Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@telford_mike, which of the ski schools would you recommend for a 3 year old please? I guess the Swiss school would be more convenient location-wise although he'd love the train ride up to Kleine Scheidegg Smile

@jonm, slightly difficult one for me as I must immediately declare that Mrs telford_mike works for Altitude, and would in all probability be teaching your child as she specialises in teaching youngsters (others do too) - hence I just post links to all the ski schools. But now you know Very Happy *

Swiss Ski School 'own' the infrastructure on the village nursery slope and therefore this may well be more convenient for you, particularly if you want to book childcare in the Playhouse in the afternoons.

I'm hoping that snow conditions are not a factor for your choice, but if they are then everyone will be up at Scheidegg anyway so all the schools will be equal in that respect.

@Baggiesfan, Was in Wengen last year when a mental snowstorm cancelled the Downhill. Looking at the current 5 day forecast and knowing the lengths the Swiss Army will go to make the race happen, I'd say that barring an Act of God the race will be on this year.

Just back from the pub (Rocks bar) where a sizeable number of the race officials were having a few beers, confidence is high that the race will take place. Weather forecast is good. The warm weather has gone and it looks like we'll get a good freeze the next few nights.

Fingers crossed.

Not sure if any have noticed, but Maennlichen have added a new panorama camera to the top station of the Cable car, this time looking down into the valley towards Grindlewald. At least the view isn't obscured by that wooden cow! (the original is still there, looking towards the wrong side of the Lauterbrunnen valley Toofy Grin )

...if you look carefully at the archive you can see how bad the queue is at the Maennlichen Chairlift Shocked

@sherlockis, good spot! Hadn’t noticed that one.

Looking good for the race, training went ahead today and there’s another training run tomorrow. The hospitality tents at Wengernalp still need work, but I reckon they’ll get there.

Yes the race was good, I watched it live on the German Eurosport Satellite channel (as it's free Toofy Grin ).

I gather Swiss International Airlines and the Swiss Air Force "Patrouille Suisse" display team put on their usual excellent formation flying show before the Wengen Downhill Race this morning: https://www.facebook.com/flyswiss.ch/videos/1866186400338711/

The World Snow Festival is on this week in Grindelwald https://www.worldsnowfestival.com/
Sculptures are being constructed in the village - by the SportsZentrum, and up on the Maennlichen.
You can check out the progress by zooming in on the new Maennlichen cam. https://panocam.skiline.cc/maennlichen2?cu=en-GB
The sculptures are up on the hill behind the Maennlichen chairlift. Started out as mounds of snow this morning and looking a bit more angular now

Weird weather. +1C at midnight and raining. Still windy. Forecast is snow tomorrow but unless the wind dies down a bit it won’t help much. The infrastructure for the race is gradually being removed so we’ll be back to normal soon with a bit of luck.

Closed here - howling gale and snow. A couple of low level lifts are open over at Mürren but nothing here or at Grindelwald. Mind you, it should be good when it eventually reopens, but for now there's more stormy weather coming tomorrow.

@telford_mike, nice Smile

Could I pick your brains about places to eat? It'll be my wife's birthday whilst we're there in Feb - any recommendations for a nice restaurant for a birthday dinner?

(It's a few years since I visited last and I can't remember where we went!)

@jonm, I'm sure telford _mike will give you his recommendations, here's a few of mine:

In the main street the Bernerhof Restaurant is good for Swiss specialties like Fondues (both cheese and meat varieties), Raclette etc. They also do Feuerstein/Pierrade (aka Hot Rocks in English) where you cook the sliced up meat (beef, chicken) yourself on a flat hot stone at your table. It's served with chips and dipping sauces. (Incidentally the secret to preventing the meat sticking to the hot stone is to sprinkle a bit of salt on it before putting the meat on. Madeye-Smiley )

If you go from the station down the road that goes past the Co-Op and underneath the railway line after a couple of hundred yards you'll reach the Bären which is well known for its food.

If you carry on a bit further down that road you'll reach the Hotel Alpenrose. It's restaurant is very good and I think they are open to non-residents (but you'd have to check). Usually they have a special buffet dinner on Thursday with a musician, but obviously the chances are that won't be the actual birthday date.

@jonm, Depends on budget of course, but here goes - these are the ones I have actually eaten at recently - there are others of course.

Schönegg - probably the top restaurant in town, with prices to match. Beautiful dining room for a special occasion.

Caprice - similar to the Schönegg, lovely surroundings and reassuringly expensive.

Silberhorn Stübe - much less expensive than the 2 above, and not quite the same ambiance, but still good food and service.

Sina's - Italian restaurant doing everything from pizzas to fillet steaks. Usually busy (occasionally chaotic), deservedly popular.

Golden India - fancy a curry? Lovely little place serving great food from an open kitchen a few feet away from your table.

Tripadvisor will give you more info. Worth booking during Feb, and there's always Santos kebab house if you can't decide Very Happy

Weather update. It stopped snowing at about 10pm. Temp in the village -3C, rising slowly. Tons of new snow. More precipitation forecast for tomorrow, but the most significant part of the local forecast is:

“In den Bergen stürmischer bis orkanartiger Wind aus Sektor West”

Which roughly translates to “In the mountains storm to hurricane force winds from the west.”

Looks like another day doing jobs around the house tomorrow. That'll be 3 consecutive days lost to the weather Sad We are going to have some seriously pissed-off guests if the forecast is accurate, but again, when it clears things should be marvellous.

Very little open again today - nothing at Männlichen and just one lift (Arven) at Scheidegg, but it was so windy up there I doubt there were many takers. Bumps drag was open as well as Innerwengen chair, so it was possible to do a circuit from Wengernalp down to Mary's at Innerwengen then chairlift up to Allmend and back up to Wengernalp by train.

Whereas adults have the sense to stay indoors or go shopping, ski school still need to keep the kids amused somehow. Big parallel slalom competition on the village nursery slope this afternoon.

It snowed until lunchtime, now gloomy and +3C.

Heading down to pick up my 173 all mountain skis to use instead of my 201 SGs for the Inferno. Snowing outside.

Actually, not as much snow pack in Mürren as I expected, at least lower down. But good cover partout.

Fairly filthy morning, glad I wasn’t racing.

Much better day today. Snowing this morning, pistes fine down to Grund at 990 metres, if a little sticky low down. Temps dropped this evening.

SRF Meteo tweeted this this evening:

So it looks like the region will be avalanche city for a couple of days, followed by some wonderful conditions.

Currently -2C in the village & snowing.
