Well, there's a bunch out there whatever the conditions. We have transport so thinking Ischgl is best bet, anywhere else to consider?
|

|
@Dr John, almost snowing down in Schruns (700m) right now, so St Anton, Stuben etc and Ischgl should be getting some. Other than the glaciers, Kuhtai and Obergurgl are also open, and I believe Serfaus are still planning to open this weekend (similar drive time as Ischgl).

@Markymark29,
With respect. That link is snowfall be it very minimal is at 2800Metres (Valluga).
The way the lift company news release is worded (german version) they are not holding out much hope for opening on the 12th either.

I'm meant to be in Serfaus from the 20th so I've been looking at the cameras there. Can't believe they'll open this weekend, there's bug all snow except for up round Masner and I'm not sure how you'd get there if the rest of the place was green.

@scarbski,
A bit of advice. Off Piste can be very dangerous early
in the season & i find it hard to understand why off piste
outfits offer these tours so early.
When the big snow arrives, avalanche risk will be very high.
The ground is very warm this year. There is no early snowpack.
Rocks,streams etc will be hiding just beneath the surface of the fresh snow.

Good advice, thanks.
Hope local guides will keep us away from the worst ground but sure to be a ski ripper (at best)
Unfortunately the early week was my only real chance for a solo trip this year !

I don't find it hard to understand at all, they are just a business trying to make money. Ok the snow cover is often limited early season, but it's impossible to predict. Sometimes there is enough snow, sometimes there isn't. So they take bookings in advance, and then if there isn't enough snow then cancel them.
It is often possible to ski off-piste mid-Dec, it just means compromising on the variety of terrain etc. If you are implying that the touring companies compromise safety then that's a serious issue, I'd like to think that most if not all mountain guides do not do that. I would say it's more the quality/variety of skiing which is compromised.

Still trapped with this southern fohn. Farmer boys reckon it
will stay this way (no snow) until the fohn is blown out & they
say not before the weekend.
Arlberg gets its snow from the west.
Next update from the Lift Company Tuesday Dec 9th.

Yes - I have an 11 year old and can't even go to the Moose or KK anymore. We are coming to ski (or hike - much to his annoyance). We need snow by 17th!
We will have a hire car so we have a little bit of flexibility. I guess Lech/Zurs is a little higher. Any unknown high gems that we might be missing?

Yes. A bit more encourraging temperatures.
+1C in town 10.30am
-3.4C Gampen/ Galzig
Weather situation in evolving snow showers likely how much is not known yet
The Snow Cannons are on in St Anton, Lech & Zurs.
If it remains cold & the cannons going 24/7 the lift company should be able to get some runs open for next weekend.
