Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The Arlberg Snow Report 2025/2026 (Dec 3th - April 19th)

 Poster: A snowHead

Who has suggested the Arlbergstrasse would be closed (very unlikely as it is a "Federal" road )? Stanton's usual cryptic comments only suggest an extension of the current restrictions on Dorfstrasse with a vague plan to eventually have taxi drop off points at the bus terminals and to press for a more regular train service. Hardly a revolution!

Yes, the original comments were vague. When it's says cars will be off limits, it made me think they were going to make it like Zermatt.

If this only affects Dorfstrasse, then it's a positive thing, it will make the town a nicer place to walk in and almost all the hotel car parks will be accessible via other routes just like today.

And the Arlbergstrasse can never be pedestrian!

You can actually drive all the way along Dorfstrasse currently. Those metal bollards drop down if you press the small button on the box at the side of the road. However, it's a bit pointless driving on dorfstrasse unless you need to get to a specific point on it. The road is always full of pedestrians so its far quicker to take the longer way around the outside instead if you are leaving town.

This is all to be realised (wishlist) in phases over a number of years..

@JohnS4, Zermatt & Serfaus have been mentioned , Traffic Free is basically the end game .

Residents & Guest Parking (guest only use cars two times, to arrive & depart) will not be affected ..They know exactly how many Private & Guest Car Parking spaces are available but arriving by Train or Bus with improved final leg access to accommodation is the direction they want to go..

Less CEV'S (vehicles) in the Mountains is always better ...there are to many , fresh air is healthier !!!!

Arlbergstrasse (B197) not impacted it is a Federal Highway.

New Car Parking planned with maybe a Large multi Story Car Park in Arlberg Ost (Nasserein) and over the Rosana by the Central Warming BioMass Plant.. Maybe a new Underground Car Park Directly in Front of the Railway Station.

The 1 hour Train Connections has been pushed for a number of years by the Town but ÖBB have not obliged for some reasons ..

Alterarlbergstrasse will be closed off (traffic permission bolards)

The area by Cafe Sailor will be completely remodelled , Roundabout removed ..(no traffic) to allow free flowing pedestrian flow between Galzigbahn & Rendlebahn

New Footbridge direct from Railway Station into Dorfstrasse /Rendlbahn

A road Tunnel (possibly) from Highway to the Sportscentre (this is curently the most used traffic route)

A service (Wishlist) Tunnel under the old Railway route from Nasserein to Arlberg West.

Logistics hub in Nasserein with forward delivery by EV waggons

Griesplatz ( Murrmel, Spar ) to the Church .. Pedestrianised

Pick & Ups and drops off's to be moved out away from Centre..

New Bus route Turnaround at Gastig

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

BTW

All this information is publicly available

There is far more. info in the sources to do traffic & Lift variants into the Verwall , Nasserien area...

@hsdee, Do you really need a sledge to get to the Post from the old railway station?

@stanton, Much of this will never happen, tunnels under the village? but much is a good idea and fairly easy to do though I hope no multi storey car parks at Nasserein

@munich_irish, Well that picture i think is a jolly round the village, but it did used to be horse drawn sledges from langen station to zurs way back when, it's shown on some of the old film footage.

The reason for the location of the original station was to be next to the Hotel Post, which just happened to be owned by the mayor at this time who arranged it to be just so.

@TYPUCT, There is currently no free parking, nor hardly any overnight public parking in the centre of the village. Much easier to use the train. The Arlberg does have the most expensive lift passes in Austria (will be €80 plus for a day ticket next season) but it does offer discounts unlike most other areas. I can get a pass cheaper in the Arlberg than any of the other large Austrian areas. If you want to pay silly money for sparkling wine its not difficult to find places to indulge your habit but no problem to get reasonably priced beer (cheaper than London!) on Dorfstrasse. Accommodation costs are becoming a bit difficult though.

@hsdee, I just finished reading "Crossed Skis, An Alpine Mystery" written by Carol Carnac in 1952. It takes place mostly in Lech but also in Zurs and St. Anton. It was reprinted in 2020 as part of the British Library Crime Classics. Not only is it an engaging mystery but it is quite the window to the early 1950s and skiing in the Arlberg (yes, there are horse-drawn sledges). Very Happy

My one St Anton literary quiz question, published a few years later, 1963, was Ian Fleming writing that James Bond himself learned to ski at the Hannes Schneider Ski School in St Anton.

@badatbetting, KK getting a rebuild, and i believe aiming for a more upmarket crowd. Sennhutte also getting a rebuild.

Interesting! I thought the KK vibe never quite worked, and with mooserwirt doing the job for wild times then KK basically had no point. Hopefully no changes to taps though! That would be a crime.

It will be interesting to see what direction the KK updates take. The owner of the KK is also the owner of Arlone which was packed this year, but it's hard to see that there is space for two places that cater to the same crowd. The moose has the europop apres well covered, so hopefully KK will come up with something different to those places.

KK Redevelopment has been in the planning consent phase at least 2 years prior to last season. Dont forget the hill is moving so it needed to be done...

The Heustadl came up for sale during this period so that took priority for smooth transition for last season
eercels of land from the neighbours adjacent to the KK... The new KK plans are quite extensive !!

The Sennhütte always used to be the first stop down the hilll... They went on really late 01:00am and back in the 80's the British "Radio 1" station used to do live shows from there (couple of seasons) ...Radio Broadcast trucks were bought over to Austria... They had some famous British DJ's and Singers I forgot the DJ name (but i had no idea about Pommy DJ's ) .Kim Wilde was there and some others (I forgot)..She is still a regular visitor ..

