Does anyone go skiing October half term? Any feedback on how it is?

@Rusty76, you'll be bound to glaciers. Most popular round then tends to be Hintertux, which could be great, could be terrible, either way you can guarantee it'll be rammed with race clubs.

And the glaciers aren't what they were. Even when they were a bit closer to what they were, in my younger days, I reckoned it's only worth it for focussed instruction (in the past I had good quality instruction in both Deux Alpes and Tignes). Not just hooning around. And fighting all those manically competitive race kids for space on the T bars isn't that much fun.

And sometimes both in one week. One autumn trip to Tignes, with just four days skiing, the entire uplift was closed for two of those days, because of high winds.

Worth keeping an eye on conditions @Rusty76 and possibly booking last minute. After a good early snowfall, we went to Hintertux at the drop of a hat 2 or 3 years ago, on something like the 8th of October, and had great conditions Very quiet slopes too, with minimal racers there.

Done Hintertux once at October half term. Jnr was there training so we went along to ski recreationally. The conditions were interesting to say the least (of course you could get excellent conditions, iffy conditions or anywhere in between). Unless you have a decent reason to go at October half term, I’d probably not bother to just go for a skiing holiday. A holiday to Austria with some skiing added for a day or two, fine. Be prepared for an early start with big queues for the first lift and finishing early afternoon.

i have done it many times, since i live in Germany (and sometimes from Greece) and from lets say 10 times, there was not once that we didnt manage to ski properly. As said, its like a roulette...sometimes we had snow till the low lifts (Stubai) , sometimes iced hard packed slopes for a few days, and then suddenly over 80cm snow in 48 Hours, sometimes only sunshine etc
The biggest problem (for me) are the race teams, but i think if you avoid Hinertux and Pitztal its ok...
But if you are there in Weekends and there is an event (Stubai Zoo, Test event etc) then its really crowded....
The best option is Kaunertal...if you manage to go everyday the 18 U-turns with the car/bus up and down...

I reckon the best thing to do in the Alps in October is enjoy the autumn colours and walk in the forest.

Agreed these days, have gone to L2A in the past, but I don't think it even opens any more. It's a great time to walk if the weather is good as days are still pleasant, although it does get dark early, and nights can be chilly.

That is very true, and we have done when L2A used to open for the Toussaints holidays but that is now a rarity. Never had to fight with the race clubs though.

I believe the Levi ski resort in Finland is open from around early October. I haven't been but I've had my eyes on it as a possible future pre(Alps)season outing.

That's definitely a wait and see how conditions are looking option. Along with a number of Scandi options where you'll see a number of FIS races and race teams in October/November time. This past season wasn't a great start over there from what I saw.

You're correct. They start what they term 'snow preservation' in April basically scrapping it off to pile up and cover through the summer. If the flights were better from Northern airports I'd really consider it for April/May too as unlike the Alps it's still cold during the day to the degree the slopes don't get chopped up/slushy.
It may be limited in October and it's only ~50km all in but I guess glaciers only areas are too. It's quite different to skiing in the Alps but worth a look.
