 Poster: A snowHead
|
I have the opportunity/need to get away for a couple of weekends between now and July. I've not managed to do a ski trip for about 3 years now but would love a trip to the Swiss/French Alps for a couple of days of walking/just being in the mountains.
Could anyone provide any advice on which resorts have lifts operating and when? I know some resorts effectively close down at the end of the Winter season.
Also, I know weather is variable, but is there a time during the Summer when it tends to be be better?

The weather is like a lottery…
We’ve been spending our summer holidays in the Alps since 2014 — sometimes the weather was perfect: sunny, warm, and dry. Other times it was really cold.
We always go between mid-August and the first week of September.
Some summers we could spend all day outside and even go swimming in outdoor pools, while the next year we’d need to wear light jackets almost the entire time.
In July, almost all resorts have at least some lifts open. Most resorts close in May and then reopen for the summer season in June.
We’ll be in Schladming, Austria for six days in mid-June, and all lifts that operate in summer will be running — the same goes for Saalbach.
Other resorts usually open later in June. I suppose it’s probably similar in France or Switzerland.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

The Verbier VIP Pass starts from 1st June - when you pay your tourist tax you also get a free pedestrian pass for the lifts. Being able to get up the mountain quickly significantly extends the choice of walks, plus it means you invest your stamina in walking around the mountains, rather than simply ascending them.
You’ll need to check the lift opening times on the Verbier website to see when the Verbier Médran↔Ruinettes lift opens.

Most of the lifts in Saalbach-Hinterglemm open on 29th May. Some lifts in Zell am See open on 15th May.
Both resorts offer a summer card that gives free use of the cable cars to guests staying in registered accommodation - hotels, B&Bs or apartments. In addition, all public transport throughout Salzburgerland is free for tourists this summer. The accommodation provider can email the Mobility Ticket link to guests before they check in - for example, guests can use the train or bus free of charge to travel from Salzburg Airport to their accommodation in Zell am See or Saalbach.

@Ryunis, what are you looking to do exactly? Switzerland is a land of cableways and railways and many are open now. There are also many mountain hikes you can do that don‘t need cable cars. Especially following a less-than-epic snow season like we’ve just had. Hiking/biking season is in fairly full swing here, basically. Weather-wise it‘s a lottery but there tend to be more thunderstorms in July/August.
