I've never done this sort of thing...but Val Thorens opens Saturday 19th November, and you can't go any higher than that. Espace Killy opens Saturday 26th November. Not sure how early season is for late bookings but I'd wait until there were signs of snow before booking.

I've done Ischgl at that time of year as it usually opens last w/e Nov.
Les Deux Alpes would be an option as would Hintertux, Zermatt, Cervinia

Dan, I dont think there is a glacier ! There is one, further up the valley, but not a pisted ski-on type. It is high & I learnt there over many teenage trips. Solden, just down the valley does have access to a glacier or two.

sjw, welcome to Snowheads. The other year I did Val Thorens at end of Nov and quite a few lifts were open. Snow was reasonably good and as the resort is high you are guaranteed some snow. I would recommend it.

sjw, Tignes is open now - opening of the link to Val D is supposed to be Nov 25 - depending on snow .....

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

stephen, that looks v. nice! And pretty much deserted - an important question for me - were all the mountain restaurants / shops in the resort open or did it look like a place getting ready to start?

Ian , I think all mountain restaurants were open on the runs that were open (can't be 100% sure).
The resort itself was fully open for business on both occasions.
I do remember that Dick's T Bar opened on the 5th Dec as they had free food laid on in the evening.
We got accomodation via the Val D'Isere tourist office - I'll post the cost of accomodation when I find it on my mail archive.

You know it makes sense.

Ian Hopkinson, I think my earliest Vd'I trip was something like 5 November. We stayed in Vd'I and drove round to Tignes to ski.
Done quite a few mid Nov trips there. I rather like the getting ready to open feel but you are limited re bars and mountain restos until early Dec. If Dicks opens 5 Dec then I suspect the opening party will be 8th or 9th.
We're going on the 8th and I expect most things will be open (it's the WC DH weekend I believe, unfortunately).

Ian Hopkinson, The resort has a really nice buzz at that time of year, yes some of the shops aren't open, but those that are are filled with exited people......It's almost my favourite time to ski .
