Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Wild base jump from the new Vanoise Express

Poster: A snowHead
Base jumping - skydiving from cliffs, bridges and high buildings - is arguably the greatest of extreme sports, and here's a novel variation.

Our friends at PisteHors report an audacious 380m base jump from the new Vanoise Express cablecar between Les Arcs and La Plagne....except that the cablecar wasn't used...the leap was done illicitly by traversing the cables themselves!

Unfortunately for the guys involved their video evidence was seized by the Gendarmes on landing. Shame!

[One question: I wonder how they got along the cables - like tightrope walkers, or on their backsides?]

David Goldsmith, our instructor/guide (Christoph Roc) told us about this episode while we were in La Plagne in January. I think the guys got along the cables by slinging something over them and sliding down hanging from the cables (not sure about this...)

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Jonpim, summer camp had the kids doing that over a ravine last year! They called it the 'cochon pendu' technique (hanging pig). Pretty apt description. Not something I'll be trying myself though.

Is that a type of pig-bat hybrid?

Must be, Judging from previous base jumpers antics most of them have already reached the stage where they really need confining for mental health reasons, as I said in a different thread last year they were throwing themselves of teh top of the Eiger North Face and seeing how far they could glide before pulling the rip cord Exclamation

David Goldsmith, A French saying, see the world from upside-down, as well as a kid's game while they chant a nonsense rhyme ...

Un petit cochon pendu au plafond.
Tirez-lui la queue, il pondra des oeufs.
Tirez-lui plus fort, il pondra de l'or.
L'or ou l'argent, qu'aimes-tu le mieux ?
L'argent
Va-t-en dedans !
L'or
Va-t-en dehors !

Don't ask me why.

Back to the hanging from the cables, as you pull yourself across, the 'cochon pendu' takes some guts - you have to deberately let go, and hang, suspended by your safety harness only, before swinging back up again and continuing the traverse..
