Sarah Burke, 4 times X Games Superpipe champion, is in a coma in hospital today after an accident during training in Park City. It appears she landed a trick in the base of the pipe and 'bounced' onto her head...
The Park City Superpipe is 22ft (6.7m) high and athletes can clear the lip of it by, on occasion, as much again, putting them over 40ft (13m) above the base of the pipe. Normally tricks are landed on the curved section of the pipe, converting downward speed into forward speed, fuelling the next trick. A small error in vertical position can put the skier above the lip or out over the flat base area.
This was the same halfpipe where snowboarder Kevin Pearce was critically injured during training in 2009. Pearce suffered traumatic brain injuries but has since recovered and returned to riding on snow last month
Sarah was airlifted to hospital in Park City. She appears stable but in a coma.
Just wanting to wish her our best and to her family, lets pray she recovers soon.

Poor woman. Nobody can compete at that level without taking big risks of a split second bit of bad timing, can they? Very nasty indeed.

Not pleasant but safest thing for Sarah until signs of recovery (My daughter had 10 days in ICU last year!), heart goes out to Sarah and her family sure she will be receiving the best of care.

My lad has just texted me with tears in his eyes and says tomorrow its the biggest run he can find just for Sarah, I hope all Snowheads will do the same thing, when they can, Sarah is probably one the most inspiration skiers we have had over the last few years.

livetoski, I just posted on the other thread. When I started skiing I was given a copy of the promotional Helly Hansen DVD Happy Happy, great tunes and all mountain action, she was doing some fantastic stunts on it, one of the skiers who inspired me and showed what was possible. Always seemed to be grinning and enjoying it all. The world seems a duller place without people like her in it.

Incredible support is being shown in donations to cover the Sarah's outstanding medical expenses (which were not covered by insurance issues). As of Saturday morning over $240,000 has been raised! Amazing.

Just found out after been away to La Plagne - this lady was in my opinion the best and so versatile - what a tragic waste. She was amazing and an inspiration to many. Rest in peace Sarah.
