Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Zermatt and Cervinia 2024-25

 Poster: A snowHead

Zermatt closes the lifts on the Rothorn and Gornegrat mountains after Monday. However the Schwarzee and Klein Matterhorn mountains stay open. Cervinia is open for another two weeks. Skiing should be superb. Even after that the spring skiing area still has a decent few km open. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cervinia lift company kept a larger than usual area open - they are often more flexible.

Just to give you an idea of how much snow has to be moved after that storm, here is a screenshot of the terrace of the Trockener Steg cafeteria. Before the storm there was no snow there at all. This morning the snow was above the railings!

The road and railway are up and running again. The electricity came back on late last night. So we had no electricity in the apartment for about 43 hours. They reckon 48 hours is the maximum you can still use stuff from a freezer safely. We are going to risk it. If I don’t post here again you know we made the wrong decision.

Cervinia looks lovely on webcams. Anyone still out there? I assume slushy from 2500 again. I booked last week instead of this week as it seemed Italian schools were off this week but not last. Was wondering if second week busier as such.

I see I'm not the only one comparing my work view (300+ unread new emails) to the Cervinia webcam which looks lovely.

Almost certainly to be slushy midday but it does look glorious.

Avalanche yesterday on the Furgghorn. You can see the Furggsattel glacier chairlift on the left hand side of the picture. Lots of people head up the Furgghorn from top of Furggsattel lift. Even more people come down the piste, duck under the rope and come round the lower part of Furgghorn to access same area.

The helicopters and rescue teams were sent out but miraculously no-one seems to have been caught in it (or tragically there could be people without beacons).

The snow is back! Low snow line for this time of year of about 2000m. Could be about 10 cm over these three days. Nice.

Seemed to be open down to Plan Maison this weekend, giving the area the most open in Europe, for the weekend at least

It is a bit more complicated than that.

At present on the Italian side you can ski the top section of the Plan Maison area. However, the chairlifts up from Plan Maison to the bottom of that section are not open (the very top one is of course). To access the area you have to go up to Testa Grigia, ski down the Swiss side (don’t need a Swiss pass to do that) and then ski through the Theodulpass. When you are finished skiing you can then ski down to Plan Maison.

The top of the Ventina from Testa Grigia down to Cime Bianche Laghi is also open. On the Swiss side the glacier area down to Trockener Steg is open but the Furggsattel lift closed as of today.

The only extra thing open last weekend (and next weekend) is the nursery slope (served by a button lift) at Plan Maison.

snowHead It is when you write it down. Pretty easy when you are there.

I love the Italian lift company. If they can keep runs open they will. The Swiss lift company just do everything to schedule.

Slightly annoying thing is that my Zermatt annual pass does not cover the Italian lifts outside the winter season. You can get an extended pass but it is CHF400! I just don’t go over often enough in the summer to justify that. Looks like it is day passes for me while they still have the Italian runs open.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Just arrived. Will report after a few days. Looking like still good snowshoe walking from Riffelberg up so that will be a treat for mid May. Probably fit in one day’s skiing some time next week.

Went snowshoe walking today from Riffelberg (2600m) upwards. The snow was fantastic. The end April mega-dump has created a really good deep layer of consistent snow. Because it came so late it has hardly been accessed. There is no crust so the snowshoes are sinking into the snow just the right amount without ever collapsing through. Just a short way from Riffelberg there was untouched snow as far as the eye could see.

There were even a few skiers skiing down from Gornergrat to Riffelberg. Had to be careful to stay off slopes facing south but it was definitely doable. On the train on the way back there were a couple of German lads who had done the two hour hike over to the Monte Rosa Hut and then skinned up and skied down over there several times. Chapeau to them.

In less good news the big dump did bring down quite a few trees (including round – but thankfully not in(!) – our apartment). The lift company are having to work really hard to get all the hiking trails prepared for the beginning of the official hiking season in June.

I am sure you are all worried about the news above about my annual pass not allowing me over to the Italian side outside the winter season. Apparently the new CHF400 charge to access their lifts in summer does not apply to lifts serving pistes while they are still open. So I am good for getting a day skiing over there this week (weather permitting – it is glorious at present but precipitation due from Tuesday)

Last day of skiing on the Italian side will be Monday 2 June. Pretty good going to get into June. Skiing of course continues up on the Swiss glacier.

From the webcams it still looks they could have everything above plan maison open if there was staff / a market, very snowy up there.
