Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Saalbach - Hinterglemm - Leogang - Fieberbrunn 2019/20 Official Unofficial Thread

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Earlier than usual, but it seems appropriate to kick off this year's new thread with this piece of news:

"From the coming 2019/20 season all lift tickets in Saalbach will be issued as "Ski Alpin Cards", meaning that they will be valid in Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm, Leogang, Fieberbrunn, Zell am See and Kaprun. Pre-sale season tickets will be €590 and the season will officially start on 29th November!"

Having said that, the "Ski Alpin Card" is strictly speaking the name they give to the season ticket, which covers the period 12th October - 3rd May. I assume therefore that the normal lift tickets will cover the whole expanded area, as above, but will be available for purchase as from 29th November.

It's a little disappointing to note that the Easter bonus, which has traditionally enabled children up to the age of 15 to obtain free lift tickets after the middle of March, provided that a parent is buying a ticket for at least 4 days, is now restricted to the period 4th - 13th April. However children up to age 15 (born in 2004 or later) get half-price tickets all season, and children born in 2001-2003 get a 25% discount.

If anyone's in need of information about Saalbach, I am happy to email them my comprehensive guide, which should answer most questions. Also, if looking for accommodation, I may be able to help, as I have quite a few contacts amongst the British community who have apartments or rooms to let in and around Saalbach.

Quite a significant season, as the ski area will increase from 270km to over 400km with the new link to Zell am See/Kaprun. Also the Zwoelferkogelbahn is being completely renewed for the coming season. I will be there for a couple of months in the summer, so it will be interesting to see what progress has been made and catch up with any other news.

6 of us will be in Leogang for 2 weeks in January... Looks like we may have plenty of skiing without having to drive to Kitzbuhel or Brixen!

@kb36, Yes, it’s a 6 minute uphill walk (allegedly) along the road from us. I've tried to look at its website, but for some reason my phone is refusing to load it. Also on booking.com it’s coming up as fully booked for every week I’ve tried.

A surprising amount of excitement is being generated by the announcement that Austria has finally decided to ban smoking in bars and restaurants from November this year. I didn’t realise that people felt so strongly - I confess that I’d become used to it, except when the fug has been so bad that it’s made my eyes sting and driven me out, which was a rare occurrence last season.
I know that some of our bar-owning friends are worried about possible (likely) complaints about noisy huddles of smokers late at night, disturbing the sleep of hotel dwellers. All the more reason for choosing one’s hotel carefully.
One thing that always irritates me is the fag ends strewn around where smokers congegrate. For many it seems that disposing of butts considerately is too much trouble.

@tatmanstours, it became the norm everywhere else, so most people are now used to clean smells/air more or less. You'll see that most people will be gradually happy with the new situation, except heavy smokers who seldom have consideration for the others

@tatmanstours, I am a non smoker and was very happy when the ban finally arrived in Bavaria. However I thought ban or no ban the situation was much improved in Austria already. Yes there were (are until November) still small smoky bars (the place at St Anton railway station comes to mind) but I found anywhere serving food or trying to attract a wider clientele had already exiled the smokers to the terrace outside or to some poky back room. I am sure there will still be complaints about the number of folk smoking on the apres ski spots terraces' but not sure much anyone can do about that (or the piles of cigarette butts.....)

That is great news! It was the only downside to an afternoon of cracking apres in Austria. It does push the problem outside but luckily in ski resorts it’s often too cold to hang around outside for long!

@tatmanstours, We are thinking about Saalbach next year - have already booked flights into Salzburg 22 Feb '20 for a week. 3 adults (my wife, sister and myself) and 2 kids (9 and 7). You mention in your 20 May post that you may be able to help on accommodation. Can you let me know of any apartments/rooms/contacts you may have? Also your Saalbach guide sounds v handy! Really appreciate any assistance. R

Hi Tatmantours,
I’m looking at Saalbach for a trip next March. We mostly do four night trips but this time a few of us might go for the whole week.
Is it easy enough to get accommodation for four nights?

@tatmanstours, with you about the fag ends, I do ask people on the mountain to pick up their dog ends and put it in the nearest ashtray. I noticed at the end of last winter that the ticket office had pouches for free that you can use but didn't get round to asking for any, I now have.

I will be carrying a few spares on the mountain this winter and give one to anyone who drops their dog end on the snow Very Happy

@radar, will be recognisable to anyone who is skiing the slopes of Saalbach and doesn't already know him, by his black eyes and thick lip Laughing

@maddness, Depending on numbers, my advice would be to rent an apartment for a week, on the basis that some will stay for four nights and others for the whole week. Easier, and probably no more expensive than trying to find accommodation for a short trip. We have availability in March if it's of any help. P.M. me if so.

Anyone holidaying in Saalbach this summer may like to know that there will be a street party with entertainment, stalls and live music/DJs every Wednesday from 6.00pm (subject to fine weather) outside the Crazy Deer bar and Del Rossi restaurant.

The Hecherhuette is also doing its famous "all you can eat" barbecue every Thursday evening from 6.00pm, and sometimes on other evenings too. Phone up to book in advance (and mention my name, in case it earns me a drink). You can drive up there from the centre of Viehhofen - highly recommended! Gluttons will be particularly appreciative of the quantity and quality of food available, including fillet steak. After the meal they do apres-ski songs and dancing on the terrace, which is always a laugh.

I tend to use Holiday Autos for 1-2 hires per year, though with my own Excess Insurance. They're just a broker, but they are usually cheaper than others and just as good. Plus I get 8% cashback through a work discount scheme wink

Excellent advice! Holiday Autos have always given me great prices, and don't seem to deal with any of the more cowboy car hire companies. And your tip about using your own Excess Insurance is another great money-saver. 8% is a great cashback deal. For those of you who don't have such a good work discount scheme, www.topcashback.co.uk gives you 6.3%.
