Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Not that I expect him to take a blind bit of notice, I'll join the list of those who think DG is now abusing sH in this thread.

I would be happier to see less of the sock puppetry, no more cutting and pasting from SCGB forum threads, and ideally an end to the oft repeated questions which are not going to get any answers here. Perchance to dream...

The short - and I hope polite - response is that this is a fully free medium of public discussion.

If anyone finds 'the deconstruction of the SCGB' an uncomfortable or tasteless prospect, they may avert their gaze. There is no obligation to be a rubber-necker.

The male-heavy nature of the SCGB (12% of its board comprises one woman) suggests that this is a particularly significant aspect of its current situation, compared to 25-30 years ago. Is Gerry also concerned about that, or merely the errant behaviour of one male member ... concerning its ski holidays?

Dubaian, you may be aware that this thread gets 1000+ hits on a good day, and (as above) those who prefer not to read it don't have to read it.

I genuinely apologise for the 'sock puppetry' on this occasion. My regular computer was corrupted by crooks, and I've no current access to the passwords for my real names David Goldsmith and Comedy Goldsmith.

Don't know how he defines 'some months' - does 11th January 2015 count? Is that after winter - not in the northern hemisphere?. Yup the date of his next post.

@Dubaian, DG seems to think that the number of views or engagements with this thread adds strength to his arguments. He refuses to listen to the very many people who disagree with what he's doing.

I think we should maybe all make a pact to not look at or post on this thread anymore. I know he will just keep bumping the thread himself but if that bumping runs to pages and pages maybe he will eventually realise what a fool he is making of himself?

I see SCGB snow overview still dated Thursday 12th February.

Do the club really believe that their snow reports will win new recruits?

I suspect managed decline is quietly accepted and a small number take the view that the club will be viable long enough to see them out.

@Pedantica, I was just thinking why I am drawn to this thread, and your post a page or two back sums it up for me : slow motion car crash.

I so want the protagonist to wake up and see how spectacularly he is failing, but I fear previous evidence and current behavior has shown he is unlikely to.

David, I am sure you are a nice person, and I respect your right to free speech, but only expect me to listen if you speak with wisdom. Unfortunately, wisdom needs experience and even then, it is rare to emerge. It seems you have the experience, but the wisdom is not apparent here.

Not necessarily. It's purely an indicator of the runaway success of this thread: 230,000+ hits, 4000+ posts, 105+ pages. Hundreds reading it per bump/bounce.

There are many many people, both within and outwith the SCGB, who want that organisation to be liberated from its situation. Those are the people I generally have in mind when posting. The Establishment, who you seem to represent in making that odd remark, is well capable of looking after itself (as we've seen over the past 50 years of the SCGB).

Shimmy Alcott wrote:

George Jones wrote:

Interesting point, George, but how can one legitimately or responsibly 'manage the decline' of an organisation? People are employed by the SCGB, and there are assets involved (which are owned by the membership). You'll need to expand on this!

That's a gross exaggeration and distortion of what was written, so it gets the response it deserves. I'm taking issue with male members and directors (Council members) of the Ski Club of Great Britain who think it should be run like some sort of 19th century gentleman's club. The SCGB may have excluded women initially (this needs checking) - perhaps the all-male founders in 1903 believed that women did not go skiing - but in the 21st century they should be equally represented in the decision-making function of any progressive organisation (I'd have thought).

Love and best wishes

Those people "outwith" the club who want liberation have no say as they are outside the club and not members .. So that point is beyond ridiculous. Those within the club have a voice and can use it without your help. Why do you think they need your voice ??
The establishment is well capable of looking after itself ...for over 50 years ..
It expelled you and continues on ..... Looking after itself ... A club with members ....
So what as an outsider ... what really is point ???

Exactly ... "You'd " have thought. If the members of the club will want it differently then they "the members " can sort it out. They obviously do not have a problem ... It has been said before its not about having equality its about having the best people for the job ...

Totally ridiculous on all points ....

You must be joking. The SCGB invited me back with a half-price subscription only last month, and then welcomed me back to membership with a charming email.
What you've said is wholly incorrect. I've worked for six consecutive editors of the SCGB magazine (Elisabeth Hussey to Arnie Wilson) for a 30-year period since 1976.

