@rrd3718, you could also stay in Stuben which would be cheaper than Lech
|
Not true, Stuben is very expensive (and in my opinion too quiet and out on a limb, unless you go 4* hotel for some atmosphere which is an arm and a leg especially at 1.1€ to £1) however you can get great deals in Lech, we have always struggled to find reasonably priced accommodation in Stuben, its definitely not cheaper than St Anton even though you would think it would be - so have only been there once (and we had cabin fever).
If you want cheap then ime you go Klosterle, next village down and use the bus.

We've just booked the Hubertushof for 4 days in march and was cheaper than equivalent options in Obergurgl, Sölden and Lech. Granted it's not bargain bucket but stayed there years ago and was excellent- looking forward to getting the elevator down to the piste

@Markymark29, agreed. Great place to have lunch (because it's off the beaten track) but wouldn't like to stay there (because it's off the beaten track).

Not true.
That is not my experience. Was vastly cheaper staying in Stuben even when compared to some self catering places. This was a "package" with 2 adults, 2 kids that included 2 free adult lift passes.

Packages with skipasses included are available in all resorts, but typically only in low season.
Stuben is small and has limited choice. Lech and St.Anton might be more expensive on average, but still offer more choice at the lower end
Moreover: since last season Stuben is in the midst of it all, with the new Flexenbahn. Steep price rising is reported already.

Amazing 10 days in Arlberg and over around Warth/ Lech, mountainbiking and hiking, weather fantastic. The snow-making works in Warth are very impressive, helicopters dropping off pumping station construction gear at height above Puenchhutte.
Loads of hotels being newly built and renovated, particularly around Nasserein.

I remember when you could ascend the Galzigbahn and look down valley "Stanzertal" and clearly/distinctly point out each hamlet/village.
That is rapidly disappearing especially over the last 10 years & will soon be just one large conurbation.
I have actually heard talk about a transit system (Gondola or Seefaus style Metro) to link as far down as Flirsch.

Just booked up for a week from 6th of Jan at the Schwartz Adler, stayed there for a long weekend back about 8 years ago, seems to have had an indoor/outdoor pool added since then.

Impressive. But it does seem to somewhat industrialise the mountain landscape in a way that the former cable car stations did not ?

I agree about Stuben
Whilst I love going there to ski and having lunch there sometimes it's way too isolated for me to stay there.
I didn't really like staying in St Christoph once either, I much prefer staying in St Anton itself so I shall be back there in Feb staying on the Dorfstrasse again.

Meant to post previously but forgot - was at the St Anton Filmfest two weeks ago and watched the premier of the short film by Hanno Mackowitz titled STRUKTUR, it features local Lech based Freeride World Champion Lorraine Huber skiing all around the Arlberg, highlights for me were the big lines she was doing down Star Wars (we were actually there the day they filmed it and were skiing the same lines above Stuben, but not as good as her it has to be said), and the stuff over in Zurs (including some great shots around and on the new lift station roof over Flexenpassbahn). As usual with his movies very moody and captures the terrain/ lines/ light etc and shows her skills off brilliantly, fantastic short movie. Also if you haven't seen it watch her/ his 2013 movie titled Lorraine (on Vimeo), also fantastic Arlberg skiing, much in slo-mo.
