Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Top Ten Resorts

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Peter Hardy in the Saturday Telegraph kicks of the new season's skiing articles with his personal choice of the Top 10 resorts for skiing. Based on suitability for intermediates and above. He also comments on suitability for boarding and gives sample prices. Longish article.

Top 10

Have a guess before you check the site. Hint - the only US resort comes in at 9 (paradoxically PH rates this as his personal favourite in the world) and the only Canadian is a 10. The rest are European.

Comments / Dissent welcome as usual.

 Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

kuwait_ian, Peter Hardy thinks the Strief is a "benign family run" when not prepared for comps. I have a pic of me at the start gate, in deep snow, so no racing. It was anything but benign, steep and mogulled Puzzled

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I agree, if you include that first rocket-boosting stretch from the start hut - I'm sure Martin Bell can comment!

I wouldn't put Kitz in my top ten or anywhere near it I'm afraid. And I would have classed myself as an intermediate or above at the times I went there. Lovely town and good apre. It might not get in my top 5 in Austria as I would put St Anton, Obergurgl, Saalbach above it as skiing destinations, even Bad Gastien possibly. Kitzbuhel is hugely overated IMO.

The main village, at 2,100m, was a monument to the architectural horrors of the 1960s but recent investment has - almost - transformed it.
Guess the resort is probably too easy - to win you also need to place it correctly in the ranking

These resort rankings are all well and good, but to be honest they are usually judged by expert skiers, who will perhaps overlook a resort that may have more to offer those of lesser skiing capability. It's really down to personal taste and needs in the long run snowHead

Mr Hardy is a very fine fellow. IncogSkiSno, I would venture to suggest that IMHO I think his ranking is a pretty good assessment and impartial. It is quite tricky I agree finding a resort that suits all types...

He's certainly been around - claims to have skied 500 different places. No reason to doubt him. Lucky man.

List mania strikes again. The trouble is that everyone's different; what's great for me might be lousy for you. My top 10 almost certainly isn't the same as yours.

What's needed is a decision engine that can ask 20 relevant questions (eg How important are uncrowded pistes to you? How important is it to have a wide variety of challenging on-piste terrain? How important is a short end-to-end journey from your home in the darkest provinces?) and then recommend a few suitable resorts by using some smart algorithms. Does anyone know if such a thing exists?

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Jonny Jones, something similar was linked to a while back...but I can't remember where. I'm sure another snowHead will remember.

Yes, it's called snowHeads. It uses fuzzy logic rather than smart algorithms, but it will give you good quality advice all the same.
