Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Thanks, I have booked the Pension Schattbergstube for next season, the price inc lift pass was tempting enough to offset the fact it may be a little basic and the suggestions on here enough to convince me I will be able to book restaurants to seat a group. I have been to the bar and restaurant downstairs so know they are OK and the location is decent for skiing. I may have to visit in December to check things out......Last question before leaving anything else to the 25/26 thread, did you say there was a ski room just inside the entrance to the Pension @Gored ?

From the Independent Newspaper , a bonus for anyone visiting Salzburgland, Saalbach, Zell am See, Maria Alm, Leogang, Kaprun, Lofer and more.

Austrian travel bonus
The hills are alive with the sound of free public transport in SalzburgerLand, the area spreading south from the city where Mozart was born. The new, free “Guest Mobility Ticket” is given to every guest staying in the city of Salzburg or surroundings. The pass covers all city transport (including to and from the airport), all trains and regional buses. It is valid from the day you check in until the day of departure. “You will receive your ticket digitally in your wallet or as a PDF directly upon check-in or pre-check-in at your accommodation,” say the authorities.

Hi All,

Put together a youtube video from April this year when it dumped a lot. It was really foggy out that day and I'm a total beginner in pow, but here is this video if anyone wants to see. I only stayed in the Leogang area. Also have some other videos of my channel of Obertauern, Zauchensee, Schladming, SkiWelt, and HochOetz with more to come of the Zugspitze and Dolomites Smile

Hi all, does Kaprun and the surrounds get very busy over half term?

Thinking of a trip next February.

@Rusty76, there is a GB Facebook page dedicated to Zell am See, you might get better answers there or start a new thread as not many of us go over to Kaprun, even outside half term it gets busy , especially at the lifts it’s quite a small ski area compared to the Ski circus.

We went to Kaprun last half term for a day (from Saalbach) we treated more like an experience for the kids to try another area, the new cable cars from Maiskogel area and to go higher than they have ever been.
It was so much busier than Saalbach and to be honest seemed a complete waste of time and effort in the queues and long lift times with no down hill skiing for quite a few of the lifts. The best bit was when we got back to Maiskogel from the new link cable car and skied down there. We all wished we stayed there for the day instead of on the glacier with all the hords of people.

@Rusty76, All ski resorts get much busier throughout February. Kaprun is no exception. How busy the Kitzsteinhorn ski area gets is very much dependent on weather conditions and on how good the conditions are in neighbouring areas. The better that conditions are elsewhere, the quieter the glacier becomes. The glacier can be horrible to ski in bad weather, due to its height and exposure. On the flip side, it absolutely comes into its own when lower neighbouring ski areas are shrouded in cloud and mist. All of the pistes on the Kitzsteinhorn lie between 2,000m and 3,000m.
As has already been said, the glacier ski area is not enormous, but there are a decent number of runs and the snow is usually fantastic. No matter how busy the glacier is, the Maiskogel rarely gets busy and is a very underrated, albeit small, mountain. Kaprun also gives access to Zell and the Ski Circus, but the latter is a bit of a hike without a car.
I have lived in the region and my ideal base for a trip to that area would be Zell am See, all day long.

Salzburgerland enjoyers...

Planning a summer trip with the kids (7 and 9) to Saalbach/Zell for a couple of weeks in an apartment. Possibly Kitzbuhel for a day or two in a hotel. Would plan to stay in Saalbach (or Hinterglemm) the whole time.

Some questions:

- I've read some stuff about biking only being permitted on specific paths. Is that protecting hiking paths (which would be well beyond my kids biking abilities)? So fire roads and "undesignated" gravel paths are ok?
- If we were to bike to Zell Am See from Saalbach, how steep is the valley road? If we had e bikes could we tow the kids back up (or rent the kids e bikes for that day).
- Should we stay in Hinterglemm or Saalbach?
- Any particular mountain restaurants to hike/bike to that are worth the extra effort or a special plan?
- I have a small ambition to bike down to Kaprun. This is mainly because it is where my mother broke her leg in the 90s on what was to be our last family ski trip, so I have some weird misplaced nostalgia. Can we bring bikes on the bus or would we need to taxi back?

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
Saalbach-Hinterglemm is very popular with mountain bikers. In order to avoid clashes and crashes between walkers and bikers hurtling down the mountain, a number of paths on the mountain have been designated either for hikers or bikers only. These are clearly marked. All of the gravel paths, access roads and fire roads are open to everyone.

The valley road up from Zell am See to Saalbach is a long, steady, but not particularly steep climb. The issue is that it is constantly uphill - there is nowhere where you get a minute or two to coast downhill and catch your breath. Most of the route is on a separate cycle/pedestrian path, so is safe for the kids. On an e-bike it would be a doddle. The run downhill back to Zell takes less than half the time that it takes to do the uphill run. If you need to rent bikes, the best shop is actually Big Time in Maishofen, which has a good selection of bikes and e-bikes at reasonable prices. The shops in Saalbach and Hinterglemm seem only to have high-end mountain bikes for rent and want €90 a day for them

Stay in either village.

Mountain restaurants - At the very end of the valley there are two old-fashioned restaurants that are worth the effort, the Saalalm and the Ossmannalm. Good food (Ossmannalm is best) and amazing views. Reiteralm on the Reiterkogel side of Hinterglemm is also good (walk over from the Reiterkogel lift) and the Winkler Alm at the Zwolferkogel mid-station is also worth a visit, as is the Panorama Alm on Kohlmais (Saalbach).

Zell am See to Kaprun is an easy 20 minute bike ride, but you can't take bikes on the bus and I don't think taxis take bikes either.

@afterski, in addition to Quinton’s suggestions, don’t miss the following mountain restaurants in summer (you can drive up to all three - no need to take a gondola):
- the Spielberghaus (weekly barbecue)
- the Hecherhütte (excellent food, swimming pool, and weekly barbecue party)
- the Sonnhof (good food, natural swimming pool, reservoir nearby, archery course)
I have compiled a guide to Saalbach in summer. PM me your email address if you would like me to send it.
Also let me know if you’re looking for a well-located apartment.

@afterski, The tourist office have an online map for biking, https://www.saalbach.com/en/summer/mountain-biking, there are various levels of trails, you can download them on to an app such as Outdooractive
I would also recommend Big Time, we’ve rented just for the day or multiple days from them, you can take the 680 bus down or park in the public car park just down the road.

A nice ride is to go to https://misssi.at/en/ in Saalfelden amazing ice cream, highly recommend the apple strudel, it’s fairly flat ride along small quite country roads in the valley, you could include ice cream and the lake, https://www.saalfelden.at/Naturbadeanlage_Ritzensee_1 . You can also go to the lake at Zell the one to go for is Thumersbach, both have food and you can rent an umbrella.

As Quinton has said the ride back up the valley is a long steady climb, there is a cycle path all the way from Maishofen to beyond Hinterglemm, it’s shared with walkers but is wide.

Check opening days of the mountain restaurants they have rest days, when we went past the Saalalm last summer it had closed or hadn’t opened for the season.
