@JimboS, we had a couple of hours in the morning that were great, then cloudy most of the rest of the day. A great day though, and Mrs Swskier had a big breakthrough in her skiing today.

@swskier, both of your skiing must have improved a lot this year.

@JimboS, yeah, we've both improved. I'd say because I'm at a higher level, improvements are a lot smaller, whereas she's still making quite incremental leaps.
We skied Zillertal Arena this morning, and piste coverage is still really good. No skiing down to the middle station, but everything above that is in great condition with just 2 days remaining of the season.

So all resorts down in the Zillertal closed on Monday. We had a short ski in Kaltenbach, but the weather was very grey and to be honest it wasn't huge fun.
This morning we were up at Hintertux where there's been probably 20cm of fresh snow. It felt really busy up there, Insider ski shop have a race ski test on with the opportunity to meet Stephanie Brunner, plus the Better Park opened up again for the spring, so there was actually some queues at lifts. Nothing major, just a minute or 2 here or there.

I'm praying for lots more snow, 7 weeks and counting. In the past I've had powder in June as well as dirty blue ice ice from middle down to the Tuxerfernhaus.

@JimboS, we'll be well finished with skiing by then. Pass ends May 15th, and we'll not pay again until 1st October rolls around i'd imagine!

Piste conditions were fantastic up in Hintertux today. We didn't even get on the valley lift until just after 10 and things were still great up there.

Sounds great @swskier. We've just booked a trip there for 2 or 3 days skiing from 17th May. Can't wait! Ryanair flights from MAN > Memmingen £32 pp return; Ryanair car hire £19. Mustn't grumble!

Is it not worth paying for a pass to do some race training?

They seem to be (just about) skiing down to the mid station but doubt that will last much longer. Looks like snow up high this week.

It's been a lot cooler this week, low to mid teens down here at 650m, and a fair amount of rain, so i'd expect there's been a decent amount of snow up there. Forecast looks good for this weekend for what will be our final ski of the season.

Hintertux this morning, we didn't start skiing until gone 10, so piste conditions were already chopped up and had started getting heavy. A decent amount of people up there, more than I imagined there would be, but nowhere near busy! No need to queue for any lifts.

I was up there yesterday morning, my friend works away and was desperate for a final ski of the season |
AND @Chris_n?? How was it?
I'll be at Hintertux from Sunday pm with Mrs MA. We may ski then (depending on the weather), or wait until Monday for a full day.

The snow was mainly decent but quite bumpy on anything steep. First thing the runs to Tuxer Fernerhaus were a little 'firm' but by the time we came down again had already softened quite a bit. Snow cover was good but since then they have closed the Kaserer 2 T Bar and turned the Fernerhaus webcam off which suggests the cover has reduced somewhat. This week there will have been fewer people as the Tirol card is finished for the winter season so maybe the pistes are less bumpy now. It was certainly good skiing for the middle of May. Looking on webcam this morning was -7 on top and snowing to Sommerberg so should be fine tomorrow (weather permitting).

Looks pretty quite up there today but snow looks good.

Fantastic conditions at Hintertux today - fresh snow and wall to wall sun Quiet on the pistes too.
Rather disappointing on the lifts front though:
- Gletscherbus 2 off. Had to use the old, slow gondola from Sommerberg.
- Gletscherbus 3 off. Had to use the ancient two seater chair to reach the summit. We thought we were back in 1990!
- Kaserer draglifts off.
- Schlegeis chair off.
Given the excellent snow conditions, and what terrain could be open, it wasn't the best experience (lift and terrain wise) for over €60 a day. We still had a great time though and are glad we went. Late-May skiing at its finest in terms of the snow conditions
Tomorrow looking very doubtful, with a storm warning. Early doors looks like it could be a goer for a few hours - but it's all or nothing at Hintertux. If you go first thing, you can't buy a pass for 2 or 3 hours - only a day pass at full wack

Rolled my ankle really badly today in Porto, hope it's ok for Hintertux in 4 weeks from now.

