Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Thought it might be worth starting this - we'll be in LGB late next week and (fingers firmly crossed) looks like we might get some decent skiing in for the few days we're there.
45cm at the top so far and as long as those rain/snow limit stays down there might be more this weekend.

@MazDave, well done - starting this year's thread was lost in one of my “to do” lists..
It's bloody freezing here at the moment but calm and clear. The newer snow machines in the Maroly secteur have been working overtime so piste skiing looking good for opening this weekend at LGB and Balme up at La Clusaz. Hope everyone’s had a good summer and here’s hoping for a season with as much snow as last year but with a bit less rain and more blue skies !

@MazDave, @gvj,

Hi both,
Can't believe it's that time of the year again..... Quick visit to collect our skis last weekend when the ski test was cancelled before going on to Valloire with friends. Friday lunchtime we enjoyed a beer in the sunshine outside Marcel's and on Sunday evening when we returned our skis we could barely get up the mountain it was snowing so hard! As we know, much can change in 48 hours and it looks very white at the moment. Enjoy your stay @MazDave, and see you soon @gvj,

Skiied for a couple of hours today- snowing at Chinaillon when we arrived at 10.30 - lunch in Chalet du Maroly and then a few more runs after - tricky visibility and lots of snow meant we’d had enough by 2pm so back at the hotel drying out now. Slopes were very quiet, almost deserted.

Tomorrow doesn’t look good- we’ll see what the web cams look like before making a decision in the morning. Sunday looks a bit better.

Best I can say at present is that temperatures are due to drop and there’s currently good piste cover, also LGB piste grooming is very good. As for fresh dumps Sad .... keep those digits crossed.

We were on the slopes all day today and there was fairly good coverage everywhere we went (a very few brown patches) It was reasonably busy but no lift queues. Snow was mostly fairly soft and pretty easy going. Lack of contrast due to cloud was the main challenge.

As long as there’s not too much rain in the next day or so I suspect it’ll be ok when you arrive. Would be nice to see some snow in the forecast though...

That’s us done for this short visit - off to Paris tomorrow for Christmas

Had a brief few hours en famille in Chinaillon today as parents + sibling & family are there for their regular 2 weeks over Xmas/New Year.
Thank goodness for snow cannons is all I can say, without them no play... Pistes firm, scrapey in places, bits of grass showing through here and there. Looks like the home run to LGB is complete still, between fields of green! Pick of the pops were the pistes off Maroly, Combe Tolar was busy and not pleasant, and the runs down the other side from top of Floria/Tolar were OK if thin - almost spring slush later this afternoon were the softness had been pushed up.

Locals tell me that LGB is in a far better state than La Clusaz (possibly with the exception of La Balme).
Reason being that LGB still have enough water resources to use for snow making.. unfortunately the droughts earlier this year forced La Clusaz to divert it’s snowmaking reserves into the town drinking water supply Sad

Just back from 3 days in La Clusaz. Fairly big dump two days before we arrived, and another decent fall on Thursday. Luuuurvely conditions, especially in the Balme sector. Routes down to the village are all open, and very much skiable.
Off piste isn’t my thing, but lots of people seemed to be having a great time in the safe n easy off piste in Balme.

And still the snow keeps coming!! Superb conditions here in LGB at the moment and the weather better than forecast over the last couple of days with good visibility and sunny periods to be enjoyed. More snow overnight and today so may be a day only for the hardy out there today but I’m told it may clear later on so we will see. Anyone coming out here next week should have fantastic conditions

@Richard_Sideways,

I’m sure you have done your research but this is a good read https://www.j2ski.com/ski_resorts/France/La_Clusaz.html

Also if you are with family or new skiers the area of Manigod is perfect
We are there half term and it will be our 5th year I a row, we love it

You will not have a lack of snow !

This was on Sunday morning BEFORE it really started to dump. Massif de Beauregard which is only 1690 m high.

We really like La Clusaz - our favourite restaurant is Chez Arthur at the top of the Cret du Merle chairlift.

