At the same time, Balfour Beatty, working on behalf of estate owner Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), will return to complete their programme of remediation works on the railway viaduct. |
I hope it wasn’t being operated in an unsafe condition.

So yet another Bank holiday weekend up the spout, along with all it's potential revenue.
Why would any tourist bother to drive down from Aviemore at any time during the summer when chances are very high it will be closed?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Do you know how far away it is?

Saw that on facebook earlier and they were getting pelters, incredible really. |
Trying to pass this off as annual maintenance, when they made a big song and dance in November about how they had brought the annual maintenance forward to avoid disruption to operations, is hardly going to get a positive response.
If it was 3 weeks of pre-planned work, surely you would try to get the work done between the bank holidays?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@GlasgowCyclops, It's been a long time since I was there, but it used to be about 25 miles round trip.
I used to stay B&B in Aviemore when I regularly skied Cairngorm many years ago.
My point really wasn't just about Aviemore, more a question of why tourist would bother to make the trip from anywhere if the chances were the railway would be closed.
The vast majority of it's potential customers wouldn't be equipped to hike up the mountain, and there are thousands of better viewpoints than that car park.

Even when operating: why would any tourist go up the funicular in summer?
The VMP (which i agree with : the plateau is sub arctic tundra) means summer visitors not allowed to exit the top station.
Therefore, repeat summer custom or recreational / hiking / biking use of the funicular is effectively prohibited.
I don't think I have ever been up the funicular in summer in 25 years.
Wrong lift in the wrong place.

Technically you also can’t ski tour using the railway either , you can using surface lifts but not railway.

It's slightly more nuanced than that - skiers and snowboarders are not required to remain within the Ski Patrol Area, however the funicular should not be used to directly access the designated European protected sites covering the Plateau area and the Northern Corries to the west of the Fiacaill a'Choire Chais.

As fairly regular visitors to Aviemore, my wife and I regularly used the funicular during summer , autumn and winter , the top cafe is an excellent viewpoint for those with less fitness and/or mobility. We've often gone up separately, -me with the dog and her on the train, spent some time at the cafe then come down by train . Dogs are not permitted on the train going up ....but are allowed to descend.

Is that some sort of local logic?

It's to prevent ill-advised people taking their dog up onto the plateau for a walk , with the potential problems that could cause.
