Tell you what, Mr Bigpotatoes, I've just been contracted to build a new ski boot for a ski company, I start next week, the boot is due for Launch 2016, so we've got plenty of time.
The boot brief is; 40degrees ROM walk mode, She'll only in 26 must weigh in at 1400grams (use google to look up grams, they're like ounces only in colour), Full Touring and Alpine compatable, full rebound without lag, full overlap, and 130knm of resistance.
That's all I've got, you do yours, I'll do mine, ready? Or are you hanging out with some moody mountain goat discussing the merits of heavy beardage above 5,000m?

Serriadh, it's a long way off, and I'm not sure until all the patents get nailed that we'll even be able to reveal any part of the process until December 2015, kinda gutted about that, could draw in a nice audience. We have the best skier out there to run the tests though, certainly in his domain, WeatherwatcherWindsurfblokey has probably had sex with him.

And that dude FYI was Mr Dynafit who I ended up touring with once after I met his son in Norway, long story, but I hope I'm still that fit and a strong skier when I'm in my mid 70's

You make some fair points i.e. each year the touring world brings out the holy grail of boots, bindings etc (e.g. Naxos, Salomon Quest etc) only for them to be not worth touching with a barge pole less than 12 months later. What boots do you ski in?

DB, This is very true, however IME you are right but this year, we've seen massive massive breakthroughs. Weight and power and now achievable, and most importantly, affordable. The Cochise took us by surprise to some degree, we preordered and then sold out in no time, the weight, power, compatibility and Rom are certainly not the best in individual terms, but the combination is unparalleled. My reluctance last year was due to the point raised by Weathermankiteboy, the triad plastic is so darn soft, I wasn't happy to sell it to my clients at the price for the life span, 500euros. My clients, told me they didn't care, and that if it functioned perfectly the lifespan was a small price to pay. Many of these guys are skiing really hard in life threatening situations. The net result has been a winner. Next year we have 3 competitors rivalling these boots, Salomon, K2 and Black Diamond, however, as previously mentioned the next lightest model is 400 grams heavier, which in these modern times puts the boots in a completely different category.

The boots out of the box are a million miles away from fitting me, beefy overlap liner, some heel lifters, and some easy stretches.and she's replaced my 9 year serving Race Shells without loosing any performance, gaining a satisfactory walk mode, and saving 1300 grams, I also use 1 boot for everything, creating a "constant" in my life, which at current is welcome.

If you see Mr Dynafit's grandson again please do pass on that I'm less than happy forking out circa €800 on two sets of bindings in the last 12 months that now need modifying because of a design fault. The only way he will be riping my legs off is when his shitty bindings fail before I get a chance to have them modified.

The only other boot I think comes close, this year or next is the Mercury, but not having an overlap construction with wider than shell skis creates some lateral lag in torsional energy. Dalbello Kr2 have addressed this problem, in 3 piece shells, with lower pivot on the coller and broader overlap tongue on clog. That said, I'm referring to construction in regards to the KR2, not to confuse this with a touring/free touring/access/hybrid.

Weathercam, Axon, exactly as DB described, sold hundreds over the years to the Shamabees, wouldn't put flowers in them now. How's them wobbly rivets? Great job on the liners too, when you finish holding a Wet finger up in the air, Bootfitting holds a lot of new challenges for you.

Mercury will fit in STH and All Marker Bindings, with the Sally, the delta is seriously effected as toe height rises, with Marker the AFD descends, so more creativity with balance is possible. Given what you say about the feet, Tecnica are favourite. Before I go getting a rep for pimping Tecnica, for balance I'd like to add, outside this boot, discounting the WC shells, Tecnica make and always have done, IMO, the worst ski boots on the market, where they pulled the Cochise from, I have no idea, well actually I have, thank you Stefano.

DB, in my subjective opinion the Mercury with the tongue in is stiffer than the Titan and has a more pleasant flex to it.

Ah yes Titan, not an overlap, a piece of overlapped plastic riveted onto the boot doesn't have the same effect. The Mercury was designed originally on the Titan, the overlap removed and Dalbello Tongues placed instead for ROM.

I'd heard it wasn't a proper overlap but only being a punter/wannabee couldn't see why. Never understood why Dynafit put a non-overlap liner in a (semi) overlap boot either. A real bitch to get in and out of especially yesterday (refrozen slush = hopping round the carpark chasing the boot around with one sock on). At least I get a warm glow knowing that I'm supporting Mr Dynafit's grandson's skiing adventures. 
Thanks I'd assumed the Mercury was not as stiff as it's only 3 buckles and a strap, plus that the rocker sole would cause problems in Alpine bindings and I wanted a one boot solution. Is the Mercury a similar fit to the Titan (good for narrow feet with a high instep)?

DB, errh that wasn't his grandson that was Mr Dynafit himself, actually Manfred Barthel, it was his son, Fritz I first met, and funny enough that was after equipment failure of said brand.
So bit of a story...
We were up in Lyngen Alps (Arctic), our guide on the first day steps into his binding and the front pin shears off - so not too much in the way of spares up there!
Luckily he had some telemark skis so we were able to carry on. Three or four days later we're skinning up and this group comes back down. At that time of year other people we'd met were in the "industry" such as testing kit / photo shoots / pr jollies etc think we were the only "punters" it seemed
I noticed this guy was branded up with Dynafit so I asked if he was anything to do with Dynafit, to which his friends with him, exclaimed that he was Mr Dynafit (Fritz). When he was shown the broken pin he snapped it out of the guides hand!
We kept in touch, and a couple of years later him and his father and some others came down to the Queyras (National Park near Serre Chevalier) and I joined them for a couple of days and had my legs torn off by some of these guys in their 60's and 70's.

DB, if it's any consolation they have not been too involved with the brand, think I first met them was around 6 years ago as the company went more commercial / corporate and that's when the "plastic" started appearing, think it's now run by the bean counters (father and son were engineers) as is so often the case now in sports equipment, apart from still a few brands where the initial founder still runs a tight ship.

Interesting ........ Dynafit are owned by Salewa who are based in Bozen South Tyrol where I will be ski touring at the end of next week. Maybe I should just roll up and say "sort my ruddy bindings out".
In all fairness, Manfred and Fritz did produce something very different that changed the touring world even though they had very little backing. It could have been worse - I could have bought Salomon Quest boots or Naxo bindings.
It's not easy to pick out the good stuff. Who would have thought Technica would have produced a great tech fitting touring boot where Salomon failed? Difficult to get honest opinions (retailers and users tend to be biased). It's also not easy when people give strong opinions about something they haven't used either. You pays your money, you takes your chances.

Interesting topic. Looking to replace my Sally CS8 100 flex 25.5 alpine boots (approaching 30 weeks and understand life of plastic and liner is around 20) probably for next season with a touring boot and have Freeride pro bindings. Really after one boot for everything, which seems to be increasingly practical. Sales this spring? and for what? or wait for the bus around the corner?
On Dynafits; was skiing with young lady and commented on her DFs. Response most unladylike about them and thought FR Pro a good choice. I've found the easy transition to walk mode a real bonus for those flattish walkouts and gentle no skin ascents.

It takes a few more seconds to change mode in dynafits (and less than that if you're not using radicals...). Why do so many people make this out to be such a huge hassle? And why haven't these people gone out and purchased some skis with fishscale bases and nice 3 pin telemark bindings?

well, that all got personal. I would count myself as a "weight-weenie" so the Cochise and BD factor were out. Found the scarpa maestrale (not rs) for £307 and went with them. I do want to spend time touring and the Wapta Icefield is calling but so is La Grave. Thanks for the info and arguments. Rob
