 Poster: A snowHead

Hello, looking for some apartment help if possible! We stayed in Ynycio, Tignes Val Claret a couple of years ago which we really enjoyed due to the new, modern facilities, excellent location and view. Price is £500 more for the same room this year (April), plus extra on the lift pass and no cheap flights is stretching the budget too much. Could anyone recommend somewhere similar? Modern / new-ish facilities are ranked high as we don't eat out every night and like to have a cosy apartment to relax in. View and access to the slopes is also equally important. I've been looking at Tignes 1800 and Les Menuires as the prices are more reasonable, but I'm concerned these areas may be too quiet, and less attractive(snow) in April. I'm open to other areas, but snow reliability first or second week in April is a must. Thanks in advance.

I wouldnt recommend Tignes 1800 in April. Too low. The ski runs down wont be pleasant on the way home but you could get the bubble down. Options for beer/ food / supermarket much better in Le Lac and Val Claret. The accom in 1800 is good though. I think Tignes 1800 is great mid season and if you have kids/ beginners and want nice s/c accom with a decent pool etc then jan/ feb/ march it would work. They put in a new bubble a few years back which has improved the Les Brev and 1800 link and that same bubble goes up where you can get 2 new chair lifts (one new this season which replaced a chair lift removed a few years ago that was v v slow) So my suggestion is Le Lac/ VC which are 2100m

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks for replying, really helpful. Also favouring Le Lac and VC but I can't find a 'modern' apartment that is available and fits our budget this year. You have confirmed my reservations re: Tignes 1800m, but as we have teenagers who could stay out longer now, I am wondering whether we opt for longer days on the slopes then drop down before the lifts close. Either get the bus to other areas in the evening, or cook and relax in the apartment. I'd be interested to know thoughts on whether this could also work well with Les Menuires, and if anyone has visited both Tignes 1800 and Les Menuires, which they prefer?

@needsnowhelp, I've never been to 1800, have stayed in Brev, Lavachet, Val C but I do know Les Menuires very well and have been the last 3 seasons in April and will be going against this year.
View wise and access to the slopes needs a little bit of care but is certainly doable. You need to look at the Plan de Station to see where the apartment block is and look at orientation to see what you will be looking at.
I've stayed in Lac de Lou facing the front de neige and upper valley which is lovely and very convenient. I've stayed in le Jettay with a lovely view across the valley to the mountains. That was ski in, ski out but less convenient for the shopping precinct. And last year we stayed in Les Lauzes with mostly a view of another building and a 400m walk to/from the lift/slopes/shops.
Other thing to bear in mind is none of the apartments (private rentals) I would describe as particularly spacious or modern. You may have to do some searching for that and be prepared to stretch your budget.
Les Menuires is a similar altitude to 1800 so you are not gaining much in that regard but tbh I've never found it an issue as I will go high most of the day (as necessary) and just live with the slush on the home run.

@needsnowhelp - further update - I would suggest VC and Le Lac - you have teenagers (you dont say what age) but ive got 2 and they like VC and Le Lac and we take them to a few bars for apres ski and live music and they enjoy it with a Hot Choc. Loop Bar and Marmott Arms are good. Sometimes we stay out and eat in the pub or a resturant or go back to the apartment to cook. In Tignes you need to be careful as with many French resorts s/c accom can be small - which can ruin a holiday. We have stayed in Le Lac in Montana in their s/c apartments - they are an ok size for a family of 4 - 2 separate twin rooms. Living room and kitchen ok . Id recommend the main Montana building in the Hotel and not one of the separate buildings because you have easy access to the bar, pool table, lounge, pool etc which we used. Montana is about 20 years old and is 4* but many people say its tired and in need of a refurb in the s/c but ours was ok. We have also stayed in CGH Residence La Ferme in VC . That was a large two bedroom (they call these 3 room as the LR counts as a "room") apartment with 2 twin rooms, 2 bathrooms, large living room, large kitchen, loads of space , massive balcony, easy to ski in and out and would sleep 6 if you used the sofa bed in the living room - which i would not recommend. If you were a family of 4 this set up works well. Of the two areas i prefer Le Lac for ski access and evening fun but VC is also v good and of the two apartments i would say CGH was much better (but prefer Le Lac). Theres a CGH in Tignes Le Lac which ive never used but looks good. There is also Tignes.co.uk website to check and they have loads of apartments but do your research on size/ location. If you stay in La Ferme in VC dont expect an amazing view - they have just built a massive Club Med opposite it in the old Grand Motte Carpark so Id recommend a rear facing apartment which has mountain views and VC buildings. Some of the private apartments in Bec Rouge (Le Lac) are much larger as they are old and many have been updated and id recommend the location as thats ski in/ out and access to Le Lac for ski school and in the eve is good. You may also find that buying a package holiday works out cheaper than buying flights, transfers, accomodation and the hassle. Last year i tried to do it myself and Crystal were about £500 cheaper for exactly the same and the Crystal flights were at a nicer time. Cant comment on Les M but mates go there and say its really good in Feb half term and is the cheapest high resort in 3V. Good luck !

@needsnowhelp, this is probably too obvious but have you tried Le Taos in Le Lac?

@needsnowhelp, I would argue that Tignes 1800 is fine in the second week in April but if lac is where you want to be try Taos as @Gämsbock, suggests or ApartHotel Denali which is very modern (I can see into the apartments from my balcony), their sister place is called Cap Neige but go for mountain view not 'vue de ville' as they euphemistically call it as Vue de Ville overlooks the school yard and if you want a lie in - forget it!

Never stayed in Le Taos but Im aware of where it is which is ski in/out. I think its s/c but offer B&B. Its prices were higher than Montana/ CGH when i was looking on Crystal last year. Its relatively new for Tignes (maybe 10 years old). @chocksaway the red/blue run into 1800 can get pretty narrow in places/chopped up/ slush fest by the afternoon in April so might not be the most pleasant run home for @needsomehelp. You know more than me but ive always avoided it late season. Id plump for Le Lac/ VC/ Lav for location, altitude, evening options, access to skiing. Tignes 1800 involves a bubble and then one of 2 new chairlifts to get skiing (unless you ski down to L Brev) Wish id been out in T last week - looked amazing

Thanks all for the great advice! I've looked at Le Taos a few times, and I had also stumbled on Denali / Cap Neige in the last few days. Denali would fit the bill perfectly, but there is only one large apartment available the first week which is sadly too £££. I think if we are going to stay high in Tignes we might end up back at Ynycio and have to pay the extra.
I've also been extending the search a bit and I've found Manuka in La Plagne (MGM property). I think the apartments are private though as the photos vary per website? This puts me off a bit, but the price point is good and they are high (1970m) with views. We visited La Plagne when the kids were young and it suited us well then. Now they are teenagers I'm not so sure though. We quite enjoyed being near Cocorico in Tignes and watching La Folie Douche antics from the slopes last time... I'm concerned La Plagne will be less lively. If anyone has any knowledge about Manuka, or comments on La Plagne apres etc. please let me know!
