Well, on that basis, yes please. Not that I'll be there (- but that's not what you asked).

Even the Titanic took 4 hours to sink.

The way things are going they may even outlive the Ski Club 2.0

Sadly I am otherwise engaged on 18 May ... but am otherwise generally available for soirées, bar/bat mitzvahs, weddings and funerals.

And also ... can the organisation be motivated to address these issues and the future?
An interesting figure has emerged. Perhaps one of the SCGB's brighter moves was to elect Chemmy Alcott as its new President last November.
Since then, of course, she became a key presenter on the BBC's coverage of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

A week ago she gave this sparky and funny live motivational talk ... from an office building in Wimbledon.
Not sure who watched it going out live on Facebook (on a Wednesday afternoon) but here's a golden opportunity for anyone who needs that little boost, and was maybe out shopping at that time:

"We are live with Chemmy Alcott at Ski Club of Great Britain HQ"

Update:
An apology is due, to readers (both regular and new) of this 125-page thread. The question above should never have been posted: the Ski Club of GB 'chat forum' is still going - there was a re-design of the SCGB's homepage, and it's still there, but it's accessed from a new box:

https://www.skiclub.co.uk/

Specifically:
http://www2.skiclub.co.uk/skiclub/forum/

That said, the forum is extremely quiet: no posting to any of the forum's 11 sections for 8 days. Incredibly, one section - 'Snow Conditions' has not received a single report from any of the Club's claimed 28,000 members since 7 February. That's despite SCGB members on the mountains being in perfect positions to impartially report snow conditions to fellow members - a very long-standing function of the Club. Another section dedicated to the Club's own holiday programme - 'Ski Club Freshtracks' - has received no posting since 25 March. But there were lots of Freshtracks holidays in April - did no one have anything to report?

Moving onto another section of the overall website - 'Events' ...

https://www.skiclub.co.uk/events?month=5

... there appears to be not a single SCGB event listed for June, or July, or August, or September, or October, or any other month.

A club with no events?

The Ski Club of Great Britain has a Council of 12 members and lists 33 members of staff (including 4 heads of departments and 8 persons listed as managers).
Perhaps a 'strategy event' could be organised along the lines of 'Why do we have no events and no postings on our forum?'
Or 'Is there evidence of life on Planet Wimbledon?' Should CPR be applied?

But then again, the Ski Club has 37 resort Facebook groups, which were used by almost 5,000 people during the past season, with regular posts from Ski Club Leaders, and the several thousand people who went on a Freshtracks holiday, skied with a SCGB Leader, used the Instructor-led Guiding service, or those simply looking for information and advice.

Maybe using the popularity of a single online channel (a chat forum), which for many organisations has mostly been replaced by social media, is not always the best indication of how busy an organisation is.

Maybe they should drop the forum and link to facebook instead? A lot of forums have died over the past few years so that wouldn't be surprising.

Personally I think th "shenanigans" were grossly exaggerated, thoughtful use of FB enables lots of people to keep in touch with friends and family, despite the GDPR your data is out there is so many places FB is possibly one of the least of your worries, if indeed you are worried.

snow report
 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
I'd certainly suspect [davidof could perhaps address this] that for the Ski Club of Great Britain to vest its 'social media future' in Facebook ...

... [and by the way the SCGB Chat Forum has now endured another 10 days (so that's 18 days in total) of total inaction from its "28,000" members since 19 May] ...

... is to run the risk of saying "Facebook is the solution to our internal member-member club communications and discussion activity". That's irrespective of the "shenanigans" referred to by esaw1 and so brusquely dismissed by FFIRMIN.

The problem with this is that Facebook then becomes the principal data-carrier and data-hoover of the SCGB's own membership base. It acquires infinitely more data power (knowledge of SCGB members) than the SCGB itself, and effectively takes over the SCGB by acquiring its principal asset - its membership list. Because, by extension, the "5000" figure above would expand to 'all SCGB members who are Facebook members'. And does the "5000" figure include all double-counting of individual members who happen to belong to more than one of the "37 resort Facebook groups"?

Amidst all the 'asset dispersal' and 'asset disposal' carried out by the SCGB in the past 12 months (sale of Wimbledon HQ and transfer of library etc. to De Montfort Uni) ... one is left wondering what is the core strategy for rebuilding a 'next generation' of skiers who are to be SCGB members?

