Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Looking for ski partners for next season

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi. I am new to skiing, did my first week this year and immediately fell in love with it! Planning to spend some time at the snowdome in Tamworth over the next few months taking lessons but very much a beginner. Looking to do 2 or 3 week long trips to Europe next season. None of my friends or family ski so am looking to meet others to go with. I will be in ski school most of the time but would be nice to have another beginner /s (or very patient more advanced skier/s) to ski with when not with the class. I am not limited to any dates or resorts. However, a friend of the family has a small apartment in tignes and said I can use it free for one week - but I need to let him know asap as they are already taking rental bookings. For the other trips I am happy to go with another solo person or join a group. Feel free to private message me to discuss options. I realise this is probably way too early but need to let them know dates for the apartment.

Also anyone that goes to Tamworth snowdome let me know if you would like to meet up.

Sorry forgot to add. The apartment can sleep 3 (1 double bed and 1 single). They said it's ok to have one sleep on the sofa too if necessary, but I think this would probably be too cramped. As I said before the apartment won't cost us anything, but we would need to pick a date within the next few weeks. I realise it's probably too early for most, but it is what it is. I'm not expecting a definite yes off anyone right away, but like I said feel free to message me and we can discuss options.

Also I do enjoy apres so would prefer others that also do. Doesn't have to be anything too crazy though Toofy Grin

@Amberski, Hi, welcome to snowHeads (and to skiing in general)! snowHead

I would recommend you seriously consider going on one of the snowHead bashes, especially either the preBBWUW (n.b that link is to last season's, this coming season it will be 25th Jan to 1st Feb 2020) to Alleghe or the Birthday bash the following week (1st Feb to 8th Feb 2020) to Arabba. There's a wide range of skiing abilities amongst the participants on a sHs bash, and you'll find fellow sHs are very supportive of newcomers to this skiing lark. Madeye-Smiley Both the preBBWUW and the Birthday bash are quite easy to get to - you book your own flight to Venice and there is a subsidised transfer bus from the airport to the resort. The preBBWUW in particular would be well suited for you in my opinion, the ski area is moderate in size and there are plenty of gentle slopes (as well as some harder ones) to let you find your skiing "feet". Alleghe itself is situated by the side of a lake (frozen in winter obviously), and the hotel which admin arranges there (the Sporthotel Europa) has very friendly staff and excellent food. The hotel runs a non stop shuttle direct from the hotel up to the gondola ski lift station (and collects you to take you back to the hotel at the end of the day too). The deal which admin arranges for the preBBWUW includes the local area ski pass too and is very good value. Oh, almost forgot to mention - the area for both of these bashes (the Italian Dolomites) has outstanding mountain scenery, and the food at the mountain restaurants is excellent (and very reasonably priced compared to some other ski areas). Smile

@Amberski, the two things I’d suggest for people new to skiing are Snowheads bashes and UCPA (Action Outdoors are the U.K. agent) with full time instruction.

I will have a look at the bashes. They sound like they might be a good fit. Is it possible to do ski school while on the bashes?

I had a friend go on a ucpa climbing course and he didn't like it so that kind of put me off them a little. Maybe he was just unlucky, I will check them out. Whatever I do I will definitely do ski school so will have instruction through that

Well that might make things a bit easier. I still would like to do 1 trip to tignes though as I have heard good things about the area plus having free accommodation seems like too good a deal to turn down.

Certainly, that's obviously something which you can arrange with the local ski school. If you have lessons in the morning you could arrange to meet up with other sHs at lunchtime and then do some skiing with them in the afternoon. snowHead

Welcome to snowHeads @Amberski, snowHead

A couple of the bashes have instruction available.
The Pre-Season Bash in December and the EoSB in April are big enough that we can have a roster of [rather top notch] instructors on-hand throughout the week. These are shared out between group lessons, more specialist clinics and private sessions. They are all instructors that multiple snowHeads have declared their 'favourites' so, it's fair to say, all well above average in terms of talent.
Still, you're quite at liberty to book into a ski school if you're looking for a more "follow me" style of instruction.

