Hi all, I've just booked a last minute solo trip to Les Deux Alps flying from Manchester to Grenoble. Jet2 just dropped the price from over £100 to £63 for anyone interested. Transfers and accommodation was another £180 in total so pretty cheap for the time of year. Pm me if you like the sound of it and I will drop you the details or if your already in resort next week drop me a line if you fancy a ski or a beer. I'm M 55 fairly advanced but happy to ski and drink with just about anyone. :po: :tw:

We're on the other side of the Vanoise express in Vallandry that week. 4 of us ranging from lower intermediate to advanced. Got the full Paradiski pass so will deffo be heading over to La Plagne. Stayed in the Backgammon a couple of years ago and liked it a lot. Ski in ski out Vis the back door of the locker room and big appartments particularly for French standards.

Hi all. I'm looking to repeat my annual road trip to the French Alps and need some company to lighten the costs. Done this several times last few years to La Plagne / Les Arc, 3 valleys, Valloire, Valfrejus, Alp Dhez etc as and it usually costs under £600 each all in inclusive of lift pass with 4 of us in the car. Can manage up to 4 of us in the car with a roof box on there is just enough room for general luggage and ski gear as long as your not looking to take more than 1 pair of skis each. The more there are the cheaper both the transport and accomodation costs will be but if it was just 2 of us I still expect to manage it for around £750 and obviously more room in the car for gear. Exact location is open to negotiation ,(Usually ends up being French Alps and more often than not Mauriene valley area) it's definitely going to be self catering to keep the cost down. Traveling on Friday 3rd Jan to Dover from the north west and happy to pick up anywhere reasonable on the way or meet at Dover. Everything else is open to discussion apart from the dates as im a shift worker so its got to be that week. I'm a fairly advanced skier (Now in my 50's but in my head im still 25!) but happy to ski with all abilities on or off piste. Over several road trips i have had the pleasure to meet some extremely friendly and interesting people through Snowheads and cant wait to do it all again so get in touch if your interested. More than happy to tag along on someone elses trip if its on these dates so drop me a line.

Hi again, I can confirm its definitely going to be a trip to Orelle to ski the 3 valleys next year. Still just the 2 of us committed to this so far but for anyone who is looking at this and saying you cant possibly do it for that price and that it looks too good to be true i can now tell you why! The other Gentleman going with me owns an apartment in Orelle and has just confirmed its available for the week pretty much free of charge. Obviously any tourist taxes due, fees for bedding, cleaning etc would be payable but in a very generous gesture he has waived his fee for the week.
You know it makes sense.

Hi all, Just a quick update for anyone watching this thread and thinking is this the right trip for me! Its looking like we may ski the 3 valleys and base ourselves around Orelle. As this wouldnt be ski in ski out we would really need to stick together as a group when skiing pretty much throughout so ideally looking for upper intermediate to advanced skiers. Should still be able to do this on a reasonable budget even to the 3 valleys on a full area pass. Currently 2 of us & pricing this up its going to be between £725 - £775 each all in with the full area lift pass for 7 days. If there are 3 of us its £600 -£630 and with 4 its £550 -£575.
Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:

Hi @Mossity, no problems picking up on the south coast, picked up in Whitstable last trip. Personally spent a good amount of time in Valloire over the years and know the place very well. Currently thinking it's maybe best to leave exactly where to go til close to departure to see where the snow lands and try and get the last minute discounts like we did last year. Took a good £100 each off the price and we ended up in an 8 berth luxury apartment instead of a shoe box which was super impressive for self catering in France. PM me and we can exchange phone numbers and see if this sounds like it will work for you. :po: :tw:

Hi @kiteman69, for info I have a VW Touran which is a 7 seater but obviously the rear 2 need to be down to get enough boot space. Stick a full length roof box on and it's just about enough space to get 4 people's kit onboard as well as a few provisions we normally pick up at the local hypermarket on the Saturday morning before heading up the hill. I usually put at least 1 extra person on my insurance to share the drive although last year I did the whole trip down myself as I was feeling fine all night. Glad I did as I wasn't so wide awake on the way home. I know it sounds a bit hard core to drive all night and then go skiing but it gives you that extra day and lets you get your ski legs back on without loosing a full days skiing and with a long lunch and early finish with a few beers / glasses of red it's always been worth the hard push overnight in my opinion.

Hi @P2248derry, not 100% sure how it would work getting you to Geneva on the Friday but certainly worth looking at. Location wise it's probably going to be a toss up between Les sybelles, paradiski, valloire, alp dhuez, or somewhere similar. Kind of depends on how many of us are going and what budget were comfortable with.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@cardweg, I spent quite a bit of time in the mid 90's in Valloire the first couple of weeks in January and didn't go back for 20 years but nothing much had changed in the village. Same bubble car up the Setaz but some much better and faster chair lifts on the mountain and slight extensions to the ski area in both Valloire and Valmeinier.
And post your own questions...

I have 164 skis and usually pack boots in my case but probably better to pack them separately and use a smaller case. Hi Richdl 164 will fit down the middle of the car easily and separate boots and smaller bags make for a more fun game of Tetris packing it all in. Would prefer not to have to put a roof box on if I don't have to if only for the fuel economy side of it.

