Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Here is a list of the pistes here from the 88/89 piste map. Pretty standard fare with a few local names. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49941644712_250b17eb71_o.jpg And here is some of the "new" numbers that they introduced a few years ago. Many who've been around a few years still use the old names  https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49941647232_4b245593b6_c.jpg

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

We used to have pistes with quaint names here until about 10 years ago. Then CdA decided to "simplify" things. Now every piste is the name of the lift serving it followed by a number, the higher the number signifying the comparative difficulty; ie Bellecombe 1-8  Simples

One phrase I am hearing less and less is C'est la tournée du Patron! Might be cos I'm in a resort most of the time not sure if the tradition continues in the countryside. One particular bar here is very good for that. Every 4th beer or so. Inexpensive too even without locals prices.

Many years ago I went to Strasbourg for the Christmas Market and drank quite a bit of Kronenbourgs Bière de Noël that year. It was very strange, a strong lager but with the same spice flavourings as vin chaud

Leffe do a rose too. The french add anything to lager, peche seems to me the most disgusting but it's very popular. But how can you take anyone who drinks a galopin seriously

Much as I want to visit uk, I'm missing my daughter a lot haven't seen her since October, it will have to wait. I was hoping July would be possible, my parents come out of 14 weeks total lockdown on 1st July, that looks unlikely. I haven't got a home there now otherwise I might just do it. I think France is acting fairly tbh, happy to allow UK visitors without a period of isolation but just reciprocating UK actions, same with Spain.
Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:

But I hiked up to Lac du Lauvitel on Tuesday. First time out of 2 Alpes since 16th March. There were several cars in the car park and several people about on the hiking paths and by the lake. But not that many tbh. I'm hearing though that yesterday it was heaving. A fairly easy family hike with a great vista at the top so very popular. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49916209091_822dd7e4d1_c.jpg I need to do a raid on Decathlon. Thinking Briançon rather than braving Espace Comboire in Grenoble. Nicer drive too. Is it fairly quiet over there?

I was on a chairlift in late Feb I think with an American couple when one of them saw what she thought was a bear. Definitely something there in the snow moving about. I explained that it was a marmot or groundhog. I think it was actually an avi dog from the pisteurs hut just above  This one, Mousson. One of the pisteurs in the report is a friend and neighbour. https://www.sophierodriguez.fr/-/galleries/reportages/pisteurs?fbclid=IwAR1SByM2OD2Q6d5mKiT8P5SzxSvMUc06Ix8yBca06ZcceiNnyv_65cjegnw

In full spring mode now, mountains are full of beautiful flowers. This was taken on Vallée Blanche. I did find a few small patches of snow near the top, at about 2000m. Had a reasonable amount of rain recently, I'm not sure what the freezing point has been tbh. I think they're still hoping to open in the summer. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49877671741_7dd2f9b7f3_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49894335386_7131c080a0_c.jpg

I'm always in awe of the guy who rides a Skwal here in his late 70s. I've only ever seen one other. Like a monoski but with the bindings inline, the only way of stopping seems to be falling sideways. Up here a lot, he lives down in Bourg d'Oisans, I've had have several chats with him.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Well we've had boots and skis  Keep going until you drop I believe. My neighbour here, not a local, still skis in his mid 80s, After having both hips replaced last year. All pistes plus off piste too, not just pootling about on blues. I aspire to that. Now 61 I'm skiing about 75 days a season. I'm ok, didn't start until my 40s. But I believe I'm not deteriorating too much ;-)

Even liners differ. When I bought my current Heads Cedric here told me they'd last a lot longer than the Salomons I had before. He was right, they've done 400 days. OK they're shot as are the boots but not a total disaster.

Not too much point in people coming here, nothing much more will be open than now. A few hikers, etc I guess. One shop opening next week is CBD https://www.cbd.fr/ so I'll be able to get legal cannabis products  I'm thinking that July may be when I visit UK. My parents (very vulnerable) can't see anyone until then and as an asthmatic my daughter is quite nervous. I wonder whether France will slap a similar period on UK citizens entering, tit for tat.

So it's 100km á vol d'oiseau if travelling outside your own department or anywhere within your own department. Outside of those limits only for d’un motif professionnel ou familial impérieux. Quite a wide area really. There is an official tool for showing the 100km but it's over complicated and doesn't really work for me. It just generates a strange green blob on the map which is totally inaccurate. For me that's Annecy in the north, Sisteron in the South, Valence to the West and anywhere in the east. Enough scope to keep me amused.

I won't be rushing up regardless. Only way up to the glacier is via a 2 section 20 man gondola which suffers with big queues. Social distancing will be impossible. Bars and restaurants won't open until July at the earliest so hardly a holiday, ok though for teams race training who are the majority of summer visitors. Much nicer things to do imo, glacier skiing is pretty dull. Business owners and the resort in general need something badly though.
