Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

2026 Italian Ski Week Dates - /Carnival Week/School Holiday/Winter Olympics

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hello Everyone,
I’m organising our next ski trip and was wondering if anyone could help me understand the holidays and busy period in February in VAL GARDENA ( SOUTH TYROL)

I’m looking at a nice chalet in Selva ( Santa Cristina) to be exact.
Dates: Sat 7th February to Sat 14th 2026

Quick search online:

Carnival: February 14th - Feb 22nd
Winter Olympics: Friday 4th - 22nd February
School Holiday: are the same as Carnival in Italy ?

Is it wise to organise a trip to Italy next year in Feb?
Will it be mayhem on slopes?
It seems like we are avoiding carnival week unless I’m mistaken ?

Do you think it’s wise I choose another destination for 2026 and leave Italy for year after?

Thanks for your help

Hi kavehh.

I don't think your plan is a bad one. I would only point out that the Tyrol and Salzburg regions of Austria have school holidays at the same time you are thinking of. I doubt this will have much impact on skier numbers, but I suspect at least some will make the drive down.

I don't think the Winter Olympics will impact skier numbers where you are, but I would suspect the flights into nearby airports and car hire/transfers to be more expensive then usual due to surge pricing, but still probably lower then UK half-term week!

I'd say go ahead and book it.

@kavehh, Italy doesnt have "half term" holidays, Italians predominately ski at weekends. That said the largest number of visitors in Val Gherdëina would be from Germany and many of the Germany states will have their holidays in Fasching / Carnival week. Increasingly there is no "low" season and the ski resorts are busy every week so I doubt it will make much difference one way or other.

@kavehh, I was in Selva this Feb -- Hotel proprietor thought that the Olympics would have little (or no ) affect on Selva

Thanks everyone for sharing their views. Much appreciated .

We decided to go to La Plagne next season. From March 1st to 8th.

I'll share the details here for anyone keen to join us.
