@limegreen1, Goldsmtiz will grow weary of picking on the ski club and will turn his attentions to admin's alleged tax issues again. When that happens I shall enjoy watching sH waving flaming torches and pitchforks about as you all work yourselves up into a frenzy.

Ski Club 2.0? Yeah right! You've just about staggered to 50k registered 'members' in 14yrs, and only about three dozen of them make all the noise. The on snow side does well if it sends 250 out in a season. Give it 10yrs and snowheads won't exist, imo.

In the meantime, ban and censor what you like, I couldn't give two sh*ts.

In recent hours this discussion thread has passed another major milestone - 300,000 hits - so please ignore all the negativity above.

Of course, this thread actually refers to the 2012 relaunch of the Ski Club of Great Britain Chat Forum, 8 years after the SCGB's decision of Feb 2004 to shut down its original chat forum from the general public. That decision by the Club - essentially not to host the 'big discussion' about skiing or British-based skiing - triggered the launch of snowHeads in Feb 2004.

Although the SCGB's 'open' chat forum was relaunched to public view/participation in 2012, the reality is that it's been a damp squib for 5 long years, with a tiny link to it languishing at the base of the skiclub.co.uk home page. No commitment to the concept of free discussion at all. There's been a slight change/improvement recently, with the SCGB website redesign and chat forum linking from a more prominent spot ... but discussion of skiing within the Ski Club of GB still seems very subdued and tedious. This uninspiring discussion line about 'single supplements' is the most recent, apparently ...

You simply cannot insult DG about factual inaccuracy while spouting such utter drivel, you either have not done any research or you are attempting to talk down the size of an organisation that (despite your behaviour) has quite happily tolerated you up to now.

It might be appropriate for you to go back to the SCGB forum, at least nobody is there for you to insult and offend.

Remind me again how many members the ski club has vs the 50,000 registered SHs?

You make sure your posts are interspersed with a fair dose of the contempt you have towards snowheads and its members so one has to question why you're really here? If Goldsmith has obsessional mental health issues it doesn't look like you're far behind.

Or maybe you just want everyone to know that being a c**t is celebrated and rewarded within the SCGB and the reason Goldsmith is unwelcome is he's the wrong sort of c**t? Maybe its one of those clubby things I've never quite understood.

Just had a look at the SCGB forums for the first time (I have no axe to grind with SCGB). Nothing wrong with them, just not many people on them. Would also be useful to have more than one month's postings on the page so that you could more easily flick through them. Good thing about Snowheads is that you can ask a question and get multiple helpful replies within a few hours, usually.

The ski club has about 18-19k paid up membership 'units'. Because some of these 'units' are families, the number of members goes up to 27-28k. How many paid up members does snowHeads have? The ski club has 250k registered users of the website. Of the 50k registered snowHeads, how many actually post anything, a few hundred? People go to the ski club site for information not to chit chat.

Anyway, snowHeads has performed about as well as I thought it would, well below average for a forum specialising in a mass participation sport. Big yourselves up all you like though, if it makes you feel more important in life.

As far as I am concerned the ski club has always about getting those people that want to get a bit more out of their skiing to do so, whether via the leading system or the holiday programme, not waffling about it endlessly on message boards.

There are plenty of ski club members that post here because of course in theory they can do so with anonymity and who have no animosity at all against Snowheads.

I have a lot of sympathy with Gerry's views however I do wish he would tone it down somewhat as I think that would be more productive.

If I look at, say, https://www.skiclub.co.uk/france/resorts/tignes/snow-and-weather it initially seems to be helpful: "Thu 03 August 2017 12:00: Limited skiing due to the lack of snow". But clicking on "View historical reports" gives "Sorry No snow data available", and further down the page the latest "Resort Leaders Snow Report" is from 2015! Is that supposed to make me think it is worth joining SCGB?

Whereas http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=126850has far more up-to-date information.

Far from be it from me to praise the ski club but they at least claim to have more up to date information: from the 3rd August, whereas snowheads info dates from 25 July.

It is not exactly a scoop to say it was a lousy winter followed by a super-heated summer so glacier skiing is not exactly going to be good. Tignes seems to have turned the Glacier web cam off now (always a bad sign) although the last image from 31/7 isn't exactly great: https://tignes.roundshot.com/grande-motte/ - the "limited skiing" seems to be a couple of pistes by a drag on the far left.

Agreed, but my point was more that the ski club site initially appears to have only one (admittedly up-to-date) report from Tignes in the past two years. Perhaps it is updated every day, perhaps there is more data available to members, but it doesn't initially give the impression of something worth joining.

But isn't that really the point - why would anyone want to take information filtered by some "club" organisation when there's easy and direct access to the source of that data. They were "disintermediated" years ago. Perhaps the rude people were too busy throwing sticks and stones at each other to have noticed, but the world has moved on.