At most of the other bashes that you'd be interested in at this stage, there's no instruction formally on offer but there's always a local ski school and as @Alastair Pink says, snowHeads are a social, supportive bunch so you'll not be short of help trying to figure out/find what you need.

+++++1 for the bashes. Was pretty much a beginner (Snowdome only) when I did my first bash two years ago; the Birthday Bash in Arabba. Absolutely loved it. Did the same Bash this year and am doing both the PreBB and the BB next year. Great skiing, hotels and food, stunning scenery, but most importantly of all, excellent company. I really can't fault anything about them. Well, maybe @admin's choice of music for the party; wink but other than that, it's 5 stars all round. snowHead snowHead snowHead

@Amberski, try and get as much time under your belt in a Snowdome before you go as you can. I did all three of the full day courses the Chillfactore do. All in all my mate and I put in about 50 hours in the Chillfactore before we hit the mountain for the first time. It will add greatly to your enjoyment when you get there and allow you to spend less time in the ski school whilst there and more time out and about on the mountain. Just my view FWIW.

@Amberski, in terms of way too early... we have two weeks booked for next season already. The first one I booked in March for the following Feb. That looks a great offer to me. Why not pick a date and get that secured with your friend. Then work on people you know to get somebody to join you?

Well I'm definitely tempted by the bashes they sound great. I would be happy to have the tuition provided, I just know I definitely need some and while I'm sure everyone is helpful I don't want to be slowing them down!

I will be getting to the snowdome as much as I can, so that should help.

I spoke to him this evening about the apartment. He's said as long as I let him know in the next 2 weeks. So I will leave it open for now and hopefully find some others. If that deadline comes I will pick some dates and then keep trying to find people.

Thanks for all the help so far!

Hi Amberski,
Nettybetty here. Bashes are indeed a fantastic way to meet some wonderful people who are also generous with advice and encouragement for a newly-hooked skier!
I'm looking for a ski-buddy or group as I can never make the bash dates due to work. I'm reasonably confident about getting down most pistes except black runs but am very happy to go at a gentle pace and love pootling down nice wide blue runs and feeling the dance of it! Also very happy skiing alone while you're at ski school - and would love a couple of lessons too.
I could go for a week from 19th Oct to 1st (ish) Nov 2019 or soon after 20th March 2020.
Tignes is a fantastic resort so it would be a shame for you to miss the opportunity of being in your friend's place. I'll do some research on tendencies of snow conditions there early in the season - tomorrow as it's now gone 2am!
Feel free to pm your mobile and we can chat. Reception is terrible so I usually miss calls.

Another vote for the SH Bashes.

They always deliver good value, a good crowd, and good riding.

@Amberski, +1 for the Bashes.

FWIW, I’d suggest if you’re keen on experiencing Tignes, that a Pre Season Bash there, with instruction, would be good, before going independently in an apartment.

Why? Because for a 2nd week skier, Tignes can be a very challenging area IMO. Intimidating in some conditions, eg if icy or low visibility.

Building skills, learning your way around the area, with support from SnowHeads who know it well, would be far better than ‘diving in the deep end’.

I say this as someone who has been skiing Tignes/ Val D regularly for 30 years. I’ve also introduced several early intermediates to it.

I realise the lure of a free apartment is tempting. Nevertheless, right place at right time more important I think.

Hi, sorry I didn't check for a few days! Yes I am still looking. My first week was in Meribel. On the last day the instructor took us to Courcheval too but the rest of the week I just stayed in Meribel. I will be doing ski school every day so will not have to find my own way around. For the afternoons I will stick to areas I already enjoyed or ask the instructor for suggestions where to go.

@Amberski, yes, Meribel not too shabby for a first week skiing :lol

Tignes possibly a little step up in challenge but sounds like you’re ready for it.

Even so, the early December Pre Season Bash in Tignes is highly recommended. Good value and excellent English (or Scottish) speaking tuition on offer.
