Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Twisted Knee Yesterday

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Gutted,

Yesterday was a practice at the chill factore for the world record of longest ski chain. Which invloved everyone holding hands and snow ploughing from top to bottom. Heres come the injury. The guy to my right wasnt the best and in one attempt stood on the back of my ski. As he broke off, he still had his foot on my ski and took the back round which twisted my right foot inwards. I can't remember how far but my bindings didnt come off as we were going so slowly.

Anywho, i get helped off the slope in a bit of pain, go to the hospital, wait 2 hours and then get checked out. Which by that time, no matter what the doc did, i felt no pain. Only a little if i twisted my ankle left or right. So I'm sent on my way.

Traveling home to blackpool which took 4 hours due to 2 motorways being closed about 2 hours into the journey i am in agony with it. Eventually I get home and my knee is swollen above and on the inside quite a lot (almost blends the knee cap in) after keeping it still with an ice pack the pain lessens. But now I can keep it straight with no pain, but cannot bend it at all without it being very painfull. I also can't put any weight on it. Im worried this is going to affect muy future skiing so I want to make sure I get it sorted properly asap. Does anyone have a clue whats I've torn, what to do etc?

Many Thanks

sellerselectrical, get to the hospital and to a knee specialist. I lost all my ligaments and tendons in the knee in a similar slow trapping of my ski by someone. I also did not feel any pain as apparently the pain centre shuts down when there is massive damage. so the fact you have pain is actually a good sign.

My foot ended up pointing 180° in the wrong direction which is a wee bit more excessive than yours most probably. As soon as someone manually released my binding the whole lower leg returned to the normal direction. I was operated on the next day but it was the end of my ski season, that's for sure.

You may have only sprained something but good treatment early on is the key. If you have private insurance, try and get an MRI scan done ASAP. If you go via your GP they can refer you directly to a specialist as well as order the MRI if they feel it will be useful.

good luck i hope oyu have not done anything too disastrous! Sad

Thanks for your advice. I went back to the doctors yesterday to explain about the changes, after a bit of proding and twisting he said I have just over stretched the ligaments. With rest, ice 15mins every 4 hours, cushion under the knee and ibuprofen, he said it should be back to normal within a week.

I bloody hope so. So far it only sounds minor, I hope it is. The inflamation has halved since tuesday and the pain has halved too. Its just a bit stiff at the moment.

cushion under the knee

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES SUPPORT AN INJURED KNEE JUST UNDER THE KNEE This is the worst thing you can do as it can cause all sorts of problems at a later date due to contraction of the hamstring and collateral ligaments.

Support the whole length of your leg or just support under the ankle/heel and try to maintain full extension. If you only support under the knee, you lose a lot of your natural extension and then are forced to limp. This sets up a vicious circle and your whole lower body bio-mechanical system can be put under an undue and unnecessary strain.

If you have been putting the cushions only under your knee, that's why it is "a bit stiff"! Believe me I know the agony of trying to regain lost extension when I was injured, because some helpful well-meaning but basically ignorant district nurse said it was OK to support my injured knee in this comfortable way.

Good luck, and to be honest I would still insist on an MRI scan at least. It might even pay for you to have one done privately just to make sure there is no internal damage to the cruiciate ligaments or the meniscus.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

sellerselectrical,

From personal experience she's absolutely right about the knee support thing.
if you support your knee in a slightly bent position it takes an age to get it right.

cheers Geoff
