Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Avoriaz. Only Parisians do the silent Z, locals pronounce it. @Hurtle, is quite right. Close. But no cigar. Mid or long French words of French origin with a penultimate vowel spoken by official French (and Savoyards) always have a silent "z" and "x". Nobody skis in Chamoneex. Have a free French lesson ;-) https://www.ledauphine.com/haute-savoie/2019/07/25/faut-il-prononcer-les-x-et-les-z-a-la-fin-des-noms-des-communes

Avoriaz is also wrong AFAIK. The final ‘z’ is silent, so it should be “Av-or-ee-a” and it’s doesn’t start with an “Arrrr”. Val Thorens should be “Val torr-on” not Val tor - en”Nope, Avoriazz and Val Torr-ance. Yup. Silent "z" in Avoriaz. https://forvo.com/word/avoriaz/#fr https://forvo.com/word/val_thorens/#fr

China plague is the most infectious new disease the world has seen in living memory. It has caused half the entire world of humanity to lockdown and shutdown. Without hard lockdown, infections would now be approaching 1 billion and deaths 10 million -- outstripping even WW2's daily deathrate. Do not confuse post-lockdown stats with pre-lockdown uncontrolled wildfire spread. The plague numbers only look "good" because the world is in hibernation... What's more, the plague is not just about death. It is also about disability. Post-virus fatigue and disability are real. Perhaps as high as 5-20% of confirmed cases. If your lungs or heart get wrecked by Wuhan Flu, you ain't gonna be skiing 8hrs a day.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Always carry 3 masks. On and off the slopes. Morning, day, and night. One to wear. One in case a strap breaks. One in case it gets lost. The death plague has not gone away.

My friend's TO has now folded so it's now an ATOL claim which will be slow but relatively hassle free. I've looked at the TO's last filed accounts (y.e. October 2018) and they made a profit of just under £7 per passenger on a selling price of £562. . . . . . . The travel industry is one of the most overcrowded, oversupplied industries in the world. Anybody with a laptop, phone, minivan, and rented room can set themselves up as a travel company. Takes about a week to setup. Zero barriers to entry (or exit). They make no profit in the upswing. And thousands of firms will go pop in the downswing.

The world produces 90,000 tons of CO2 every 80 seconds... Skis are an insignificant 0.0002% of world emissions. A tiny pinprick in a minuscule drop in a mega bucket.

Accommodation price looks a rip. Chamonix is low and getting smashed by global boiling and now rarely gets snow in town. You'll spend the season surrounded by slushy brown concrete. No white winter wonderland, like the travel brochures. When a 2nd wave of death plague sweeps Europe, resorts and lifts will shut faster than you can count to ten. Your 12k will go up in smoke.
Then you'll get to see more forums.

Sustainable skis are just another green gimmick that will make pretty much zero difference to the planet. Recycle, refurb, and resell are probably the lowhanging fruit. Open highprofile tradein stores (or popup booths) in ski resorts, where you can get $100 for your old skis, and immediately put the cash toward a new pair of $1,000 skis. Make it easier to trade "old for new".

Sad news. Great website. Looks like advertising revenue dried up, due to the plague. Worth noting, you can still access ~20 years of historical pages from their website, from 2000 to 2020, via Wayback. Some excellent resort info. https://web.archive.org/web/20000801000000*/onthesnow.com

Most important thing in a snowdome, by far, is to wear a tight mask. Wear gloves. Never touch face. Lots of puffing and panting and spit flying everywhere in the air and on lifts.

Scotland had a real glacier, around 4000ft, up until the 1700s. Global warming melted it. There is a (tiny) permanent snowfield left today in central Scotland, called The Sphinx, in the Cairngorms. Some July 2020 skiing pix, at Ben Nevis, in the Scotland thread [url=https://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?p=4617430#4617430]here.

Book lastminute. As the global ski industry collapses, travel firms will be giving stuff away practically for free. Any 2nd wave of plague in winter 2021 will kill prebooked vacations. Recent research suggests European and North American vacation prices today are already down 10-20% on last summer. Prices are tumbling.

You cannot use the UK NHS for extrapolating C19 infection rates in the wider world. UK hospitals are among the uncleanest and least-protected in the entire developed world and like a blackhole of plague death. Even worse than Italy. Some recent estimates suggest UK hospitals have madeup ~3% of the UK population, but ~50% of all deadly C19 spread!

@Whitegold, I’ll address this directly to you so others can see it too. For a variety of reasons I’m pretty keen not to have people spoiling this thread. I don’t really know what motivates you, but could I politely request that we leave discussion of viruses to the multitude of other threads there are on this forum where people want to discuss that? There are plenty for you to do that on. This is not the one. This is for discussion of the weather. The thread title explains that and normally that’s quite a good clue about what the content of the thread is. Not always, but in this case it is. Would that be ok? You're out of touch, son. Sounds like controlfreak oppression by self-appointed, self-important forum police ;-) The world has changed. Whether you like it or not, the plague is now as big a risk for snowchasers as avalanches. Around ~50 people died from avalanches across the European Alps in 2019-20. Around ~500 people died from the plague across the European Alps in 2019-20. Plague is in the coaches to resort, the bars where you drink, the cablecars to the snowfall you promote. You cannot suppress what is now the deadliest threat to skiers in resorts chasing the snowfall. Deadlier than avalanche. There is already one quote for avalanche on this page. And nobody has oppressed the poster and controlfreaked them to put it in the Avalanche thread ;-)

Like grass, mud, rock, and sand skiing, road skiing totally sucks. Too slow and too much friction. Only way to make it worthwhile is to RedBull it and go steep. Straightline the world's steepest roads. https://i.cbc.ca/1.4978981.1547575434!/fileImage/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/original_780/world-s-steepest-street.jpg

Southern Munich. Or just to the south of the Munich "border". Plenty tech jobs. Intel, BMW, etc. Swisslike lifestyle. Drive to the mountains in an hour or two. But stay clear of living in central Munich. Deteriorating fast. Exiting Central Station feels now like a warzone.

Yes, Beirut is much more cosmopolitan and modern than most people would assume. Same is true of Iran which also has skiing and possibly even friendlier people. Unfortunately for most people these places are just thought of as some kind of dangerous warzones full of "death to the west" type people. One-fifth of all of habitable Lebanon is basically a warzone. One-fourth of Beirut is completely offlimits to Westerners (southern part). All of Tripoli is pretty much a nogo zone. Southern Lebanon is covered in landmines. Even the roads to and from Beirut Airport get blockaded by riots on a fairly regular basis. Lebanon is a cool country. One of the three "safest" in the Middle East. But don't pretend it's some kind of Med utopia. You gotta go there with eyes wide open. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5e7b3cc7e90e0706ecc69379/FCO_301_-_Lebanon_Travel_Advice_Ed21__WEB_.jpg

Good posts (despite it being middle of summer)... Lebanon's economy is currently on the brink of collapse. Assuming no civil war, Lebanon could be a very cheap ski vacation in 2021. A good alternative to (say) the smaller resorts of Austria or Italy. The Lebanese ski areas will slash prices to attract the middleclass with hard dollars (which the banking system badly needs).
