Why do the precipitation spikes always magically vanish on the charts once they get closer than day 7. Is there a magic forcefield or something?
At least it's not stupidly mild this year for a change.

So what’s the latest weather wise for the weekend team?
Snow-forecast tells me I’m getting 14cm this Saturday at Lech.
I want to believe.

Hi weather fans... I spotted that J2Ski are now offering (new for 2026) a range of different weather models plus ensemble if you pay for a subscription (£35/year) - Here is the info page: https://uk.j2ski.com/subscription.html
I wondered if anyone uses this and/or has any views on how the functionality / cost compares to other options. For context I know very little about weather modelling but enjoy keeping an eye on this thread to get the views of people that do have a clue what all the graphs (might) mean...
EDIT - Just spotted an £8 monthy subscription option.

Some models seem to show a short breakdown from the Atlantic which gets warped into the colder air. That’s the trigger.

I got the Meteobleu Point+ 3M subscription to cover the season. I think it cost about EUR18-20. They have a large number of models in the mapping section.

www.wetter3.de showing zero new snow for the French and Italian Alps next 8 days. Anyone here see the same on their detailed models?
Whilst the Low Countries, Germany, Denmark and Poland will be a winter wonderland.
Then interesting for Austria and Switzerland from Friday 9th.

 You know it makes sense.
|

Snowfall maps on Meteobleu show 8-20 cms across most of Switzerland but it only reaches about 3/4 way south so indeed will leave France and Italy dry. Best hope for fresh snow this weekend. appears to be areas like Bernese Oberland, western Austria.

Interesting week ahead, I’ll be in Verbier. Various forecasts all point to it being very cold especially overnight and sunny. With significant snow from next Thursday.

Seems like the snow for 10/11 January already being dialled down in amount and looking like back to sunshine after that. Still a long way off, but concerning as there is a risk of snow amount really petering down and next 6 week high pressure may be just around corner

Latest runs suggest that from Thursday on (8th of January), there will be substantial snow in the North West Alps (Tignes, 3 Valleys, Les Arcs...). It seems that the biggest snowfall will be right on Saturday, which is a change and traffic heavy day.
Snowapocalypse approaching.
One question, though. Do you still need chains even though you have a car equipped with winter tyres to access Val Thorens for example?

@matejp, Yes. There are times when chains are even mandated for AWD vehicles with 3PMSF tyres. With 2WD and 3PMSF even more so.

For everyone saying the forecasts are ever changing, that’s what happens. The computer models run ever 6? hours then the forecasts update sometime after that. You can get wild swings in 2 forecasts 6 hours apart, especially when looking at over a week away.

Suffering a little from model fatigue after recent drama, but there is no question the last few runs have only improved the situation next week.

Agree, it is frustrating because we have seen a very steady push back of when the snow should arrive over the last week or so, from around 2/3jan now to around the 9th.
The signs are good though.

I see there’s another thread so best not to derail this one….i dont know anyone involved personally but it’s shocking how freakishly close that was for my youngest. I didn’t even know he was in C-M, just that he was off to a party somewhere.
I’ll go thru graphs later, potential for snow on and off all week as trough drops south. By next weekend the only risk is the angle of approach as the Atlantic breaks down the block, becoming flatter, so wetter and milder. Thankfully the cold is already entrenched so maybe we go from -10 back up to zero. The Op runs are on the mild side of the mean so something to keep an eye on, but no dramas yet.

Light dusting of snow in Hertfordshire overnight, should have freshened up the slopes at Mount Hemel Hempstead if anyone is heading there.

Models seem to be converging on 9th/10th for a quite significant system moving in from the Atlantic (likely strong winds). Currently it looks like it will impact the UK and then on to France.
We will have a good idea of where this will impact probably by Mon/Tuesday so some interesting model watching over the weekend.

Bergfex showing reasonable fall (30cm) in Ski Amade mid next week so presumably due to the current northerly flow bringing something down. Bergfex has been promising and disappointing for that area with the current weather pattern for a while now...

Austria and Switzerland will get something over this weekend possibly up to 20cm from the north. then possibly the far SW early next week from a system wrapping around the u der side of the alps.
Then my attention is firmly on next Fri/Sat for something more significant from the NW.
Currently the low is being modelled as very deep (as low as 970mb). This causes it to take a more northerly track as it easily pushes through the embedded HP. However, I am expecting that to slowly sink south over the coming days as the low is modelled less deep and therefore doesn’t as easily push northwards.
Funnily enough I am due to be driving to 1650m in France Friday/Saturday so that may be interesting… but I am not getting ahead of myself just yet.
