Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Daleboot refitted them for me free of charge and they are now perfect. Best I’ve ever skied in. I LOVE THEM. Thanks James !

That must have been one hell of a week at work!!

Also, great news that the boots worked out in the end. Was there something really obvious that needed tweaking?

They were too big. They sorted and downsized.

At the risk of derailing this particular thread, I didn't want to create a new one for a very similar topic:

My wife had boots fitted for her prior to a recent trip from a very reputable fitter recommended by many people on this forum. I'll keep them anonymous for now.
Background; 7 years ago my wife got some rental boots that were too big, she had windscreen-wipers for skis, fell, broke her knee badly and hasn't been since.
This year she finally got round to going back so to mitigate the rental boot problem we got her her own boots fitted.

After 2x2hr lessons on the slopes she was in indescribable pain on the lower shin. Both lower shins just above the ankles were red and angry after the second day's lesson to the extent she couldn't even touch the skin. "I'm not sure whats more painful; this or breaking my knee" she said at one point.
We asked the advice of the instructor and also went to see a couple of places in resort to see if there was anything they could do, but to no avail so we ended up with a rental pair that enabled her to ski the remainder of the week. We were told at the fitting that the boots are supposed to be 'snug' and so assumed any discomfort would improve with wear on the slopes.

Everyone we spoke to in resort was surprised that
a) she was fitted in mens boots. Apparently female boots have different 'shape' to better fit ladies calves and ankles? In particular the liners?
b) she was fitted in 100 flex. Apparently this is far too stiff for all except expert / advanced female skiers.

Based on what we heard I'm a bit surprised she wasn't fitted in female boots with a softer flex. Wondering what folks think?

@yllen, probably better going back to the bootfitter and asking them - was there a fit guarantee in that adjustments could be made later?

re the flex, it depends on the boot - 100 flex in one make will not be the same in another make. It can certainly be suitable for an intermediate, but it depends

They are Salomon S/Pro Alpha 100. They do have a fit guarantee, but I don't know if that stretches to an exchange to a different boot, i.e. the female version.

And I did notice that in terms of the liner, the tongue is not 'overlapped' by the two sides anywhere near the same degree that my own overlap. And indeed her rental boots overlappped. The two sides of the liner barely meet the edge of the tongue. My assumption here is that her large calves are filling out the liner too much (due to being a smaller, male, liner)

Then you can post your own questions or snow reports...
Then you can post your own questions or snow reports...
a) a good fitter will match your anatomy to a shell and liner as a starting point - whether or not a boot is labelled male or female is largely irrelevant.
b) without knowing the skiers ability, height and weight it is hard to know if 100 flex is relevant or not. Flex also varies from boot to boot and can be massively influenced by the tongue in the liner.

Not enough information to be critical of the fitter in my opinion. You also have to realise that a fitter is only as good as the feedback they get from the client, albeit education of the client on how to give feedback is part of the job.

Glad your wife now has comfortable feet!

@yllen, contact you fitter and have a discussion, if it is a boot we have fitted we want to know and want to make adjustments to make it work (having checked back i can't see any of that boot sold to any female in our store)

what i can say (whoever the boot came from) is the following

there is technically no such thing as a mens boot, they are unisex or womens

in the S Pro alpha the difference between the unisex and womens model other than colour is the flaring of the back of the cuff of the shell, and the cut of the back of the liner collarina, these two things are to accommodate a larger lower calf muscle but don't generally affect the area that you are talking about........ the tongue is the same cut on both models,(although the tongue on the wms model as it is deemed higher in the range is removable and can be repositioned and adjusted a little more) where the the tongue was overlapping more on the rental boot that is down to that model specific liner not the difference between two versions of the S pro Alpha

in terms of flex, flex should not be considered as something related to skier ability, it is much more about body weight then lever length and biomechanics, and finally skier level

the area of the tongue just ahead of/above the ankles is where there are some meaty big tendons, if there are some biomechanical issues then the Anterior tibialis can "pop" and cause this type of pain, without seeing he foot it is impossible to say but if there is an issue there, depending on the biomechanical situation and how well the foot is supported it is unlikely it would show up in the store so is difficult for the fitter to pinpoint an issue that doesn't show. the solution normally involves some surgery of the boot tongue to create a pocket for the tendon to sit into without being compressed, but it is normally one area that if someone flags up an issue in store we would investigate a different model of boot from the outset, there are times when this happens in all boots, but due to the nature of the modification being fairly complicated its one you try to avoid if you can

hope that helps, if your fitter can't help reach out and we can certianly take a look

Difficult to tell from that picture but some of that redness looks like it could be a reaction to the sock/boot liner material, it’s not quite where I thought it was form the original description

If she's not been skiing for 7 years are you sure this isn't just a skin reaction to being clamped in boots for the first time and that the subsequent rental boots worked by being sloppier?

Boot huh! The bane of a skiers existence.

 You know it makes sense.

That looks very painful but agree it seems more like a rash/reaction. I got similar the first time I skied because I was silly enough to put my long johns down to my ankles

we have some of those; and I think she used them on the day this photo was taken; so two layers between boot and skin (shin protector, which she has worn before, and sock)

Have gone back to the fitters and we're booked in early May for a refit. So will update post that!
