leedsunited, No between 3, it was just over £200 each extra for direct flights, we weighed it up and decided we would save the £600. As it turned out as I just described we were very lucky with very smooth connections and great timings. Now had it gone as pear shaped as our friends' United connections then I would have been cursing.

Exactly, £100 each can add up for a family.
Though to be fair, delays could just be luck. I wouldn't chose to fly through Canada to get to the US. But sometimes, it just work out when all the ducks lined up. And the saving justify it even if it doesn't work out perfectly.

US immigration clearance in Denver last week was the easiest I have experienced. The BA direct service is a pleasure from arrival at T5 onwards, although it is good to have options.
We had dinner at Le Petit Paris in Breck on the fouth day. That was the first meal in the US I would rate higher than BAs in flight service!

I think the problem with US immigration tends to be on indirect flights through big, busy US hubs where there can be hideously long queues causing missed connections. I think if you have to do an indirect flight then you improve this situation by completing the US pre-clearance immigration at a Canadian hub (or also at Dublin when flying Aer Lingus I read recently too).

sarah, I'll be flying through Toronto (again) but back in to the US in July, is it an option to complete US pre-clearance or does it essential? Want to make sure I do it if it's an option.
BA Club World flights from London City to JFK allow you to clear US customs in Shannon and arrive as a domestic traveller

Alans deep bath, pretty sure it's essential, AFAIUI the Canadian hub is seen as your 'point of entry' to the US. Toronto was really easy for us the other week, just breezed through the whole shebang and got settled into the Molson Pub for an hour or so

I was looking at going from manchester to denver via chicago, but the prices have gone up by70quid per person in the last couple of weeks 
I've since had a look at flying from dublin and thats about 160 quid pp cheaper, but with only a 90 minute stopover at chicago, do you knowledgeable people think thats long enough?

TangoFiver, a 90 min stopover in Chicago would be fine if you had done the US pre clearance immigration in Dublin and so would arrive in the US as a 'domestic' traveller. If not and you have to clear US immigration in Chicago then it's anybody's guess, in theory 90mins should be enough but in practice the immigration queues at such hubs can often be very lengthy.

Think we paid £575 each. This was air Canada, LHR to Denver via Toronto, booked through Dial A Flight.

Yeah Dial A Flight are giving an online quote of £637 from Manchester.
It's cheaper to go from Heathrow but we'd have to pay for transport down there and possibly a night at a hotel, which would eat up the saving

TangoFiver, always clear your browser cache between searches and run anti mallware too . . . it helps stop that problem of the flight prices holding at or above your first search.