@mountainaddict, I suspect they're taking the opportunity while there are very few customers to do maintenance work on the gondolas. It would have been nice if they'd reduced the lift price though.
In Hochfügen there is a half day morning pass. You buy a full day pass, then when you return the pass before 13:00 you get some money back. As fas as I can see, it's not advertised anywhere, but it's a thing if you ask for it. I've never needed to know if it's the same in Hintertux. It might be worth asking

@SaraJ, same in Mayrhofen and Zell, I actually asked about that in Hintertux last Autumn, as a friend was only skiing mornings all week while working for one of the British race teams. The answer then was no, so I'd imagine it would be the same at this time of the year also.

Hope your ankle gets sorted @JimboS. Ta for that @SaraJ and @swskier.
After a distinctly dodgy forecast last night, I put the alarm in for 06.30 this morning for a weather and Hintertux webcam check. We were good to go! Got to the parking garage for opening time and missed the queuing race teams by the time we'd got boots on etc.
Had some sun first thing, although the top lifts have mostly been in fog all day. The cloud has really thickened up now as this afternoon's storm (with possible lightning ) approaches.
Some nice snow again. Refrozen groomers early doors, then lovely soft snow and now sticky mush lower down. A bit stoppy starty snow on our last run and light rain starting. Think one more run will do us after another good ski (* Now 1.00pm after drafting the post during an earlier tea break).

I'm hoping to get up there again the week after next, not for skiing though. My non skiing sister and her non skiing husband are here for a holiday. They have never seen a glacier before so that will be a completely new experience along with a trip under the ice at https://www.natureispalast.info/en/ .

That's great @Chris_n. We did the Eispalast trip years ago and it was brilliant. Since then, they seem to have added a boat ride on an underground waterway, which looks absolutely amazing. People who've never seen a glacier will absolutely love it!
Regardless, the fantastic view from the terrace on the roof of the top gondola station is worth the cost of the ride up. Hintertux Glacier is just amazing!

Meant to say earlier, the season 2025/26 Hintertux prices are now showing online....It's a bargain €79 (yes, seventy nine euros!) for a day ticket |
It's definitely pricey, but considering the lack of alternatives and the fact you're only there a few days off season, it's not too bad. And the parking is free!

@mountainaddict, not sure when you fly back, but we walked from our place up to the Hohenstrasse on Sunday, and there was cars driving it. The website says it's closed until the end of the month, but the Zellberg Stüberl was open, and plenty had driven up there. The barrier at the toll in Zellberg was also up and unmanned.
Not sure if it's something you've done before, or if it would be of interest, but just an idea.

Thanks for that @swskier. I'll definitely bear it in mind for the future - looks great. We're currently at Memmingen Airport, about to board our flight home, after a great trip.
We had a lovely coffee stop with a view on the climb from the Zillertal to Achensee, then called at the lovely Bavarian town of Bad Tölz.

@mountainaddict, was that at the Panoramarestaurant Kanzelkehre on one of the hairpins? If so, there's a good hike from there up to the Astenau Alpe Hütte. It was my first work team event one evening after work for some dinner. Great views from up there.
Bad Tölz looks lovely, we've not really done much in Germany anywhere yet, it's a long list we have of things/places to see!

That's the one @swskier! That's worth knowing about the hiking route - ta.
Bad Tölz was great - we took a punt on it after seeing it signposted as a Historische Altstadt on our outbound trip.

Not really Zillertal but the cycle from Mittenwald to Bad Tölz via the Sylvenstein reservoir is mostly downhill and accessible by train (put bike on) at both ends. Even oldies like me can do it without an e bike (its around 55km). Some really great scenery.
Lift tickets are getting very expensive, suspect the Arlberg will be over €80/day next season but there are discounts for younger & older folk. It is pretty silly when it is cheaper for me to ski in St Anton than in SkiWelt! So not surprised about the Zillertal costs, though seems a bit much for a couple of runs on the glacier.
