runs blending in to each other at some points.
Took me 45 mins to get down to go over to Hochkrimml as I couldn't find my turn.
Anyway, once I made it over it was worth it. The visibility cleared and enjoyed I Hochkrimml. Just one hill really but there's nice atmosphere and cruisy skiing.
Decided to get the bus back from Gerlos so back over and up to the top of Königsleiten. Weather closed in and near whiteout conditions for the first few hundred meters down run 39 but much better further down and enjoyed blasting down in heavy snow. Great run.
Was 4pm by the time I got off the lift in Gerlos so one last run all the way down for the bus.
Train to Kaltenbach to ski Hochzillertal tmr for the first time. Forcast is for sunnier but warmer weather.
If you're coming out in the next couple weeks, there's plenty of snow and conditions are great.

I don't know if it is classed as Zillertal, but has anyone skied Wildkogel? I have a complimentary day ticket and was wondering if it's worth the drive...

Wildkogel is lovely. It's smallish but has a beautiful bowl and good snow. Just watch out on a windy day, lift can be effected more than say hoch krimmel.
The lifts go from Nuekirchen or Bramberg.
Bramberg has the longest flood lit tobbogan run in Europe. 14km. Free with lift pass before 4pm. Open until 11pm.

Getting excited for our trip to Mayrhofen at the end of the month. Just wondering which areas are linked skiing wise and which need a bus. We're staying between the Penkenbahn and Ahornbahn, short walk to either. Can anyone tell me which areas on the map we can ski to from there and which we'll need to get a bus to? Thanks
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
@rachelb, if you're staying between the two, then those are obviously your main areas. Ahorn is a small area, unless you're a total beginner it's not worth much more of your time than a half day, if at all. Penken is the main ski area for Mayrhofen. From there you can ski as far along as Eggalm.
This map sort of shows you the area.
https://d3u9sm4kpb9d1j.cloudfront.net/pictures/5614076
In the top right hand corner you can see Penken, Rastkogel and Eggalm. This is all connected and is the main Mayrhofen ski area.
If you want to ski Hintertux, Zillertal arena (Zell am Ziller, Gerlos etc) and Hochzillertal (Kaltenbach), you will need to use a combination of buses or trains to all of those areas.
