An apparently simple question, and I assumed the efficient German piste maps would make this clear but they don't.
How do you get from the St Anton part to the Lech part? If you're staying in St Anton will you ever, practically, get over to Lech/Zug?
And how snow-sureish is this for New Year? (Yes, yes, I know there are no guarantees but quite a lot of it seems quite low. Is that why there are some remarkably cheap deals about?)
Thanks.

By bus or off-piste (guide obligatory/necessary).
Snow should be fine at New Year, I certainly hope so as I am also there

There isn't any official piste between the two resorts. They share the same lift pass but that's about it. You have to take a bus.
You can ski over from the top of the Valuga to Zürs, but it's only doable with a guide and is quite seriously off piste. Not crazy difficult, but they won't let you up the last section of the lift without a guide.
St.Anton is the most 'snow shure' place in Austria. If there's no snow there then there's no snow. Period!

The buses go every 10-15minutes from Alpe Rauz and take 8-12 minutes to Zuers and Lech respectively. It's dead easy! Buses can get quite busy at certain parts of the day and you want to be leaving Lech/Zug around 3ish to make sure you get back in time to ski back over to where you started (especially if you're by Nasserein and can't be bothered to bus again or walk).
Edit: Fixed mistake!

Haven't been for a while, but there used to be big scrums for the buses from Rauz at peak periods. The post buses from town might cost a bit more but they are more convenient and less crowded. Can't remember how long they take around 30 minutes I wold guess.

James the Last, What Timmah said.....oh but if you're bussing it all the way from St Anton, it's a little over 20 mins and you get the bus for the top of the town, near the Rendl lift and near the Huber Boutique....it's dead easy to find.
When are you going?

Some pretty good deals about.

I'd also suggest getting the PostBus over the free bus at the end of the day, saves having to join the scrum not just getting on the bus in Zuers but the T-bar at Valfagher, it's about 3.60 single or 5.20 return I think. I've mostly been going in the opposite direction (Lech to St Anton for the day), and found it much easier to get on the bus at the Postamt (right by the Oberlech lift) in Lech over any of the other stops en route to Rauz.
Oh and Timmaah's made a typo/mistake, it's Zuers you go through en route to Lech, if you end up on the bus to Zug from Lech you'll find yourself heading in the wrong direction, and the only lift there takes you up towards the Kriegerhorn, from which the only place to ski back to is Lech/Oberlech...

No scrums at all for the free buses last Christmas. Apart from the cost, the free bus is a more efficient route with less skiing time wasted.

Depending on numbers, a taxi can be a good option. Takes around 25 mins and will cost around €45 from memory but will take 6/7 of you. We often ski to Alpe Rauz and get a bus or taxi from them on way to Lech. On way back we have usually skied Lech first then to Zurs and get taxi or bus back. Never really a problem to be honest although can get busy 3 o'clock ish.

James the Last, another vote for the 6€ postbus to avoid the crowds on the free bus. You must make the trip from one to t'other as both areas are brilliant
The whole area has one of the very best snow records in the alps, but with the wigglies now flat-lining into early Dec a NY booking is something of a gamble

Well there is sitting on two lifts and sometimes a queue for them and then unless you are going off piste a single red run which together probably eat about forty plus minutes and then if the scrums are bad potentially a serious wait for a free bus.

James the Last, The others are spot on about the Postbus.....the terminus is the same place I was telling you.
We've been going for the past the few years, and for the past two trips we've stayed in the Hotel Rundeck with Klaus & Manuela....it's fantastic.
There's 21 Paddies hitting there for 10 days (arrive 9th of Feb) if you're interested.....it's the best.

Wasn't there a time you could ski from St Anton to Lech and Zurs, and back? I seem to remember you could, but going back 20 or 30 years - certainly it looked like a hike and a challenging off-piste run to do it now.

nicoatridge, you can only ski over by doing the off piste routes off the Valluga II lift. You need to have a guide with you to go on this lift.

You can get to Valluga Nord, and thence the ski to Zurs, by boot-packing up from the top station from Valluga I. It is however quite a steep climb and can be sketchy.

kat.ryb,
Enviromentalists. They are huge in Austria. There is a ban on new lifts taking new routes. Only upgrades or replacements. Only new lifts can be built
If plans were submitted before the ban (some years ago now).
Luckily A new 2 stage Gondola will be built from Alpe Rauz to Zurs
via Trittkopf (replace cable xar). When it wil happen is all up in the air.

Take the pay bus and stay around for a few beers and (not so cheap) pizza in Lech. You can get the 6pm or 7pm bus back to St Anton (cash machine near the bus station in Lech so you can top your wallet back up . ).

People might like to know that this is now going to change. They are building a lift to connecting the two resorts and apparently making the Alberg ski area a massive interconnected place. On the St Anton side of the mountain the station will be located at Stuben then going to Zurs.
They also state that it will be open in time for this coming winter season 16/17

Is it possible to ski from lech to zurs and vice versa ? On the piste map there is no obvious link. What am I missing ?

You know it makes sense.

From Lech to Zurs you get a cable car out of Lech and it takes two more lifts to get to Zurs after that. You can only ski to Lech from Zurs on itinerary runs, I've done one which has both times been like a piste, not sure about the one that goes directly back into Lech though.

Seems odd that they are investing in a new cable car to link st anton to zurs yet there is a fundamental hole in the links than go from lech to zurs !

zurs to lech only on itineries...if you look at the piste map its not very well linked an looks like the itineriy ends in the middle of the town not near a lift. i could be wrong but just going off what I can see

You go Zuers to Lech via Zug - the punter circuit essentially goes clockwise. What you seem to be suggesting is a lift from Zuers to Rufikopf.
Not the best investment IMV unless they want to market a reverse white ring.

@backhojo,
You go from Zurs to Lech on an itinerary as others have said. It has some signs on it but nothing like regular piste markers. From the top of the Madloch chair, take the itinerary towards Lech and Zug. It will probably resemble a lumpy piste. Halfway down it you have a choice: turn left at the sign for Zug and you will have a couple of steeper and probably icy pitches. Then you get the small chair from Zug and ski a few easy blues into the centre of Lech arriving almost opposite the Rupfikopf cable cars.
Alternatively, and slightly easier skiing, is go straight on to Lech, where the snow will probably run out as you get to the hotels on the outskirts. Walk straight on for about 5-10 minutes to get to the cable car as before, for the return to Zurs. Both are nice runs if you are a competent skier.

The "itinerary" routes from top of Madlochjoch Nos 33 and 56 are well skied/packed, mainly north facing, and apart from the last section of route 56 (which tends to slush-up/mud-up earlier in the latter part of the season than 33) both routes are lovely to ski.

the link is a great in-season interactive piste map that gives live piste/lift operations.
http://www.lechzuers.com/skiing is also a very informative website for Lech/Zurs.
