A 35yr olf British Freerider was seriously injured when he hit (with his head) a Spruce tree. Amougst the injuries was an open tibia fracture.
The accident happened of the Albonagrat below the Kaltenberghütte in the Schwammwald towards Langen.
Helicopter rescue was impossible because of the Weather.
The high risk Avalanche Condtions also meant the Emergency rescuers were unable to ski down to help.
A 10 man rescue team included Alpine Police & Emergency Doctor decided to ascend up 1 hour in deep snow throught the froest from Langen on touring skis.

Yes, less busses makes sense & a permanent Gondola link over to Zurs is great idea. Im not in favour of a huge Gondola up to Albona. Seems expensive option ratther than just renewing the Albona chairlifts. It ha s not been made clear weather the new middle & Top station on Albona will incorporate restauarants?
It seems they are going to start this summer with the Ubungshangbahn in Zurs.
I understand that the Valfagehrbahn will be realined at Alpe Rauz for ease of access to the new Gondola base station.
Will be interesting to see how the designers, engineers of this Gondola link (Alpe Rauz to Zurs) deal with the prevailing winds i.e what limtiations (km/ph & x Winds) before they have to close it .
Things seem to be moving on Avalanche Control (also Rendl)

Brightened up as the day went on. Definitely very cold at times, especially in the wind. Snow in terrific condition, but watch out for where it is wind affected. Lower down south facing slopes quickly transformed when the sun came out at lunch. Smashing closing party at Heustadl.

Yesterday best day ever guiding first Rendl backside down to the dam wall the powder on the way down was the softest feeling powder I skied. After that we charged to shindler as it had just opened. Wow we got very first tracks on the front face after traversing across under the shingle chair we all waited on the edge right under the chair with big grins on our faces waiting our turn for what was to come woo woo. Then all over schindler after that and traversed right side face far side down to valfagr chair. Today heading to albona probably to do backside.

Pretty cold today. Snow still in great condition. Snowing fairly heavily outside. Not settling in town just yet, but will do overnight if the snowfall keeps up.

clear first half day - first found some untracked lines off right side of schindler bowl, then over to stuben traversing along the road side face below the cliffs off valfager, then to top of albona 2 went off to the left side looking up and then did a 20min steep hike then some great fresh pow all the way over past the star wars concrete structure. clouds then set in so other side of albona was a no-no. Snowing now - probably doing sonnenkopf tomorrow.

Stuben again today hiked up to the cross from albona restaurant what a view. Went down side opposite to route to lange. Guide set off a small slide then lost his ski when straight lining it. Another little slide had one of the others sitting on it floating on top. Just a Couple inches of wet snow layer on top. Pow really good to start at top but got v thick as we went down. One more day tomorrow.
sunny blue skies.

Taps was pretty crazy last night.
that's me done, back in UK. 24 days of skiing in a row legs need a break.
The guiding was excellent. The slides I mentioned weren't big enough or enough snow to be of any real danger. I have it on go pro ill get round to posting and u can see, got loads of great footage. The guide was a top guide and knew exactly what he was doing and delivered some excellent days.
Today we did stuben again traverse there below valfagar cliffs to skip chairs, hiked up the left side and down to St christoph then over to rendl far far left through the av barriers and then found some sweet soft untracked powder with no one else around while most other slopes had become hard, down towards st jacob then back through track to rendl slope.

Folks
Looks like the Mega Gondola Project to link Alpe Rauz with Zurs & Alpe Rauz to Albona is now a reality.
There has always been opposition from environmentalists, whose criticism of this major still exists in parts
However it now seems a common denominator has been found ( Bus Free argument ) and the Lift companys (Zurs & Stuben) now confident that this project will already begin this summer.

very warm out today, skinned up to the cross then down to Langen, then hot foooted it (literally) over to Rendl and off the back back to St Anton.
Some interesting snow in places but also find some nice stashes, but reckon that could be it for powder unless it snows again. Found some very crusty wind affected stuff.
Hopefully spring snow to come this week!
@nozawaonsen, any view on the chance of rain this weekend??

Maybe some modifications to existing ones but no major new ones. The Rauz - Zurs link is gondola-only in both directions I think, so no new skiing there. The Stuben lift meets existing pistes at the top.

Today cloudy with some snow/drizzle. Just had 3 days of great late season skiing with blue skies and half decent snow. Staying in Warth and skied across to Zurs on fairly empty pistes and virtually no queues apart from Ruffikopf. Best snow still is Muggengrat, Madloch, Trittkopf, but OP is heavy and unstable. Warming up again tomorrow.

They do their best to close pistes when temperature rises.

@kitenski, Don't you wear Pieps all the time? We ski with av gear including ABS all the time, even if on piste for the day, you never know when you may need/ want it? I've seen some big slides like that, most notably one that came across Steissbachtal a few years ago, another up on Rendl, this time of year it's quite common-place. Its a great piste that one down from Muggengratbahn to Zurs, with big slabs above it.....darn inconvenient having to ski round all that av debris! Another amazing factor 30 day today....

Stories going round that the Weisse Rausch won't be going down Happy Valley this year (currently closed due to avalanches) but instead heading towards Tanzboden talstation and down via Kandahar to Zammermoos and then as normal.
Nice weather today and typical spring pistes nice and slushy most of the day and very few people on them.

Nope I carry kids spare layers, food, lunch, water for 4 etc etc when skiing on piste with the kids so enjoy not having the extra weight of ava gear!
