Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

What's the smallest daypack that holds AVI gear properly.

I've bought an Osprey Farpoint 40 for my carry-on but that's no use for a day out in the side country and I'm looking for a good, small, lightweight, daypack I can use to carry Avi gear and the basics for a day off piste. It's going to need some way of carrying skis/board too. There'should just too much out there to make an informed decision and I'm sure there are some of you with good/bad experiences? Cheers, John

I have a Mammut Rocker Pro 15L which takes all my kit (and the airbag, obvs) plus spare glasses, fleece, water etc. It’s tight, but it fits.

15L with no airbag would be plenty?

https://www.evocsports.com/products/backpacks/fr-day-16l with a back protector and all the ski/board carriage
or look also at the ortovox range but be aware Literate size relates to back length (i.e. 16 L = S, 18 = L)

@auntie masque, if you want an airbag the Mammut Ultralight 20l is awesome - light as a feather and plenty of room for day trip gear

Although a bit flimsy for ski or board carry.

Standard airbag price, no? I paid 650chf. Mine’s holding up well with skis strapped to it most weekends. Additional bags are 100chf so flexible setup

The light weight and low profile for chairlifts is wonderful coming off an original Snowpulse (had that one for 10 years!)

@auntie masque, ...have I interpreted your question correctly...AVI gear meaning aluminium shovel, probe, head torch, and water, energy bars, spare gloves, phone etc but not airbag? If that's the case then the best I have found is the Ortovox Freerider 18. Has a built in back protector and loads of well-positioned straps designed for ski carry.

I've got a snow drifter 20l by Patagonia and can't fault it. Good price, incredibly well made (as you'd expect from Patagonia), has options as far as ski carry goes and looks great to boot!

@auntie masque, Or try one of these (I have the previous version, the bandit which works really well, and has a built in avalung)

Have a lack of straps to catch on chair lifts etc, which I don't like on the dakine heli, it is all very clean.

@auntie masque, worth the extra money if you value your own life I’d suggest. I never go offpiste without my airbag, and also never ski offpiste with anyone who hasn’t one, most people do I suggest if they are serious about offpiste skiing and in a group.

Just watch out on the back length - some probe and shovel handles are too long for these smaller packs. The ortovox Freerider 18 just fits them in, others just double check