Demoition started couple days after the and of last season..

Plenty more levelling going on in town to cater for the new money from cash rich Polish Czechs, Hungarians.. They also Tip very well..

Pom's are still worrying about the price of a Bier and buying Coffee at the Railway Station to save €1.00 Very Happy Very Happy

@DPL, Book recommendation was fun danke, some words i would have to look up - popular words when it was written that are n’t so well known now, at least by me. Love that they call alpine skiing ski running, as per the very early ski books. Enjoyed the description of the journey to resort by train and the Bus from Langen via Flexenpass to Lech. Not so much about the village or facilities though it seemed to have been just as expensive for food and drink back then. In one part it talks about skiing to Zurs from Lech using a lift but book 1952 and Rufikopf only installed 1957.

@JimboS, I am sure the snow was good in April, no issue that the skiing is good. Around the end of April / beginning of May there were a number of reports in the German media with images from Ischgl of large t shirted crowds many waving "glasses" of beer / aperol in front of a big stage with DJs, & bands. No sign of any skiing. There is a feeling both in the Tirol and in the wider German speaking area that the "skiing industry" typified by Ischgl has rather moved too far down the route of a giant money making machine with little consideration for the wider community. Sadly skiing is becoming the preserve of the well off, most folk (even in Tirol) cant afford to take part. A revamped KK is possibly another step down that route less drunken ski bums more Folie Douce.

Does anyone know if you can get a direct train from Salzburg to Langen am Arlberg in January? Booked up for Oberlech but flight times to Innsbruck from Scotland get in early evening but flights to Salzburg get in early morning. Don't fancy arriving too late for dinner on our first night Laughing
The alternative is to fly early doors from Newcastle instead of Edinburgh/Glasgow but that would mean a mega early start

KK caters for the Younger crowds predominantly Scandinavian .. and was the place in Austria to do APRES SKI as we Know it Today !!

When Mario took it over he made a few changes the old staff rooms were converted to the Stube room... I can only base my opinion on last season as I have never been to st Anton prior to that. I did do comfortably over 100 apres sessions so I am pretty well versed on how things were last season. (I plan to drink less next year so I can actually remember things)

I wouldn't say KK catered to a younger crowd than taps, it was just much quieter, very rarely at capacity besides Australia Day, closing etc (opening day was actually shockingly dead). I imagine it was incredible back in the day due to the history of apres ski, but it seems to be the jack of all trades last season, but despite that I still don't want it to have VIP vibes - Arl one was about the limit that we could handle for how posh the place was. We met Mario Matt, my flatmate got to do some photo's of events throughout the season, his English only seemed slightly better than our German though, seemed a v nice guy though.

I am intrigued by the spar developments, I WISH it had some self service check outs! The one in Lech seems to run SO much smoother purely due to this, the one in St Anton always has a massive queue and seems so slow.

I highly doubt more 'poms' are coming to Austria over France now than there used to be pre Brexit. The tourist visa for France is extremely easy to get, whereas the Austrian one is borderline non-existent so it's safe to say the Brits have mainly been in France since 2020.

I still have not skied off piste at all, and am a fairly poo-poo skier (I learnt to ski in my 30s). I still love the St Anton ski area and general way of life, and hence I am hoping to do another season here over Meribel. I hope this is evidence that there clearly is more reasons for showing up than the off piste.

@boabski, Yes there are direct trains from Salzburg to Langen. Railjets run on the route between Vienna & Feldkirch basically one per hour (the odd one involves an easy change at Innsbruck). Every two hours the train goes on to Bregenz the other hour to Zürich. The Bregenz trains stop at Pitztal & Langen, the Zürich trains at Ötztal & St Anton (hence discussion above). So direct train Salzburg to Langen every two hours. However it is just as easy to get from St Anton to Lech as it is from Langen, buses connect with the trains or if you are flush book a transfer.

@stanton, Not sure when you were last in the Moose but clientele seems to be largely Dutch & Scandies, a few random Brits, German speakers less in evidence even if the music is very typical Bavarian bierfest toons. The punch up last season was (allegedly) mostly Dutch with a sprinkling of South Americans!

@turms2, I have a subscription to the Süddeutsche, there have been a number of articles along the same lines, this one featured the end of season partying in Ischgl (which understandably seems a particular target) but there have been a number of other often featuring folk from the Tirol who oppose further expansion of skiing or are not in favour of the way "apres ski" has developed. When I first moved o Bavaria 25 years ago, many, if not most people went skiing. Now I am pretty much the only person I know who goes, the group at the Stammtisch have all given up as "too expensive" (these are mainly folk doing corporate management type jobs), there is a village ski club but much smaller than it used to be.

@turms2, Gunther Aloys - Seen him in a few you documentries, he's the guy who started the ischgl opening and closing parties and took Ischgl in the direction of being a party town, they were a bit of a latecomer to skiing not being one of the founding villages like Kitz or Anton. He features in another interesting documentary on there, Rummelplatz Alpen (German) which contrasts Ischgl with quiet unintrusive mountain tourism.

It's been rumoured for years that Spar would disappear and turn into Mooserwirt part 2 or something similar, which would be a complete shame @badatbetting, - Don't go to Spar after skiing

@hsdee, Having three supermarkets in a village, even if it is on the larger size, seems a lot. The Spar is always busy in the ski season but must be very quiet outside of that, would assume locals would use Billa, M Preis or go to Landeck. Maybe a bigger stage for Gunar?
