Trysil in Norway have managed to score some early season snow thanks to an interesting snow harvesting technique they borrowed from the Swedes. They stored last seasons snow under a blanket of bark chips. Says they only lost 15-20% over the summer...

Several resorts across Europe have been trying similar stuff.

Storing snow in barns, under chips, hay etc.

I am surprised none of the American resorts does it for some early Fall publicity (e.g. A-Basin).

I agree with Keiranm that it can't be good for the flora and fauna that would normally get the chance to recover in the summer once the snow has retreated.
