One of the most important bits of skiing equipment is your clothing.

Ski clothing has a long history and has varied with technology and fashion.

So what must your clothing do for you?

  • Keep you warm
  • Keep you dry
  • Protect you
  • Not interfere with your skiing

At the moment, ski clothing tends to be viewed as a series of layers:

  • Inner Layer
  • Middle Layer
  • Outer Layer

These layers provide insulation and breathability.

The Inner Layer

This layer lies next to your skin. It provides an important warmth benefit but also acts as a wicking to get rid of your sweat (or glow if you're a lady!) which otherwise makes you feel wet and very cold! Typically this layer includes:

The Middle Layer

This layer lies between the middle and outer layers. Typically it provides warmth by adding air or by reflecting body heat back inwards. It can also provide a wind block. It needs to breathe so any moisture can get out and not chill you. Typically this layer includes:

The Outer Layer

This layer (obviously) lies at the outside. It's main functions are to stop snow and rain getting in and to let moisture out (that breathability thing again!) It also protects you against scrapes when (if?) you fall. Typically this layer includes:
