Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Could just be an epic winter for the locals. I think Stanton is right, they won't open the ski lifts for just a few locals, they'd do better to shutter the resorts. We've seen that over here in the UK, easier to shut down the whole pub & claim the allowances then stay open and lose money.

@Haggis_Trap, did you ski at Glencoe on 12th/13th March??? Think most of the tracks here are mine doing laps :) This was a classic example of a gamble, forecast was wind/rain/snow clearing on 12th March but bluebird on the 13th. I drove to Perth on the 11th so I was within striking distance of Glenshee or Glencoe (and Perth has a Brewdog bar for sustenance!!) 12th forecast/websites showed Glenshee open, Glencoe shut but hoping to open. I set off for Glenshee then turned around and headed back to Glencoe on a huge gamble. Ended up sitting in the Glencoe car park for 2 hours in the rain/wind, until they opened. Got up and only the plateau lifts were open, plenty of fresh snow around. Then I saw them running the Wall T Bar, so headed over and was first in the q whist the lifty when up and skied down. Shared the first T bar up with a telemarker and was second into the Wall in fresh light powder!! Spent 4 hours lapping and getting fresh tracks! Next day dawned bright and sunny, place was mobbed, maybe queued 2 hours in the car park to get up the Access chairlift but then had a great day, still finding fresh tracks at 3pm! Pic from the 12th and video from the 13th. http://snowmediazone.com/the_zone/data/500/medium/68FF5F17-C507-494A-A02B-22A1E954AAF9.jpeg https://youtu.be/Ov5_NjiSDTc

Just noticed this on Weardale Twitter: Weardale Ski Club have decided not to allow day passes this season to ensure we can control numbers. This means you will need to be a member to ski. There are still some places available. Reciprocal arrangements with Raise, Yad Moss and Allenheads continue but only on weekdays
Then you'll get to see more forums.

Does anyone know of the current situation regarding Covid rules and skiing in Scotland? Would it be more possible to do now than it was in April and May (i.e. when it was not possible at all!)? Thanks. N Neige The current situation with skiing in Scotland is that there isn't any! :-P I think the main problem as I see it is zones that in the new "very high" are advised not to travel in/out

@Markymark29yeah I could ski fine on 100mm but I'd always be wanting a thinner ski for a piste day. Hard icy pistes when there hasn't been much snow for a week or wind has blown the fresh off the last thing I'd want to be on is a wide ski, especially as the OP is an intermediate out for the season. They could have days/weeks without fresh snow. I've taken 98mm skis back to the car at lunchtime and swopped to 76mm and had loads more fun, even on off piste with 10cm fresh. Same for hard/icy moguls outside of powder/slush. More power, more responsive, better edge control, higher speeds, more stability I'll get on a 78mm piste ski vs a 100+ softer OP ski. As you say every ski is a compromise, the OP is out for the season so I'd still say a 2 ski quiver will be 100% more fun than either just a <80mm>100mm ski
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

So I want something light, maneuverable, but good at speed on piste, good flotation but with some carving capabilities? does that even exist? Cheers. So I hate to be the one but good at speed on piste with piste carving for an intermediate skier ain't a ski over 100mm in width!! IMHO I'd get something mid 80s which you'll use 60%-80% of the time in Europe, then rent >100mm for the occasional really deep powder days/spring slush. Especially as you are out for the season. Or buy two sets of skis!

This ski school thing for young kids is going to be a logistical nightmare and imo will not work. At break times and lunch time they get together and cram into self-service restaurants on the hill and there's often 100's all running around together, and the ski instructors all stand about whilst havoc ensues, how is that going to work? "just" by staggering times, choosing different restaurants can easily see it being workable.

@BobinCH, yep looking pretty good. Details vary from model to model of course, but shaping up for a decent early fall! Always nice to get some cheeky skiing in in September. And of course this locks in a decent season... ;) every year I think I must note down the "first decent non glacial snowfall", the date when it all melts, and when the first snow that hangs around falls!

@davidthornton, Apres ski as it was previously won't exist IMHO, it's not off, it will be different. Maybe more like what the English pubs I've been to have done, outside only, max groups of 6 who are in a household on one table, service to the table, no live music etc et

@DB, What model is your tacx trainer? @boarder2020, are you a coach or trainer in any of this stuff? You seem very knowledgeable! It‘s a tacx flow (not smart), must be around 15 to 20 years old but has had very little use. Looks like this. https://images.app.goo.gl/24jWcXA6Gho93pbu7 Sadly that won’t be working with any modern apps or your Garmin watch. But if your didn’t want to get to analytical I believe most platforms support guesstimated power vis cadence if you wanted to buy a cadence sensor and see how you got on? Just be aware you’ll get an inflated power number which is good for ego!!
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I've read alot about MAF, seems you have to stick at it and not let the HR go over the top end limit to get the adaptations. I did it post my heart procedures, often having to walk whilst trying to run. Oct-Dec could you run outside? easy to do and doesn't really need much kit apart from decent trainers?? or get a turbo trainer and get Zwift??

If you are Egan Bernal, or at least his coach, this may be interesting but you are not about to be signed by Ineos Grenadiers so it is just more meaningless numberwang to pour over. I wouldn't say it was meaningless data, the engineering nerd in me likes to see the data. If they cost around €200 I might have even considered them but as the least expensive is around €500, forget that. Some are nearer €1000, who buys these - Hotel owners in Lech? Folk who are serious about training, wanting to win races, get into triathlon Age Group qualifications etc. The cheapest single sided pedals I know about are £449 https://www.sigmasports.com/brand/favero Cheapest power meter I know about is the Stages crank arm at £299 https://www.sigmasports.com/item/Stages-Cycling/G3-Power-L-Shimano-105-R7000-Power-Meter/LQIV

Or you train to power, have a quick glance to see if you hit the numbers you wanted to in the intervals, and adjust your next ride/your goals as appropriate.

@DB, what kind of cross trainer are you looking at? Key question is does it broadcast power over ant+ or Bluetooth? Do you any of your activities into something like Strava? If so I think a free and excellent tool intervals.icu should show progression etc. I’m not sure if it works on just HR data though.
And post your own questions...

@DB, define "exercise machine" I've had power data from a Kickr smart trainer to my 935 and 945 watch as well as my power pedals. Any "modern" smart trainer broadcasting ant+ or Bluetooth will get picked up by your watch, fed into connect and be able to be analysed. That is pretty much taken as given nowadays for modern Garmin watches. That's the point of the standards, smart trainers, smart treadmills broadcast a standard, the Garmin (or other devices) pick it up. You don't need the USB stick unless you want to run smart "apps" on a desktop to train by power, ie Zwift. https://zwift.com/get-zwifting

Is it possible to link up the power output of smart exercise machines to Garmin while training - anyone done this? yes, depending on what watch you have and what protocol the smart machines support! I can't remember what you bought, info here for the Fenix 6 https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/fenix66s6xpro/EN-US/GUID-0AA57B88-BA13-4983-ADAC-7EA7DABC735D.html#:~:text=The%20first%20time%20you%20connect,pair%20the%20device%20and%20sensor.&text=away%20from%20other%20wireless%20sensors,Sensors%20%26%20Accessories%20%3E%20Add%20New.
