Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Sintered bases are made by pressurising 1000s of little pellets into a sheet and baking it, the microscopic gaps in that sheet act as pores for wax to melt into the base which acts like a reservoir. An extruded base, the pellets are melted into a liquid and squeezed out into a sheet then cut to shape, no pores, so wax just skims the surface and is worn away quickly. Same as why a ptex repair won't take wax the same way as the regular base on a sintered board or ski. I wouldn't say that sintered is harder than extruded though, it is inherently more prone to damage because of the way its made.

In the last queue to train now. Should be on the 1535 rather than the 1520 we were booked on, 2hr15m queue to get from the autoroute junction to here.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name.

Reckon it'll have taken us 8 hours to get from les Contamines to Troyes for our overnight stop
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Quite a lot of park boards are extruded. More hard-wearing than sintered and why bother with a fast wax-hungry base when you're going at relatively low speeds.

Well we do have the drive from les Contamines to Troyes to do tomorrow... And the wife does have Spotify. Maybe if the kids are being insufferable.

When the kids were younger, I convinced them that moguls were the tops of hibernating Marmottes, and that your average marmotte was about the size of a VW beetle (traditional, not new model).

Day playing in the snow in Les Contamines with a selection of visabilities. Had the kids with us and they've never experienced the whiteout we were getting at one point. Did get a bit sketchy for smallest as he is learning to snowboard at the moment so doesn't have the confidence to quite plough through... Pretty much stopped now, and temp is up to +3.

We are in La Contamines this week and it's been business as usual as far as we have seen. Queues are there, not much space in the public car parks to be seen...

@DrLawn, maybe you need to update to the new Wide Area Network KERS system... I think you can do that by yourself. Don't go for the Kinetic Network Integration Contol one though, gets in a right old twist.

We finally rolled into les Contamines about 5pm after setting off from the night halt just before 9am. Satnav was working on some crazy work around via Switzerland, but we stuck with the A40 and crept along, occasionally laughing at the VW Satnav pronunciation of Grenoble as Gre-nobbly. More annoying than anything is that because we were later arriving, all the parking at the accommodation is taken, so the wagon is 10 mins walk down the road... And @always29 has left her charging cable in it.

Also, why do beginner snowboarders stop behind rollers and are invisible??!!! Because they have misjudged stopping on the crest, or, more likely got the pitch wrong on the steeper side, panicked a bit and fallen on their transition turn, which to the uninitiated can look like sitting down sometimes. I'm sure they appreciated you slowing down to make sure they were ok, and your adherence to rule number 1. The one rule that, if it was followed by us all, would make all the others, and this whole thread, obsolete. Respect for others.

No, but are you there to police him for being a bit of a nob? Would you do the same if it wasn't your kid? Would you do the same if it wasn't a kid but a 100kg bloke he just missed? Now if you want to have a chat about piste patrols, and pulling people's lift tickets for reckless behaviour, different matter.

@rob@rar, its quite interesting (and I use the term quite wrongly) when down on the cat-tracks on a snowboard as you've not only got to keep your situational awareness about you for people coming past, but you are also plotting how the gradient will work for you keeping momentum up on long flats, how you can minimise the amount of turns to get past people moving slower and through the usual left/right movements and inevitable pole waving while making sure you're not running too flat a base to catch an edge. All the while you're doing this and maintaining a veneer of effortless steez befitting someone as totally peng as myself 8) .

I am very sorry you bought a mobile laughing stock on very large wheels. The current Land Rover range is about delivering road presence through chintz and armchairs to the Instagram generation. The new Defender is 3.7 TONS. The only way that's getting out of the mud on its paint on tyres is by sinking slowly to the bedrock and trundling out. I have got infinitely more time for the little Fiat's and Suzukis 4x4s than the tubs'o'lard Q, X, Cayenne etc hippo brigade.

@mgrolf, s'easy one, just lightly grab their pole at the top of the backswing and they'll pivot 90 degrees, works on bellends with large umbrellas too. Panicky skier-types who try to pole away from the lift, normally by trying to jam their pole into my board in the process
