Hi all, Heading out on Friday and thinking of an evening in the thermal baths at StG, can anyone advise if it's possible to get there and back without a car (from StG) and if it's budgie smugglers only? Also how are conditions holding up?

easy to get there with new Thermal lift (not the gondola) departs from the Saint Gervais Spa hotel & yes it is the tight French shorts required.
Heading out myself on Friday so hoping it is holding up well, forecast is sunny.

Yes, to get to the lift (free) head from the roundabout by the bridge in the direction of Le Fayet, the lift is about 200m on the left. You need to book your slot for the thermal baths which I imagine you can do online otherwise with the Tourist Information Office.

@ajc2260626, as suggested above, one way would be to arrange to meet your mate in Praz sur Arly. But if your mate in Saisies had a car, the easiest way would probably be for him to drive to Belleville, at the head of the Hauteluce Valley, and join up with you in Les Contamines (ie park in Belleville and get the lift up). 20 minute drive for him. whereas by road from Contamines to Saisies would be more like an hour.

Can anyone report what the snow is like in Les Contamines right now? Worth a day trip up from StG on the bus as no car?

does anyone know why they rarely open the Véleray drag?[/quoteI always assumed it was for avalanche risk but can't still be a problem, perhaps they just don't want to have the cost of the electric and labour , the jouty lift in combloux is the same it's only open weekends and holidays these days, which is a shame as there are a couple of lovely runs down either side of it

@robs1, I agree, the red run the far side of the Jouty chair in particular is one we always enjoy but so often closed. No idea why though.
@jedster may know about Veleray. It (plus the rope drag access, and Grevettaz which pretty much needs opening up as well) allows access to a large area of off-piste - and between-piste - and maybe there are challenges in securing that large area against avalanches.

Another vote for Jouty, it’s a great run with lots of undulations

Just a quick note that while the kids had their final ski class of the season yesterday and despite the lack of fresh snow that in general Saint Gervais skied surprisingly well. Nobody at all on the mountain which was also nice!

@devilabit, yes, I have been looking at the webcam images with horror. More walkers than skiers.
But we were out last week, and were pleasantly surprised how decent things were up to about 2 o'clock. Even skiing Finance down to Bettex was OK. (And even in Contamines, despite more snow that 2 o'clock transition made skiing suddenly heavy and unpleasant).

There is a report on the replacement of the Beauregard chair in Combloux here.

Not a bad lift now , perhaps adding more seats per chair to increase capacity

@rjs, interesting. I don't recall that lift being particularly outdated, I wonder if they are wanting to cater for the summer market and mountain biking.
Plus a gondola can be used to download, and the low altitude (1200m at the bottom) is presumably what causes the Combloux sector to close for skiing a week or two earlier than the rest of EMB.

I did seem to notice that there was a greater amount of disability skiing in that area ( some quite amazing) , perhaps it is to give greater access to them.
