Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Just considering a deal to stay in lauterbrunnen in march the two of are confident strong skiers 20 years plus though not experts. A little put off by the ski club review saying a lack of advanced terrain. What are the views of those that have skiied the area for a long time and obviously keep going back

The skiing here is very underrated, lots of variation and really good off piste opportunities when the conditions are right .If you only want to ski black slopes then maybe not for you.
Jungfrau region has wonderful long runs with lots of variation with some of the greatest views anywhere

@dan100, from Lauterbrunnen you can access Murren as well as Wengen/Kleine Scheidegg/Lauberhorn. There is plenty of expert terrain and off-piste in Murren to keep you happy for 2-3 days, and if you know where to look Wengen is also great with plenty of cruising and some decent off-piste potential for the other 2-3 days. Ski-club say Wengen is somewhat lacking in advanced terrain, which is generally true for the pistes but it's hardly a beginner's resort either. If you get a good deal I would go, no question. If you're lucky and conditions allow you can head up via Murren and do the Inferno run from the top of Schilthorn to Lauterbrunnen. That's 2970m-800m and about 15km skiing with some good challenges. If you don't enjoy that, then fair enough, there's always Chamonix next time.

A word of caution though. Much like many resorts, the chances of good snow below 1200m in mid-late March are not guaranteed so you will need to ski higher up. Murren is usually fine. Wengen last Easter (beginning April) was skiing well down to the village but slushy in the afternoon. Lauterbrunnen was green.

Hi, heading down to Wengen this weekend and had a couple of questions (had three but the one on the variety of skiing has been answered above so thank you!) Firstly, given Lauterbrunnen's altitude I hadn't been thinking about winter tires - is it normally OK? We have snow chains in case - and I see that although there's snow forecast higher up, the temp on Saturday is above zero lower down. Secondly, any top tips on cheap(er) eats on and off the mountain!? Thanks. Ed

Hi @edpyke, driven many times and not needed winter tires as they always keep the road clear (also keep the chains in th car). I would also pre-book the Lauterbrunnen car park in advance.

There was plenty of people going off piste just next to the Eiger Nordwand chair last week.

British and French are on half-term, so it's busy. As most visitors are families the bars are quieter in the evening than they have been lately. Skiing is pretty epic. We've had fresh snow every day since the weekend.

To get away from the crowds, get up early and enjoy Mannlichen for an hour or so, then ski down to Grund and back up to Scheidegg on the train. Avoid the Lauberhorn, but enjoy skiing on the other side of the tracks e.g. Fallboden. Runs back to Wengen only busy 3.30 - 4pm so circuits of Wengernalp / Bumps / Innerwengen / Allmend are great in the afternoon.

Heading to Wengen next month. Best exchange rate the OH has found so far is 1.39chf to the pound with no commission. We also have a card that charges nothing to use abroad, so asking any regulars what the exchange rate is like from an atm in the village. Thanks in advance.

The exchange rate depends on your bank - some banks charge more commission or other fees than others. Most base their exchange on the daily interbank rate, (found here www.xe.com/currency/chf-swiss-franc ) and add a loading % or fee on top. Interbank rate today is about 1.42.
Check out the list of banks here - lists Debit & Credit cards. http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/overseas-card-charges
I have always used my Nationwide FlexPlus account - zero charges for ATM withdrawals - and got pretty close to the XE.com rate on the day. Of course rates can go up and down on a daily basis, so if you know that the rate is about to plummet - you wouldn't be going skiing you'd be a Money Trader in the City!
Lots of ATM's in the village, I find that the PostFinance one by the post office gives you a range of notes, I have been to some (in Interlaken?) that gave me 3x100CHF notes!. Luckily the swiss don't seem phased by a "£70" note to pay for a coffee!

@sherlockis, thanks. We have a similar zero-atm-charge card from the Halifax.

The weather goes very mild at the weekend +10c at the peak then drops back to the norm on Tuesday with snow on Monday.. Big question is will the temps drop in time to produce snow and not rain !!

If it does rain it shouldn't be really heavy and will leave plenty of show, currently looks like a bit of rain saturday night (but may fall as sleet or snow) and very light rain monday night and tuesday morning, but the weather forecast seems to vary from hour to hour.

You are always best to wait until the winter season ends and then ask the question when they re-open. When you receive the quoted price,go back and ask for the 'best offer price' before you state you will email the other hotels Wink

More weird weather today - just like April. Spring agenda - up early, ski until lunchtime, beer at home on the balcony in the afternoon. +14C in the village at lunchtime. Wixi was absolutely epic at about 11.30. Looks like rain or snow tomorrow, then colder with snow on Thursday. All sorts of rumours going round about a big snowfall at the weekend, but it's really much too early to say.
