Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Awesome display from @Chris_n and his colleagues here in Niederau tonight, I've skied all the big places but I'm falling in love with this little one!! Well done all!

@andyrew, isn't the return journey not a little pedestrian? But very pretty and can be done quite "quickly". After nearly 40 years skiing it's these places that really make a trip for me. Also love the "back route" into morzine.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name.

I see the cheapest you could do with, say, crystal would be over £700 (looking 9th/16th March). I would have said - book a titchy apartment through lesmenuires.com - you can get quite a few things for less then 450 Euro and get a car from Geneva airport (under £200 from Autoeurope). You don't say where you are, but looking at flight prices on Easyjet, (for both stansted and Edinburgh as examples) they're eyewateringly expensive at the moment. Typically £300 return before you start adding bags! Actually I just checked Edinburgh to Lyon and that you could get for £150 return. So it looks at a glance like - self propelling you'd be about the same price as a bargain basement from Crystal but going to a much better place than they'd take you to. What about something like UCPA?

You absolutely have to go up Ripaille in Les Crosets and head off left on Grand Paradis down to Champery and stop for a beer at the second restaurant that you come to - you'll know you're at the right one when you lose the power of speech at the view.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

the problem with the lecht and glenshee is the complete lack of public transport. There are always plenty of coaches in the car park but I'm not sure how you get to ride on one. I don't usually mind the hours drive :-D

A good overview of the current situation in Tirol from LWD Tirol. https://avalanche.report/albina-web/blog/avalanche-warning-service-tirol.blogspot.com/2904881366578868024?lang=en I've been following this: [url= http://liveblog.tt.com/live/winter-in-tirol ] from tiroler tageszeitung which gives quite an insight into what's going on!

So I'm here in Crans Montana, New Years week, and the lift queue's are horrendous. The fundamental problem was the "location" one. I skied 3V (based in Les Menuires) Christmas week, and then Les Arcs on sunday, Valmorel and St Francois New years eve and Espace Diamante New years day and we hardly saw a soul anywhere. Maximum queue was 5 minutes when we hit one of the 3V main links around 4pm once. Just saying.
You know it makes sense.

Hi @Chris_n, A few days ago you said "Snow at Auffach was very good, all of the extra pistes that aren't on the map are open", I'm intrigued by that! Are there "pistes" that are extra to the map (I have the ski Juwel map in front of me)? I'll be a first time visitor to Niederau from 2nd February and am very much looking forward to it. I spend a lot of my skiing time in France and have only skied Zillertal (several times) and Kitzbuhel (once, many years ago) in Austria. I very much enjoyed the Zillertal ambience!

I have not but agree it is not obvious, the bus is every 20 minutes is the solution. Nah! If I wanted to commute I'd go to Austria :-D The whole point of Les Menuires is the time between bed and skis and skis and a beer in the apartment is tending to zero. There's plenty of other choice.

While I've stayed in all the other areas of the Les Menuires area, I've never stayed in an apartment in the Les Fontanettes area. That includes blocks such as Astragale, Argousier and Asters etc. What's put me off is that I've never been able to work out how difficult it is to get onto or off the skiing. One of the big advantages of everywhere else is that you clip into your skis at the door and ski off but I can't see how you can access anything easily from Fontanettes without walking. Has anyone used any of these blocks? Any advice?

Interested in this thread. Arriving in Grenoble on the 4th March and thinking a hire car works out better? A hire car always works out better IMHO, I do it 3 times per season. It also gives you the option to do Saturday to (week on) Sunday flights so you get 7 full days skiing. When we do the march trip to the PDS we also manage to be skiing in St Jean d'aulpe by midday on the first saturday before relocating, hence 8 days skiing in a week trip. What's not to like.

Rent a car. £280 for an economy from Geneva airport for the week - takes 2 plus skis. Free parking in La Tania The bonus is that you get to do your shopping for the week in the supermarket in Moutiers - we were living off 4.99 euro bottles of Champagne all christmas

If you don't use an airline because you have had delayed skis you would probably have to travel by ferry. BA is the only airline that 'misplaced mine' twice! Oh I use an airline alright - Easyjet - 3 times per year for ski trips, Flawless.

