Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Still struggling on here with only a few cm's of new snow this week to add to the man made snow. Higher areas are on but care is needed off piste as still plenty of rocks to avoid. Lower areas like Coronet Peak still only surviving on the man made snow so quite limited. Crying or Very sad

^^^^ Hmmm.... rolling eyes

Fantastic hol so far - After Singapore; Melbourne (inc great day trip to Grampians National Park); Canberra (visiting friends, bush hike and whale watching trip to coast); we have now been in NZ for 2 days - and we love it Very Happy.

- Leisurely day yesterday with a stroll round Te Anau and a nice walk by the lake. Lovely little town.
- Fantastic day today - AM: Milford Sound cruise in amazing weather. Wow! It's just incredible. PM: Ascent of Key Summit - just over 5 miles return and about 1600 ft climbed. It was just stunning.

Oh! And two sunny days so far!

Doing a vineyard tour near Queenstown with a meal and wine tomorrow (hic Laughing). Now planning on Thursday being our first ski day. We've heard good and bad reports of conditions, so let's just wait and see. We'll just make the best of whatever is on offer.... Smile Great to be here and fantastic to be in winter in a northern hemisphere summer.

@mountainaddict, can’t speak first hand on conditions further south but with the recent weather and snow reports it looks like areas west and central are pretty good - so TC (if you don’t mind getting shafted on pass prices), or further north ohau, Dobson and roundhill have all copped a lot of snow recently.

Would also guess that the heli companies around wanaka and tekapo can get you into some great snow at the moment.

Canterbury is finally starting to get going. Could be a chance of some freshies to be had mid next week.

We bought a Remarkables/Coronet pass yesterday in Queenstown & spoke to the Brit who sold us them. She referred to social media rumours about Coronet Peak being set to close and described them as total bo11ock$...

We skied Coronet today (our first day on NZ snow!) and can confirm that conditions are nowhere near having to close. After hearing people in Queenstown describing conditions as 'desperate'and 'Concrete Peak,' we arrived at the ski area with some trepidation...

However, we had an excellent day on pretty decent snow - grippy hardpack and excellent grooming to start, becoming slick in a few places in mid afternoon. Yes, a few runs (and the back bowls) are closed and yes, the place is reliant on artificial snow - but we have skied far worse snow and less cover elsewhere in the world.

We're giving The Remarkables a try tomorrow, then it's a weekend of jet boat, via ferrata and maybe mountain biking before skiing 3 days around Wanaka from Monday Little Angel

Thought I would share the snow report from broken river yesterday. Happy

Good morning everyone. Looks like another great day of spring like conditions. Nice and sunny with sun loosening up some solid snow as the day goes by. With these early season conditions we do recommend that anyone that is new to rope tows or at an intermediate level please walk up the access road to Palmer Lodge. Also, access tow will be for accessing the field only. One ride up, and then stick to the main basin in order to help preserve the thin snow pack down low.
The tram is still down, so you know what day it is? Calf day. While hiking up today in your appropriate footwear be sure to finish each stride with an aggressive tow point. You'll feel it working. The tram being down is not a detriment, it's an opportunity. Hike up a few times a week doing this and say good bye to those sissy calves and hello to your new COWS! FULL BLOWN COWS! No, wait a second, that doesn't sound that great. Nobody wants cow legs. Instead we will call them MEGA CALVES! Still sounds nice, and still super powerful and badass! Let's go people. It's time to work those lower guns and Broken River is the place to do it! See you all up here where we can use our MEGA CALVES to shred these spring like conditions!

About time !

Went up to Hutt yesterday. It was surprisingly good. Plenty of cover now so next bit of snow should be all on for off piste.

Bloody busy though so I am guessing that everywhere else up this way isn’t so flash. I haven’t even bothered looking at anywhere else this season with the weather being so warm

Just started snowing on the mountains and it is forecast through until at least Monday. Something like 50cm total so not exceptional but much needed. Very Happy @hang11, will be getting more in his part of the country by the look of the maps.

Chile is also suffering bad. Too much sun and too little snowfall.

Not been a good season for the bottom half of the world.

Since yesterday the reported snow falls are. Treble Cone 30cm, Cardrona 23cm, Coronet Peak 15cm, Remarkables 13cm. So not bad and with more on the way we might finally be getting some proper coverage. Probably 30cm to 70cm in the next five days.

@mountainaddict, good to hear Cool I guess now that this persistent cold & soggy sou-west flow has finally arrived and saved the NZ ski season, we'll never know how bad it might have been. Rumours I heard were more based on that the snowmaking reservoirs were near empty so the manmade was on borrowed time, should the natural not arrive... or so I heard Little Angel hope you're enjoying the current wintery blast! Treble Cone is stunning on a clear day Very Happy

Hutt was good today. Off piste is a mix of wind polished ice and deep drifts. Got fresh tracks all day along with a couple of loooooong butt slides and snow wedgies

Groomers looked great but didn’t explore those too much.

Looks like South Island season is finally getting going

Snow down to sea level in Invercargill, Greymouth, looks like a winter wonderland down south! Ruapehu also getting dumped on but high winds and Game of Thrones-level rime ice build up on lifts & buildings preventing upper mountain opening and keeping me warming the sofa for the time being. Hoping for a Queenstown sojourn end of August to get some of that dry, squeaky southern snow for myself snowHead

Having been away for over a week I have some good news but not as much as hoped. In that time Coronet Peak has had something like 20cms of natural snow and quite a bit of snow making. It is not enough to really open up the off piste but the groomed runs have got considerably wider and are in good condition. The other ski areas have had quite a bit more so have more terrain open but still take care. Light snow falling again this morning but only a few cms expected.

A couple of days of light snow has made a huge difference at Coronet Peak. All the groomed runs in very good condition and quite a bit of the off piste is now ski-able. The higher mountains are really in good shape now.

A stunning day up above the valley clouds.