So... resort choice... I'm heading out on a similar trip the previous week and trying to work out where to go. Valloire, or rather Valmeinier, seems to be ticking a lot of boxes for us. It's reasonably sized, reasonably high (Valmeinier at 1800m) and reasonably close to GVA (~2hrs drive). I was wondering if you have any thoughts as to where to stay? As I read the piste map, there only seems to be one, seemingly rather low, lift that gets you between the two areas. Hi I have skied that area for several weeks both from the Valloire and Valmeinier side. I have been as late as the second week in April on a year with very little snow and the link has remained open between the two always. Have stayed in Les hautes de Valmeinier right at the top of The village the last 2 or 3 times and it's very much ski in ski out. Typical small but functional self catering accomodation as you would expect in France but the skiing has always been excellent and the prices super cheap on snowtrex and sunweb. Might well end up there again this year yet myself as if none of the really big resorts come down in price it's by far the best budget ski resort on the market in my humble opinion and not usually over run by Brits.
And they're a friendly bunch.

I usually take at least 2 or 3 pairs so if you have your own boots you can use a pair of mine on the Saturday. I think all of my usual ski's have rail bindings so pretty adjustable to different size ski boots. I was bit of an eBay ski hoarder a few years ago and still have some I've never even tried out yet !!!
You know it makes sense.

Yes that sounds fairly sensible and we all set off together from Whitstable. Just out of interest how much gear are people expecting to bring especially ski's as I can fit a huge amount in with 3 of us but not as much if it's 4. The length of your ski's as well if you know off the top of your heads as anything over 180's might mean getting a roof box for on top as they won't fit inside at an angle with 4 of us.
Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:

Just to flesh out the very lose original plan. I usually leave on a Friday afternoon from "up north" heading for Dover and pick up anyone vaguely on the way to Dover. I try and get on a ferry that lands in France about midnight so exiting Dover anywhere 9-10pm and then it's an all night drive to resort which might sound a bit hard core but it's manageable even if I'm the only driver. In resort anywhere between 7:30 to 9:00 am and straight on the slopes for the day. Bit of a slide, lunch, and a beer or 2 then a gentle slide back to resort. Check in to accomodation and sleep. I don't usually ski on the following Saturday although it is possible but I usually don't fancy the drive home after a full day on the slopes but both our arrival and departure are negotiable especially if someone else fancies taking on some of the driving. Usually get the ferry home around 18:00 so back in the UK about 18:30 and toddle off home. The extra day ski pass on a Saturday isn't included in the package price but pick the right resort and Saturday passes are 1/2 the price of any other day so it's well worth doing. As I say that's my usual plan but I'm open to negotiation if it sounds a bit extreme and is a deal breaker.

I'm 53 and not always so fit and active but can usually still get around the slopes for a week although I suffer for it when I get home. Happy to ski as a group or have some solo time whatever suits. Had another snowhead with me and my son last year who was well in his 60's and we stuck together all week no problems. I'm sure we can all be young at heart but for me it's mostly the ski and not the apre I'm going for although don't get me wrong I like a beer and the red wine even more :po:

No last year was with sunweb but I have used snowtrex more than once and they are both super cheap and in my experience very reliable. You get exactly what they advertise which at times seems too good to be true for the money. Alp dhuez is coming down in price slightly and I saw one in la plage yesterday for under £300 if there were 3 of us but the accomodation would be a little snug. I've been to valloire and valmeinier quite a few times and it's a really nice area with a decent variety of slopes and the prices are very reasonable at the moment so plenty of options and you don't have to pull the trigger till very close to the date so plenty of time yet. It's going to be about £600 for transport split between however many travel plus the accom and lift pass so even with only 2 it's possible for under £500 each unless you want to go to massive resort. If we get 3 of us then anywhere is possible!

I work shifts and can only manage to get away either W/C 25th or 1st April and would prefer to avoid school holidays so 25th works best for me. Currently the places with plenty of availability and therefore discounts look to be Grand Domain, Valloire & Valmeinier, Les Sybelles which are all around the Haute Savoire region so nice and easy to get to. Might find some other areas drop in price as we get closer to the date.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@supasap, Hi I've done the driving thing a number of times and although it's getting more expensive due to fuel costs etc I can assure you it's easily doable for under £650 each with 2 people. Might even squeeze it down to £500 as there are some super good discounts online at the moment such as avcom and lift pass in the grand Domain for £119 each. That's amazing as that's with a 6 day pass that should cost £216 on its own! Had a couple of other tentative enquiries so if there's 3 of us it gets even cheaper

Me (52) and my son (19) both decent skiers are looking to go on a relatively cheap road trip to either Le Corbier or Valmeinier departing Blackburn on the afternoon of 8th April. I will be driving a 7 seater VW touran so room in the back for at least 1 or 2 more with full kit if anyone is up for it. Price is circa £400 -£500 each for transport, accomodation and lift pass depending on how many of us end up going. Happy to pay a bit extra for a larger apartment if people want their own sleeping space and reasonably flexible on picking up on the way down south as long as it's not miles off route to Dover. Nothing booked yet as this is all still in the planning stage so PM me if your interested and we can make some firm plans.
