Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

This article on the isolated northern Rockies resort of Jasper in Alberta is by Mark Frary of The Times.

Having seen a wolf from the ski bus, he decides to play it safe on the slopes!

We had a week at the Jasper Park Lodge a few years ago after 3 weeks at Banff. Jasper is one of those places where the locals look at you when you walk into a bar - you can almost hear them saying "you're not from round here are you?"

On the other hand, in one night we saw:

Hale Bop comet,
total eclipse of the moon,
Northern lights (awesome)

and we were visited by Elk in the garden of our chalet.

The ski area is really friendly, they honestly want you to have a nice time. They could give the French a few lessons that's for sure.

We were in JPL last January and it does appear a gorgeous spot. To see wolves, elk etc freely roaming is quite something! The ski area we loved, it isnt massive, but as telford mike says, it is so friendly and it is also lovely and quiet!

The only thing is that it can be very icy. When we were there it was uncommon for the hotel staff to have to abandon vehicles because they couldnt get back up a slight gradient, it was something of a death trap for walking on! Thankfully last year was exceptional because it got so warm (then freezing again making ice). We enjoyed it so much that there is a strong possibility we will return this year. However, we would recommend that anyone look into accomodation in town instead of the fairmont (at least in quiet winter times). The Fairmont is gorgeous, but with it being so quiet and so icy, you are restricted in movement and there is really only one place to eat. In addition, town is a $20 taxi away, so not cheap to go eating in town.

It was more likely to be a coyote than a wolf. There are quite a lot of coyotes that hang around the town area. The wolves tend to stay out in the forest.

I haven't been to Jasper for a few years, now. It would be interesting to go again, if only to access the areas that were hike-in only, but that are now lift-served.