I agree with all the comments above, in fact when I saw the chaos at Turin I grabbed a pad and wrote out extra phone and postcode labels to put in the bags, some kind of sixth sense... I wish I'd written mobile numbers in inedible pen on the outside of the bags. Like most folks I've suffered missing skis before, it's why we don't use Jet 2 any more. But they were much less incompetent than Crystal, but of course they cross the Ts, dot the Is and then ram something very sharp and unpleasant up the middle. Never again.
And post your own questions...

Well, It's now 5 days and I've heard from 3 people on Twitter today. All 3 had a courier trying to deliver them a bag that wasn't theirs... I've started a google group CrystalBY1713 https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/crystalby1713 to share information and if need be act as a platform to organise legal action. Please pass this on to anyone you know who might have been on that flight if they want to correspond. The flight was BY1713 Turin to Glasgow on 4th Feb.

Just thought I'd update you all after 5 days still no sight or sound of our skis from sundays flight. Crystal just keep bleating about how difficult it is for them, on Twitter, because there are so many skis (we managed to get out of them on the phone that it was 120 bags). They claim they're repatriating them to Glasgow as space becomes available on flights - I'd love to know how they're doing this as there are no flights to Glasgow from Turin except on sundays. We did hear from the handlers Menzies that some were coming through Gatwick but we've not heard of anyone getting skis. On Twitter they keeps saying they'll provide information - but never do. They have not responded to any of the emails I have sent to their various "customer services" (sic) addresses. On the phone a friend was told that there were still 70 bags in a warehouse in Turin and they had "booked" space on their own flight back on Sunday for them... "We dot the Ts, cross the Is and put you in the middle"... My a*se.
You know it makes sense.

At least it was on the return. They will have to deliver them to you and you are saved the hassle of lugging them home. Result! Were they my 2013 Magnums in the bag that had had some 200 ski days and 4000+ km out of them I might feel similarly. I am rather more anxious about a brand new pair with 6 days on them... As regards insurance if it had to go there, what with excess etc, you always end up out of pocket

Turin airport seemed to be in complete and utter chaos this morning with what seemed like every section of the check-in infrastructure failed. On arrival back at Glasgow off BY1713 (TUI) at least a hundred sets of skis did not appear including my brand new Magnums. Menzies PIR registration was also chaos,. Phoned Crystal who deny any responsibility and say I have to contact TUI who seem to have no means of contact. There seems to be no way to find out where our skis are and what is happening. Is anybody else flying to other UK airports caught up in this fiasco?

It’s amazing how the weather forecasts vary between resorts that As the crow flies are not that far apart. I’m watching forecasts for this years trip to la clusaz who have faired pretty well so far yet not that far away Val D’ Is getting dumped on again yet nothing much for La Clusaz. We skied la rosiere last new years day having looked over from les Arcs and seen that the snowline looked a bit lower, albeit still mainly ribbons of artificial piste between fields of grass. As we crossed the ridge to La Thuile, everything became white. La Thuile had fantastic wide snow cover, La Rosiere had none.

I once did a couple of hours with the legendary Henri Giraud in his DR400 F-BOPT doing landings there, nice to have his signature in my logbook. For the first half hour we had two passengers - a couple of English ladies out for a pleasure flight. I wonder to this day quite what they made of me being instructed on my first approach and landing at an altiport in snow.. "Plus Moteur... PLUS MOTEUR..."

Needs to stand up taller, introduce more dynamism and use a more positive pole plant. A-, can do better Actually, his anterior mesial arc is interfected by the oblique commulated thrust principally to that of his left side at around 40% of his turn. His right side suffers by only 25% or so. You see this consistently. This is throwing his protuberal axis off and therefore preventing him from better, or more fully engaging his upper throxicallic muscle group which distributes anflictor pexlar and grulapitary stability. But can he get to the restaurant in time for lunch?
