Poster: A snowHead

After lunch in Chinatown, I popped into Ellis Brigham.
I note Salomon boots no longer have replacement heels and toes.
I thought the irritating honeycomb cut outs were bad enough. No more Salomons for me. Pity. The skis are getting bad reviews I thought they would ensure their boots were still well-regarded.
I also note some shocking pornographic logo T shirts on sale in the streets (not in Ellis Brigham, I hasten to add). Are people looking to cause a breach of the peace, or start fights ?

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Very interesting observation, Latchigo.
I'm trying to think when the replaceable heel and toe first appeared on a (plastic) ski boot. The soles of leather ski boots (now we're going back) could be rebuilt, as far as I know.
Plastic boots took over from leather in the early 1970s. It's got to be at least 20 years since I first saw replaceable sections of the sole of a plastic boot.
Are you saying that all Salomon boots lack the feature? What price level of boots were you looking at?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

More expensive Salomon boots with 'teneighty' written on them lacked replaceable bits. I did not check the whole range
I had noticed, a few years back, expensive ble Lange boots were also lacking.
Nordica and Technica were sound though.

Is there actually any point having a removable heel and toe peice (Except on touring/ski mountaineering boots perhaps)? By the time you've trashed them, you're probably due a new pair of boots anyway, unless you go on lots of epic cross the parking lot hikes. And if you're really into keeping your boots forever, then do you reckon you'll still be able to get new ones when they wear out anyway?
Cat tracks are the way forward, as well as saving your boot soles, you'll find getting around is much easier too
Incidently my new boots are Technica Diabalo's with removeable heel and toes (old ones were Lange's without) - but this was pretty low on my priority list!!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

stuarth, i think it is worthwhile. i had the heels and toes on my Atomic boots replaced this summer because they were no longer DIN compatible and the ski tech fitting my bindings was looking a bit nervous about it. they were about 3 years old and had about 30 weeks of skiing on them. other than the heel and toe the boots are well used but in pretty good shape. Atomic supply the replacements for nothing which gets a thumbs up from me.

What is the point of these? Is it purely a marketing feature or is there some half-believable reason why you want holes in your boots?

mine have some sort of an attempt at hatching to "simulate" the honeycomb. mind you they are the world cup factory boot (medium/medium flex)
It is supposed to be to have the same plastic all around, and allow you to have give in the plastic on that side. However, just see how effective it looks when full of snow (ie not at all)

I had the heels and toes on Salomons replaced. It only cost £25. That was a major reason for buying Salomon. Everybody stocked them and repairs were not a problem. I had a pair of Kofflach before that but nobody stocked the replacement bits for these, as Kofflach had limited retail outlets.
Euroski in Surbiton have the old Salomon bits and apparently a lot of Nordica stuff too. It is an old style place. You see the same staff year after year - not a different Aussie/Kiwi every season.

The threoy behind the holes is to reduce lateral edge pressure. It has also been said that, it helped solve a canting based fit issue that proved to be cheaper than replacing both the plug and the suitcase moulds. Look out for more of the holes in forth coming years! As for if they actually work, that maybe a little to subjective to prove as tests have been inconclusive. You just have to look at the world cup curcuit. No racers with the holes!
