Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Well I would put ski tourers in the minority of skiers, the average skier is only doing lift served downhill. The trick is not to sweat in the first place. I find vents more important than material. I actually have a gortex jacket (got a cheap deal) - I'm not against gortex or "technical clothing" it is good, but I would never pay that much for clothing. Plenty of cheap gear that's more than adequate for me and that includes touring.

Well, as I said, to each their own. In my experience, quality gear is worth the money. The ‘cheap’ gear isn’t really because it wears out much faster so over time you actually pay more.

If you then factor in buying quality kit at the right, as in season end, time of year then it’s about half the usual price which makes it a no-brainier.

Having started out as an impecunious student with C&A gear I still find it amazing that, now, I can be warm and dry with minimal volume in incredibly harsh conditions and whilst working up a sweat.
The best skier and most of the lifties I know are currently wearing kinko gloves (https://www.amazon.com/Kinco-Pig-Skin-Glove-Gloves/dp/B01CFWIRIC?tag=amz07b-21) which they all seem to think are better than any ski gloves they've ever had. Of course no flashy name or goretex, but seem to do the job.
Hmmm ... definitely not what I’ve seen. Most of Switzerland and Austria, which is where I mostly ski, seem to use Hestra which, again, whilst not cheap have a reputation for lasting.
Could probably put together an adequate whole ski outfit from decathlon for the price of an arcteryx jacket.
Definitely, I agree, but it wouldn’t be anywhere near as good or last as long.

I think, fundamentally, if you work out the cost/ski-day that good quality (as opposed to very expensive fashion gear) gives the best cost metrics AND it works better. There’s another post on this thread about Stellar with their new Price Model. However, funnily enough, the piece prices are still very similar to what other tech brands charge.

In the UK:

Stellar Guide Jacket ( SEQ-Z650-3L): £378 (equiv)
ME Tupliak (Pro Shell) or Havoc (C-Knit): £350
Alpkit Definition: £229

So there pricing model is making them cheaper than Arc'Teryx/Patagonia/Norrona but still at the same level as the next tier down (in price/not quality) whilst giving the buyer no option to try on/see the products in the flesh whilst also using materials people haven't heard off and not actually giving any details of and more expensive than online only (though they now have two shops.....) direct sale products with unbranded membranes.

They'd be bottom of the list out of the three above.

With Mountain Equipment I think the comparable jacket looks like the Changabang which is more expensive. And not heard of the Alpkit but looks like a climbing jacket without snow skirt etc so not sure comparable. I’ve got 2 mates with the guide shell and it’s a high quality bit of kit. They are both very impressed. Quality and design comparable to my Norrona kit which has been great. Check out the video by their mountain guide for some of the features. Their gear has aged well if only on first season. There’s quite a lot of technical info here if that’s your gig
https://www.stellarequipment.com/ch/m-stellar-shell-jacket-orange

And the guy who runs it knows his stuff having been a designer at Haglofs, Peak Perf, North Face, J LindBerg.

Its what I’ll be looking at next year when I can justify some new kit!

The mate I was skiing with took the photo as he told me « you wheeeel aveee to jeump zeeere Bob » It’s on the North West face of the infamous Bec des Rosses. Knee is fine on powder landings. Hard pack not so much!

Steeps are fun in soft snow as the snow naturally acts as a break. It’s transformed/icy or wind scoured steeps where there is a low margin for error and if you fall you don’t stop Shocked Best to avoid those conditions where possible!