@philwig, because reps, guided groups, hols with like minded folk? All of which you seem to pay extra for. It seems to me it's basically a TO with a membership fee or something you can benefit from if you're lucky enough to be going somewhere that reps can still provide a guiding service.

No, it's a not for profit club that organises holidays for its members. snowHeads is a for profit TO with a forum bolted on.

Even when challenged on factual accuracy you can't get your numbers right, even about the SCGB. 250k registered users? Out of a membership of 27-28k?

Must do better, perhaps a few too many sherberts or posting through the tears of a sad old man who just can't work a calculator any more. Please stop criticising another for inaccuracy, based on posts in the last couple of days you wouldn't even get a job as his editorial assistant.

The 250k registered users aren't paid up members, they are just people who registered a free account on the club's website.

when resorts like Tignes turn their webcams off whenever the conditions are dire maybe there is a need for some accurate reporting.

Snowheads and other forums are ok for the big resorts in season... although the forum is not without its own group-think and spin.

But the SCGB is proudly boasting you can ski with a rep in a massive 18 resorts around the world. Even if a few who are on a freebie with a Freshtracks hol elsewhere chip in a conditions report it's not exactly sweeping coverage.

I don't know how you address group think. No one who has spent their own money will admit conditions were shite although I think we did have some reports where people said they skipped skiing a few days over NY because it was so poor this year. You can usually get enough e.g. when snow making is being praised to know when it is don't bothef.

I used to think that, until having huge fun on thin strips of snow in the Dolomites over the last couple of years.

The group think I find tiresome is the generalised slagging off of France in its entirety, in favour of all things Austrian.

I think in part it may be a reaction to the fact that some people start skiing in France and then assume that it's the only Alpine country worthwhile skiing in. All the Alpine countries have their own strengths and weaknesses as ski destinations.

Personally I learnt to ski in Austria, and am very fond of it, but since then in Europe I've had many enjoyable ski trips to France, Switzerland and Italy in addition, and also Norway and Finland. Vive la difference! Madeye-Smiley

If I had to put money on it I'd say that the trend is if your early experience is in the somewhat stark French megaresorts and their shoebox appartments and gloriously indifferent French service plus lack of real apres buzz then your first trip to Austria will be a bit of an eyeopener. One might say that the Austrians just do skiing with more elan than the French. Actual on the slopes experience is little different.

Sure but it's not what people tend to be exposed to when they are first getting into skiing or doing it on a budget or whatever. I don't really give a damn - I'd happily stay in a Croydon tower block and live off supernoodles if necessary to access some really great skiing. In fact Le Corbier seems to be designed on this very premise.

Point is the genuinely charming alpine villages aren't really what France is known for.

Must say that I've been trying to post something on the SCGB chat forum (related to skiing and not just general banter [for a change]), but there seems to be a loooong delay in the sending of the validation e-mail to allow you to post. Bit annoying, really. Anyone else experienced this?

So, 117 pages and this is my first posting - I've tried to go back to the OP and take a look at the Ski Club website and Forum unbiased. Here's my observations:

General forum - 2 out of an advertised 6,693 : where have the other 6,691 threads gone? Presumably archived after inactivity, so really, not a very active forum.
Chalets/Apartments - 0
Resorts and Travel - 1

Even for mid-summer, this is pretty dead, so SCGB have a lot of work to do to get it into something that I'll visit again. I might take a look later in the year.

Obviously SCGB is a commercial operation as it straight away prompts me for membership. Well, fair enough, I'll take a look - But 'Find out more about membership' just links to a page where I join. This doesn't tell me anything specifically about what my £65 actually gets me. I skip to some other pages as no way am I joining yet: Then I find out that full membership is £130/year but I have to join to get any more info. Just saying I get Insurance etc. tells me very little and I certainly won't give you a direct debit on so little info!

That's already more time than I'm prepared to spend entering information bit by bit and being drip-fed. Guys, you need to streamline the dialogue and provide more info up-front about benefits. Most people aren't comfortable with inputing a lot of personal data just to find out. This isn't like a car insurance search.

Yes, some of the supporting pages are useful and I'd possibly stay on the site to wander 'round those if I was interested. Free sites don't have the resources to work popular topics up into the sort of structured guides and recommendations that a commercial company can build. So you should think about this as the route to membership rather than any Forum. In fact, such a quiet forum could be counter-productive.

The forum sits a bit half-way between a TripAdvisor flat Q&A and a thread-rich snowheads/j2ski site. Your challenge is to get the topics up, even if it means manufacturing a few from information you already have (nothing wrong with that). Possibly extend the archive time even if this leaves some old threads in place (better than nothing). If your business model is to bait through the Forum then this isn't working: I'd recommend that you actually drop it and concentrate on your advice pages. I wouldn't be surprised if your analytics show that it's actually diverting people away from where you want them to end-up.