Rather than assuming I'm a "nasty piece of work" (what an unpleasant phrase. Would you appreciate that description of yourself?) why not actually meet the person in question, or ask someone who knows me? I get on fine with just about anyone, and work with a huge team of people.

Is the SCGB really a 'club'?
All of this is based on it being a 'club' with a 'club' ethos.
I am a member of a rugby club (would you believe it... based in Bad Reichenhall, Germany.... UK tour coming up... look out for dates wink ) I know everyone in this club and we get together to socialise and play.
This is a bit similar to any local sports club (albeit golf clubs have a much wider scope; and this is where the 'clubbyness' starts to degrade).
Is it not a paid-for service that allows 'members' to get 'club' beneifts.
IMO that is what the club is and represents. If you want an actual 'sports club' type of feel then you are out of luck unless you are in the special seats at a meeting.

DG - go for it... make the Great British Ski Club and find new club members!

If you wrote that in all seriousness then you must be living in some strange parallel universe to the rest of us.

@flangesax, Agreed, the SCGB isn't a club in the way most of us would think of one. I'm a member of a cycling club and know most of the members. I'm also a member of British Cycling, which is the governing body for the sport as recognized byt the UCI.. I would liken the SCGB more to British Cycling - it provides a service for some but isn't really a 'club' . It works for some of us and not for others, fair enough. There's no obligation to join. Why DG seems to be dedicating his time to disbanding it I have no idea. As you suggest he would be better doing something positive if he feels so passionate and organising his own club - although Snowheads seems to be doing a pretty good job from where I'm sat.

@andy, I think that's fair comment. You have to be a member of BC to have a UCI racing licence , would Snowsport England be the equivalent?
For myself and family the SCGB fulfills a few functions which make it worthwhile for us - insurance (annual for the whole family, v good value), good range of discounts (we recoup the membership each year), resort Leaders who we have used several times (not used Ambassadors yet so can't comment), Members catch up (this is new and we've allready arranged to meet up with another family on an upcoming trip), the occassional get - together (went to an enjoyable evening at Hemel last autumn, free entry and use of demo skis plus a few tips from Mark Jones), the magazine (always find it a reasonably enjoyable read) and Frehtracks holidays.
I think that's a reasonable list of benefits and makes it worthwhile for us. I agree its not really a 'club' and perhaps many years ago it was in the old rather exclusive meaning of the word. In those days I very much doubt it would have been my kind of thing. From all the dealings I've had with SCGB it seems to me they understand this and have moved on with the times, unlike some!

I think @flangesax and @andy make fair points. But isn't it down to the nature of snow sports in the UK? It's rather seasonal and most skiers ski for a few weeks a year, as opposed to other sports which are played more regularly. So what do you do for the rest of the year?
My other sports clubs were mostly about playing the sport. The squash club was 99% sports and not a great deal of socialising - we turned up, put our name on the ladder for a partner and played. Not alot of admin as it was based in a leisure centre. Soon after having my ar$e handed to me by a new lady member, I joined a tennis club which was slightly more social. Again, not alot of non-sport related socialising and admin was very well handled. I've noticed a recent change in some golf clubs (stuffy ones are still hanging on to plus fours, bobble hats and smoking crack pipes, but IMO dying) to being more open and flexible; adjusting to societal pressures. And even then, there's alot more to be done IMHO.
I'm not sure sHs is a club in the traditional sense for most members.

Of course the SCGB isn't for everyone or even to everybody's taste. But IMO it is valued by a good number of British skiers and I don't see anything comparable around.
Snowheads is fantastic and a far better forum than that provided by the Ski Club, which is used very little. It has to be said that the opening post on this thread (a long time ago) posted by a Ski Club employee, by all accounts, is pretty cringeworthy and a massive own goal . Doesn't make everything they do wrong though.

I know that every now and then I get a cringe-worthy phone call (similar to the OP) that seems to have 'selected' me to be worthy of advertising with them for an extortionate rate (haven't seen those figures in DG's breakdowns as yet).

I used to go on their Freshtracks holidays. On one occasion, shortly after my father had been taken ill, I asked if I could postpone my holiday and be moved to the following months trip to Flaine. They refused; they were happy to pocket my money and suggested that I claim on my travel insurance. I mistakenly assumed it was a club, and that they would try to help their members in a time of need. Their female CEO was very unfriendly.

I suppose I quite enjoy DG's rants - maybe he's giving their management some well deserved headaches!