The much touted 'Line-S' ... "With over 20,000 members ..." ...

https://www.line-s.co.uk/

... is, we're told, the key to establishing ex-student membership numbers. Is that happening? Line-S has been going for some years now, and thousands of those "20,000 members" - if not the vast majority of them - will have now graduated.

What about the [open/close inverted commas] 'Ski Pub of Great Britain'? Please refer to sub-heading '
THE ‘ALPINE-THEMED’ PUB' in these notes [Nov 2017] of the most recent SCGB AGM ...

Quote:
An agreement has been reached with a proven operator of pubs and restaurants who will be opening an Alpine themed pub in Central London in 2018. They will display many of the pictures, skis, trophies, boards and other artefacts which will be visible to many people on a daily basis. We have taken care to ensure that they remain in our ownership and are suitably protected and insured. This venue will be available for member functions, meetings and industry events and will become an official Ski Club venue.

Much like the Korean peninsular, could the forthcoming Alpi-pub* bring forth a reunion between the 2 tribes?

I’m sure I speak for many many wonderful open-minded, jovial snowheads, when I say that I’d certainly be up for the opening night of North Korea’s latest attempt at snocialising.

We could make it members only to avoid the riff-raff (ahem...sorry, not sorry, DG and the north’s thuggish overweight charismatic leader )

I’m afraid I will have to leave it to the owners of the venue to decide when to announce details. They’ll have a carefully planned PR schedule and I wouldn’t want to undermine that. I’m sure the SCGB will announce the details once they are available.

The SCGB announcement did say Central London.

I'm sure we all have our own thoughts about what counts as 'Central' London but for me Hammersmith doesn't quite make it.

I wouldnt say Hammersmith was Central London (being zone 2, and not even all of zone 1 is really central London). Also dont think that Hammersmith would be a good location for such a themed pub as its not a destination enought for its nataural clientele to travel from where they would reside to it and doubt there would be enough local interest. So good luck if it is here but I imagine it would be doors after a year.

And I'm afraid this is not correct. The SCGB clearly announced plans for the pub in Dec 2017, just a few months before the pub's scheduled opening. Quoting the Club's official magazine Ski+Board, Dec 2017-Jan 2018 ... page 31 ...

@Tubaski, @ALQ, plenty of alpine themed bars in London and there are bound to be more - https://www.timeout.com/london/bars-and-pubs/ski-lodge-bars-in-london - but they are mainly pop ups and open for 6-8 weeks only, like Nov to early Jan. In my opinion that's about the right timeframe, themed pubs generally have a limited life span and I think the new SCGB one will be no different - a novelty and probably start well and then they'll discover it just doesn't work - remember Bodo’s Schloss? Bit the dust.

I think you'll find that if you talk to those who are most in the know at the Ski Club of Great Britain [the innermost core of the Club's Council] that this is not the case at all. The pub was due to open several months ago.

So, no mention of 'autumn' there.
And this was reported directly to SCGB members by its [outgoing] chairman Rob Crowder at the last Annual General Meeting, on 19 November 2017 ...

Quote:
THE ‘ALPINE-THEMED’ PUB ...
An initiative to start this new venture - which will contain SCGB historical artefacts and function as a venue for meetings, events and ‘industry partners’ - has been forged with a commercial operator and the building is planned for a 2018 opening in central London. No further details were given, except that Crowder predicted that if it was a success there might be more Alpine-themed pubs in northern England “and perhaps Edinburgh” he added.

So, no mention of 'autumn' there either.
The idea seems to have had a very very long gestation. Quoting Joanna Percy on Facebook, 13 October 2017 ...

Calling my Facebook friends who are members of the Ski Club of Great Britain. The AGM is in November and I am standing for election for Ski Club Council. I have had years of fun as a member, Rep and Leader with the Club and made so many friends through it. I am very keen that to help make it a CLUB again with social events both in resort and UK and to widen its appeal everyone interested in Skiing and Snowboarding. Concerned also to safeguard the history and memorabilia of the Club and skiing. In 1997 when last on Council, at the time of the 'move' [to Wimbledon from Belgravia] I suggested an Alpine themed pub. Happily I see it is in this year's plans! Yeah!!

So, 21 years later ....................

................ we don't know the location of the pub, the date it will open, or its operator. Gerry Aitken, a twice-serving director of the Ski Club of Great Britain informs us ...
