Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

THURSDAY 08 OCTOBER 2020

Here we go again Smile

Met Office calling for the first snowfall of the season in Snowdonia tomorrow evening so no better time to get excited about a Welsh Winter.

This winter we may all be 'confined to barracks' on & off so local turns could become even more precious.

For an overview of what's possible in the Brecon Beacons National Park of South Wales please take a look and read of this piece I did for Proper Adventure Journal

If It's Snowing, I'm Going: Skiing in the Brecon Beacons National Park, Wales

Opening Day last season was 10 November 2019. Fingers crossed for some October turns this winter.

@Mike Pow, Here's hoping we can hook up and ski a few of the Welsh hills Very Happy

In past years I've usually managed some turns on the Shropshire Hills but the last couple of years have been thin. Fingers crossed for a snowy winter....

https://www.carbonbrief.org/met-office-the-uks-wet-and-warm-winter-of-2019-20

Winter 2019/2020 was exceptionally warm in Wales and the UK. Very few days with any snow cover at Central Beacons 'resort level' (440m ASL). However the westerly/north westerlies were dropping some heavy, transient snowfall above 700m. So the days we did have were actually quite good! 12 days of skiing in the Beacons last season for me before Covid put a stop to things in early March. So I suppose that's about as bad a season as you'll get in Wales. Hopefully a good season to come snowHead

Will be interesting to see if the international travel restrictions lead to a revival of the domestic Beacons ski holiday. Where are those 250 plucky 80's ski warriors and the rope tows? Forget Rhydicar West - it's time to reopen Sella Rhondda snowHead

It’s certainly on the cards for myself and the young’un, if they lift local lockdown...

Love it to happen, not a great time for funding though. Would be there every week of the year if it happened

^Well that didn't quite work out did it Very Happy

On the bright side, the National Park have just confirmed that they will not be closing any footpaths across the Beacons during the 'fire break' lockdown, and presumably thereafter. However there are restrictions in place that mean you'd have to walk there or ride a bicycle if you want to get up on the hills - no cars. Beacons Backcountry legal department are looking into this!

Due to the possibility of the British Backcountry scene exploding this season.. and after having a couple of worthwhile seasons, I've created a dedicated Facebook group for Beacons Backcountry so we can organise trips/post updates etc without getting buried on the more established channels Wink

Ah yes, those two very minor hurdles when it comes to an indoor ski slope! I wish I had a fiver for every plan that bit the dust at this stage! Very Happy

Zip World on the site of the former Tower Colliery in Hirwaun, RCT is scheduled to open in March/April 2021.

Combined with Bike Park Wales in Merthyr and the Brecon Beacons National Park this could be the impetus to get the go ahead for the rest of the Merthyr leisure complex
