Type: Adaptive (Disabled) Race Team
Purpose
The British Adaptive Ski Team (BAST) is made up of a small group of dedicated skiers with a range of disabilities who represent Great Britain in International Skiing events throughout the world.
The pinnacle for these skiers is to represent their country at the Paralympics, which are held every four years and at the World Disabled Ski Championships.
In 2004 the responsibility for the management and funding of the team transferred to Disability Snowsport UK which is committed to moving the team forward so that individuals can challenge for medals at major championships and World Cup events.
Disability Snowsport UK in its first management season has been successful in achieving its short term goals of binding this group of racers together into a National Team and recruiting new racers with potential to form a development squad. This limited success has been made possible due to the commitment of the Management Committee, the skiers and the appointment of a part time coach as well as voluntary support.
A comprehensive review has recently been carried out to move BAST forward to the next level of performance. This has resulted in a new management and coaching structure that we are confident will give our skiers the best chance to perform at the highest level and attract new racers into the squad.
Focus this year is on progressing a comprehensive programme that delivers a world class performance for our pre-selected Paralympic athlete’s in Turin 2006
BAST is one of the key functions of Disability Snowsport UK the National Charity for snowsports for people with disabilities and is part of our long term strategy of providing opportunities for those with disabilities to achieve their potential and participate at the their level of choice.
Note that BAST is seeking both financial support and helpers to assist athletes at race events.
