It seems our hotel has charged us Tourist Tax for everyone in our group, including the under-18s
Is the tax charged on beds or guests?
If they have made a mistake, and we have asked the question (but they are ignoring our emails), how do we get the money back?

From memory it's a local, rather than national tax so the rules and rates would depend on where you were staying.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

You would need to contact the mayors office in the municipality you stayed in to try and get a refund. Good luck.

@garfy1971, don't know about local variations, but our recent party in Val Thorens were only charged for over 18s staying, per night, our under 18s didn't get charged.

@garfy1971, it is per person, and usually for over 18s (but some areas charge for over 12s) . Contact the hotel first , perhaps by phone? They may be ignoring emails if they are closed for business at the end of the season, phoning will confirm that if you don't get an answer. . Where were you staying?

Thanks. I called the hotel and was told that the 'person who deals with that is not there at the moment' so they are still operating for sure.
We stayed in Tignes Le Lac

@garfy1971, should be adults only https://taxesejour.tignes.net/ ... passed straight from hotel to Mairie so I think you'll need to approach the Mairie ...

@garfy1971, As said already, children are exempt from taxe de sejour - were the children's passports handed to reception on arrival?

Thanks all. Yes they had all the passports and I'm hoping it was am administrative error as they seemed a little disorganised.
I'll contact the Mairie

Hotel may not have submitted their Tourist Tax receipts to the Mairie yet, so they might still be able to sort out the refund with you.

This. They only have to submit Jan-April records and payments by 15 May. It will probably be easier to sort it out directly with the hotel, who have your records, than with the Mairie (who might first need to get confirmation from the hotel that they had made a mistake).

@under a new name, it is monthly, and 4 monthly for us, so I haven't done April yet, or paid up, as it isn't the end of the month yet.

@Charlie333, It’s set by the Commune and varies depending on the star rating of the property.
So it could be a few cents in a BB on an industrial estate or quite a few euros per day in the posh bits of Val D’Isere.

and even more if they have chosen not to apply for a star rating.
