Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

help understanding Alps skiing/how hard it is to stay a bit away from sites and drive/park at resort

@Mjit, youngest doesn't need ski school, he is pretty comfortable on anything he has been on and last winter happily threaded his way down a heavily moguled double black in Quebec that made me want to take off my skis and skid down on my butt. I wasn't going to bring him on the second week because it's just too hectic managing both of them, it's just a different experience with two kids rather than one, at least at this age. (They're great pals but also bicker loads and there would never be a moment of quiet if the three of us were together, I'd be in tears begging them to stop making so much noise.)

@PhilW, I take your point. I've been on a few trips to the alps in the summer and they feel almost suburban. Sure there are the towns you mention in the rockies, but they are typically outposts in wilderness, whereas the alps there is just infrastructure almost everywhere.

@luigi, thank you for your detailed post and suggestions on alternatives, and places to stay. I had a close look at that. It didn't completely deter me from my plans but it did inspire me to look harder for accommodation. I have booked an apartment at Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, literally the first building beside a main gondola, for 1100 euro for the week. The plan after that (when mom and the 7 year old depart) is to either hit Livigno for a couple of days, or the Arlberg, then have three days in Laax. That's all pretty close together. I'm torn between Livigno and the Arlberg because the latter is obvously much better for skiing, but we will have had a week of skiing in Austria at that point and trying Italy might be a nice change, plus of course the freestyle appeal of Livigno. Also we would only have about two days for Livigno/Arlberg, given we definitely want to go to Laax, and this seems fine for Livigno, but not enough for the Arlberg - we could save that for a week long trip sometime. Am still torn about it though.

I had been thinking of the Dolomites but will save that for a trip sometime when we are back living in Canada. Our local pass there (the IKON) gives 5 free days at Dolomiti Superski, so it seems dumb to go there now when we are buying day passes, even if you ignore the extra distance.

There are too many helpful comments in this thread to call them all out and reply with thanks, but I read them all with interest and am blown away by how informative the discussion is.

Last times I went to Lake Louise I commented that our basic hotel room on Banff Ave was cheaper for two weeks than our 1-bed self catering apartment in Andorra for one week, if that helps. Was about 7 years ago now. I think LL clawed it back with the lift pass though. Both booked less than 2 months in advance.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Going to any of those alpine destinations you need chains or snow socks if you don't have winter tyres (and it's wise, even if you do).

this photo from a couple of days ago made me think of you

As for France, stupidly busy at half term, especially on poor snow years where the local resorts are shut. Always a headache trying to work out where is least busy.