Heading out to stay in St Jean de Sixt for the first time on Saturday, can't wait - conditions look pretty epic! We are a group of intermediate skiiers and boarders - any 'must do' pistes? And any top tips for a bit of Apres? Many Thanks!

@caspriddy, Hi, are you staying with Skiweekender or self catering or ?
Are you planning to ski Grand Bo or La Clusaz ? Looking for cruisey blues, gnarly blacks, off piste ? So many possibilities, especially given current conditions...

@gvj, Hi! We are self-catering, and no hire car so will be using the ski bus. Thinking of doing a day at Grand Bornard and two at La Clusaz (we have full area ski passes). Long cruisey blues and reds are always fun (and are there any really flat areas for us snowboarders to avoid?!), not so much gnarly blacks, and easy 'off the side' off piste is good - we only have three days so will probably try to make it first lift/last lift wink Thanks!

As a family of boarders we only found to definately avoid the blue off the back of Beauregard (La Clusaz)called "Les Prises".......it has lots of flat bits, not fun on a snowboard unless hammering it!!!! It's a shame as it links to the Croix Fry lift - we didn't get to that area last year so I'm assuming we have to get a bus to there?

The other blue off Beauregard Guy Perillat is great fun, and red Le Neve are great

Will watch out for les prises. At least the kids are on skis this time out so shouldn't be an issue for them and I'm happy to hoon the flat bits normally.

Thanks guys - it's so hard to tell from looking at a piste map what will be a brilliant valley run and what will be a long walk home! Les Prises is to be avoided!

In LGB Colle des Annes is worth the slow lift for the close up view of Pointe Perce if the sun is out but the long blue back to Duche could be tedious for boarders if conditions are slow. Likewise the green Lac run. If you like a long red then the top of Lachat all the way back to the village is a hoot in the right conditions. Tons of easily accessible side piste fun all over the mountain - enjoy.

As far as I remember, the top bit of Les Prises from Beauregard over to Manigod wasn't so bad, but then it got flatter after that - but I may be misremembering. L'envers is even worse, plus had lots of roads to cross, taking skis off. La Motte was on the flatter side, and le Plan. Le Var was a very long walk - completely and utterly flat.

Echo the comments above- in LGB the runs off Lachat are great especially the Deneval Maxx - and off Terres Rouges - don't take the Terre rouge chairlift - it's really really slow- take Maroly instead- Terre rouges is our favourite mountain restaurant! L'Aiguille in la Clusaz is great- coming back from L'etale and manigod to La Clusaz does involve flat bits and road crossings but is worth it! As a family we've been going summer and winter for the last 7 years in our motorhome- we love it- will be there again at half term! Usually do one day in LGB, one day in la Clusaz- ski bus not too much hassle!

@caspriddy, you will not be disappointed, it’s a hidden gem and the views of Mont Blanc from Balme are a must see , as is the huge amount of off piste from that area.

It will be interested to read your thoughts on your return.

Like a few here we have been several times, infact it’s the last five years and we return again this half term. Can’t wait

Careful information! Due to poor traffic conditions in the region as a result of the heavy snowfall still underway, the collar pass is closed at least until Saturday in the day.

Snow chains or tires are mandatory for all vehicles to access the campsite and move to the campsite.

I'd also add to avoid the green at the bottom of the map (https://en.laclusaz.com/alpine-skiing-area-map.html) Le Var, it's more of a cross country ski run, there's diddly squat vertical drop so you'll be doing a lot of walking if you think you can go from Balme to La Clusaz. That being said, it's great in the evening as the sun setting for a walk or to take the kids sledging up there Toofy Grin

Question, how do we get over to the Croix Fry lift area - Masif de Manigold? Does the bus service go there, if so where do we change - we staying at Le Ferney (Balme) end of the bus route so normally have to change at Bossonnet to go to La Patinoire? Last year we stuck to Beauregard, the main La Clusaz town centre lifts and Balme but the boys will be much stronger and capable this to go all over.
