Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@Ryunis, yes, you have it, quite a useful shortcut when leaving Courchevel 1650, especially on the very snowy week we had when the picture was taken, saved going high and into the murk

Claud B -thanks for all your posts it’s a difficult year not being able to come down there . On the subject of a jandri replacement ,400 people an hour doesn’t sound like much . Do you know how many the current jandri does? I read as being to do with a third lift section for La Grave. I'm sure Claude B will confirm or refute this shortly
You know it makes sense.

@stevew, There are other ways, but you can put your photo on https://imgur.com then copy the link (top right corner of your photo) and put it on here with .jpg added and Tah, was struggling to remember how people were doing it now. My photo would never have been as exciting as yours though!

Italy is one of the poorest countries in the developed world. Tosh. Some Italians are poor by the standards of neighbouring European countries but there are two parallel economies operating in Italy - the official one and the enormous black one. Combined they are very far from poor but the wealth isn't distributed very well and the Government is starved of lots of tax revenue by that black economy. If you go down to mob-run cities like Naples you'll see poverty but the north is prosperous and although tourism is important, it ain't half as vital as manufacturing and food production. The ski resorts and hotels will still all be there whenever we're allowed back. Once got told off for referring to the black economy, it's non-PC, even though many still use the term as do I, the preferred PC term is informal economy. This really annoys me as it infers that it's legitimate, which clealry most of the black economy is not.

@halfhand, I read this this morning in hardcopy and got very annoyed at the poor reporting. Accoording to the Guardian Avoriaz is only accessed by a cable car ..... there's a road and it's a gondola! I know this was a soft wooly piece for the weeken supplement but it really gets my goat when I see things ill reported like this ... you have to ask what else do they misrepresent if you aren't half in the know. Sorry for the thread drift.

There's also Another World, between Bradford and Halifax, near Ogden Resevoir that has a coupole of rope tows, lots of really old skis, very small but fantastic views of the South Pennine. Probably 6 years since I've skied there.

@Peter S, Count in White Rose Ski Club and Yorkshire Ski Club having Briton Lifts at Kilnsley/Windy Ridge near Grassington. Also used to set the lift up at Dob Park outside of Otley. I was a member of White Rose Ski Club for a while and used the tow once in Roundhay Park. Does the lcub still exist and are there any (ex)members on here?

I once got stuck in a partly buried bush. Off-piste by myself, skis hooked under a branch and I came to a rest with feet upslope of my head, both skis stuck in the bush. I was unable to reach my bindings and as it was snowing heavily began to think I'd soon be covered by large, wet snowflakes. Still gives me nightmares. Ditto both in a bush and in a big pile of snow just off piste in Lech, I'd missed the piste because of bad light near the end of the day, could see a bar, hardly anyone about, but couldn't get out until a friendly boarder came and helped me. I could easily have been there all night

Some years ago BASI L3s were offered free Cairngorm season passes. The Mayrhofen story shows what a real ski resort does. They pulled out a lift that was only 20 years old, but no longer fit for purpose, and built the Penkenbahn. Topic drift warning. Why did they do this. I've only ever been to Mayerhofen once, in the year the old new lift opened 1996 I think and was really surprised to see that it had been replaced so quickly. My main memory of it was it turning a corner over the mid mountain peak at full speed with no midstation. Any idea why it was changed? I had a look at this. The previous lift had two cables only and required a direction change at the first pylon. Also, the safety built in was a big improvement. Management of childrens' groups is another. The direction change is done on a new first pylon using a 50m section of "Haul-Rope Saddles". There is new safety built in such that cabins can be wound down in case of breakdown stoppage. Childrens groups have their own loading arrangements. https://en.isr.at/singleview-en-old/article/world-first-for-mayrhofen From the great link New benchmark for the quality of the ride In order to achieve the smoothest possible ride on the 3S Penkenbahn, Doppelmayr designed long rope saddles (approx. 50 meters in length). As a consequence, passengers only realize that the cabin is negotiating a curve when their line of sight changes. “The 3S angle tower in Mayrhofen underlines once again our potential for innovation with tricable systems. In terms of the quality of the ride, attractiveness and safety, we actually managed to exceed our customer’s expectations,” adds a satisfied Peter Luger. On the old one the first thing you noticed going round the bend was the huge clatter and sway!

Just renewed passport just in case I can ski this season. You will need to be conscious of new rules on 6 months needed from 10 years from issue, not expiry! My passport turned up today, 2 weeks on the dot. Nice new black passport for those exercised by such things. More interestingly the date of expiry is 04/11/30 no carry over days anymore for early renewal.
